Title Synopsis
adele #1: the last year First appearance of Adele and Tabitha. Adele philosophizes on how she feels about getting her new black robe--a symbol of accomplishment in her prophecy studies--and has a flashback about idolizing her teacher, Tabitha. She mourns the fact that she now has a year left to live in her home dimension.
adele #2: you don't remember what you lost Adele sulkily argues with her teacher about what she faces in the next world, and tries to seek comfort over the disturbing realization that she is going to lose her memories when she travels to the human world in a year's time. But Tabitha convinces Adele that moving forward is important.
adele #3: mapping the universe Tabitha teaches Adele about "the flash," a phenomenon where interdimensional water pools open to different dimensions. They talk about how the "distance" of each dimension determines how much memory a person retains when traveling there.
adele #4: mythology Tabitha and Adele continue to talk about the dimensions, and Adele asks some questions about dimension Fae, a world very close to dimension Thee-ileo, the human world. Tabitha tells Adele about how Faeries like to come to Thee-ileo and mess around, which Adele thinks is weird. More information about the dimensions is scattered around here.
adele #5: the only way Adele learns more about the creatures of other dimensions through a meditation exercise. Prophecy techniques are discussed.
adele #6: sent home First appearance of Aleef. Tabitha unexpectedly sends Adele home instead of inviting her to stay over for dreaming exercises. Adele's feelings of awkwardness about her family are made clear, and on her way home she encounters her old friend Aleef, who asks for help with a prediction. Adele is pleased that she can stall a little before going home and hopes to miss dinner.
adele #7: on destiny Adele predicts bad news for her friend Aleef--the boy she likes doesn't like her--and they talk about the pros and cons of knowing the future.
adele #8: at home, but not First appearance of Adele's family. Adele thinks about her responsibilities as a prophet in relation to having told her friend to go after a different boy. She arrives home and encounters her little sister, who announces to the family that she is home (so she can't just pretend not to be there). She is forced by circumstance to join the family dinner, where her family members act as though they are glad she is there.
adele #9: manners and morals Eating customs in dimension Ailashuo are revealed, including a flashback in which Adele broke them and angered her mother. In her thoughts, Adele acknowledges that she may not have to live by these rules in the future, but that she should do so now because she is still part of this family.
adele #10: a little memento of me First appearance of Shelshay. Another flashback shows that Adele has been stuck with her family for the last three days, during which she decided to create some mementos for her family to give to them when she leaves the dimension forever. Finally she goes back to Tabitha's, and ends up seeing a couple of unfamiliar Shioan people waiting at the pool. One of them is a prophet girl.
adele #11: a multi-dimensional proposal Adele has her first conversation with a Shioan prophet, and Shelshay is very enthusiastic and likeable. This girl is very inspired by the study of the dimensions, and is surprised that Adele has never been anywhere but Ailashuo. Shelshay convinces Adele that the two of them should ask her teacher for permission to go to Chiplance, a nearby dimension, as an educational field trip.
adele #12: lost in translation Adele brings Shelshay to Tabitha's teaching room, where the three discuss whether Adele can go to Chiplance. Tabitha only speaks English and Shelshay speaks only Shioan, so Adele is forced to translate what quickly becomes a passionate argument. But when Tabitha ends it by committing a supposedly unpardonable cultural sin and Shelshay responds by not getting angry but THANKING the teacher and leaving, Adele is the one who doesn't understand what was said. . . .
adele #13: bringing a shadow to light Adele demands answers about the intentional insult that Tabitha delivered to Shelshay, and Tabitha demands that Adele figure it out herself through a prophecy exercise. Adele feels like she's being bossed around and Tabitha feels like she's being sassed, but the two calm down and uncover the secret, and finally Adele understands the meaning of Tabitha's supposed insult. Tabitha tells Adele she needs to start finding her own answers, and drops a bomb: Adele just might be the best prophet the world has ever seen. Huh?
adele #14: a sobering thought Tabitha and Adele discuss Adele's potential and talent. Poor Adele is a bit bowled over by the idea that so much rides on her, but she is willing to start accepting her responsibilities. She asks for permission to go say a few words to Shelshay, and Tabitha lets her go.
adele #15: trust yourself more Adele talks to Shelshay about what just happened with her teacher, and Shelshay admits that usually she's not taken very seriously. But she has some sage advice for Adele: That she should trust herself more than she trusts her teacher. Shelshay hints that Adele should investigate why Tabitha doesn't speak Shioan after living in the world for decades.
adele #16: no one to talk to Adele talks to Tabitha about why she never learned Shioan. A discussion of the importance of being able to communicate ensues. Adele wants to know what she can expect to remember once she crosses over.
adele #17: stale memories The two prophets discuss the importance of memory, and how bringing a memento doesn't help to reclaim lost memories once they're erased the way dimensional travel erases them.
adele #18: more than the mind can handle Tabitha and Adele lay down a curriculum for Adele's prophecy works. They decide to focus on pebble divinations since they are very difficult but very useful for someone of Adele's caliber. They choose to do some exercises regarding the upcoming flash.
adele #19: talent vs. wisdom Some realizations Adele has about the flash during practice really impress Tabitha, but she also has some advice and urges her student not to fall victim to biased prophecy.
adele #20: open doors Adele's training goes on, and she improves by leaps and bounds, feeling more awake than ever before. At home, life is the same, and her family doesn't seem to realize something huge is approaching. Adele has a tender moment with her little sister, and wishes she would retain the ability to miss her once she's gone.
adele #21: in a flash The flash arrives, and Adele and her teacher follow its movement as it connects to different dimensions. But when it slips into Thee-ileo, the human dimension that Tabitha has not been to in decades, her teacher has an emotional reaction and Adele does not know how to comfort her.
adele #22: glimmers of the future Adele and Tabitha bond over talk about living in a dimension other than their birth home, and they talk a little about Thee-ileo and its technology.
adele #23: a bad feeling The flash continues, and drastic changes occur in the pool's landscape. Adele follows its path to an unknown dimension and writes information about it into her journal. Then she gets a bad feeling that someone is going to go through the open pool from that distant dimension, which would result in profound memory loss. She mourns for whoever or whatever is going to go through this.
adele #24: one more honor Adele is back after having attended a prophet convention where she presented her findings on the new dimension. She has been given an award and also asked to name her find, and Tabitha refuses to let her name the dimension after her--she'd rather Adele use her name for a child. Tabitha suggests Adele ask Shelshay for help naming the dimension since the Shioan prophet has such an interest in such things.
adele #25: judgment call Adele visits a jealous and excited Shelshay, who gives her the inspiration she needs to come up with a name for the new dimension. She names it Leisheilo, Shioan for "place of cooperation," because of its two native species.
adele #26: "forever" sounds so final Adele brings Tabitha up to speed on the dimension's new name and starts talking about wanting to have lunch with Shelshay, but Tabitha slaps her with a reality check and says she has no more time for lunch dates. Her departure time is coming up fast. Adele can't imagine being okay with the fact that she is going to lose Tabitha.
adele #27: feeling beautiful Tabitha ends one of Adele's daily lessons by encouraging her to figure out what traditional gifts she's going to give her future students. She shows a flashback of her own gifts--human clothing Tabitha gave her--and decides to make special bracelets for her own mentees.
adele #28: excuses for togetherness Adele's mother asks Adele to be present for a family portrait, which Adele realizes is probably the last time they'll all be together.
adele #29: my first student Adele and Tabitha discuss Adele's future as a prophecy teacher, and how she'll know she's ready to teach.
adele #30: one of several goodbyes Adele's last night at home involves giving out her mementos, talking to her parents and siblings, and having a few confusing and sad moments with her baby sister, who can't sleep because Adele is leaving.
adele #31: the right to remember A note from her friend Aleef makes Adele long to take her memories of her home world with her. Against Tabitha's advice, Adele decides to squirrel away a few mementos and begins writing a letter to herself in a secret journal so that she will have some link to her past once she crosses over. 0084 adele #32: last lesson Adele reflects on her departure ceremony, then is informed by Tabitha that she's not yet ready to depart. Tabitha has discovered her secret journal and is not happy that she tried to take it with her. 0088 adele #33: transform Tabitha gives Adele some perspective on why taking her journal with her to the new world is not allowed, and leaves her to meditate, assigned to figure out how to take the most important things with her despite having to leave the book. Adele comes to some interesting conclusions on how to get her memories to be transformed instead of preserved. 0092 adele #34: a different embrace Adele gears up to leave her home world, has a last few emotional exchanges with Tabitha, discusses the role of emotion in prophecy, and . . . goes through the pool to arrive in the human world. 0096 adele #35: all that i have After arriving in the human world Adele attempts to figure out her situation. She is confused as to why there is no one to help her, but when she thinks about seeking assistance, she gleans that she is now an alien in a hostile world, and quickly realizes she has nothing and no one to help her but her own intuition. 0100 adele #36: ready or not Adele begins to draft a plan to get herself a place to sort through her options. She decides she'll need to acquire some money to rent a hotel room, and sets her destination at the nearest town. 0104 adele #37: "volunteer" Adele makes her way into an inhabited area for the first time, encounters snack machines, and convinces a specially picked open-minded human to purchase a lottery ticket. 0108 adele #38: anything can happen Adele and her lottery partner have a conversation about culture, and Adele makes some realizations about how to present herself and explores a few new unfamiliar human artifacts. The issue ends with the actual announcement of their lottery numbers and details both people's reaction. 0112 adele #39: sorting through After claiming her money, Adele gets a hotel room and sorts through her only belongings, which leads to some interesting memories as well as some startling conclusions. 0116 adele #40: a clean perspective Adele contemplates being the only person from her dimension in the world, and she takes her first human-world shower while reflecting on whether she'll be able to reveal herself to any humans in the future. 0120 adele #41: entertainment purposes only Adele learns, through television, that humans do have a system in place to read the future, and it is called the Tarot. But upon further investigation, she finds that Tarot is more a game "for entertainment" than a trusted truth-searching method for talented individuals. Nevertheless, she vows to learn it so she might communicate with this dimension's wannabe oracles. 0124 adele #42: girl stuff Adele decides to go to the store for some supplies and then to a New Age store to learn about Tarot cards. In both places she ponders the nature of female people and their tendency to have certain things in common regardless of their origin. 0128 adele #43: misconception Adele has an appointment with a Tarot reader, only to be disappointed to find that this supposed psychic is little more than a counselor with no special powers. Adele gives the fortune-teller a rather uncharacteristic tongue-lashing, but leaves feeling ashamed and doubtful. 0132 adele #44: on my level In the continuing search for a prophet on her level, Adele encounters an older man who suggests that she won't find them through mainstream channels. Adele becomes frustrated with the idea that even open-minded humans seem to think what she's looking for doesn't exist . . . and thinking about it leads Adele to remember that her own teacher came from this world, and therefore human prophets do exist. 0136 adele #45: full of knowledge Adele decides to leave her hotel and ends up happily gathering knowledge about the human world in a library. 0140 adele #46: past, present and future Adele gets comfortable with her surroundings (and the library patrons get more comfortable with her) as she studies human history. However, when she decides to start studying the present, she realizes that knowing the fates of others may mean she has a responsibility to help them, and she wonders what her purpose is. 0144 adele #47: from above Adele decides to meditate on the large problem of how to involve herself in helping others whose predicaments are revealed to her through the newspapers. She discusses the role of meditation--superconscious--and sleep--subconscious--in determining the correct course of action. 0148 adele #48: shatter effect After awakening, Adele searches for guidance in the remnants of her dreams and discovers she remembers a bit about how to use her stones for divination. But when she attempts to use them to divine a course of action on helping solve a crime, she is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information. 0152 adele #49: someone like me After Adele moves to a different library and reads more fairy tales and mythology, she ponders how strange it is that humans have so many stories that involve prophecy. Obviously they wish to grasp the future, so why is it that if she were to reveal her abilities, she'd still get no acceptance? 0156 adele #50: my own terms Adele ponders how she's getting sick of having to skulk around to take care of her personal needs, noting that she's losing weight because it's easier not to eat than to interact with humans as often. After listening to some classical music at night in the library, she heartily wishes she were in a position to establish herself and give what she has to offer instead of just sampling what the human world has to offer while in hiding. 0160 adele #51: human contact Adele is skimming the crime section of the newspaper in a caf when a young man seeking human contact drops in on her for a conversation. Adele thinks about how she should relate to human society despite being outside of it. 0166 adele #52: a step backwards After leaving the coffeehouse where she had "human contact," Adele tries to read the paper and solve mysteries, but she's too distracted by her own thoughts. She ponders the past and tries to dig up its relics, and philosophizes about the effects of her past on her present. 0181 adele #53: diving After being inspired by a fairy tale book, Adele tries a mirror, then water, as a divination tool. She compares and contrasts what different types of divination are for, and then uses the water to gaze at her purpose. 0194 adele #54: playing god In hopes of learning to use her clairvoyant abilities in realistic contexts, Adele makes a bold move and sends four letters that change the fates of the people involved in four unrelated crimes. She explores the ramifications of each and wonders at the end whether she is cut out for something so emotionally scarring as playing God with people's lives. 0203 adele #55: one of them Still trying to find her feet after her strangely traumatic experience helping others with her predictions, Adele decides to let her brain take a day off. She goes shopping at the mall and ponders how much she's actually "one of them"--she wants to remind herself that she's not a god, but she knows she's also indisputably an outsider. She wonders again where she really belongs. 0214 adele #56: my current self Adele sees part of a teen movie while at the mall and wonders whether she ever had a "stupid teenage girl phase." She buys makeup and hair clips at the mall, tries them on in the privacy of the library after hours, and mimics the teen girls' behavior, only to find that as she suspected it's not something she finds comfortable. She also tries behaving like a young child, but decides she's more interested in pursuing the path for her current self rather than trying to relive what could have been her past. 0226 adele #57: a step Adele decides she's tired of being alone in a crowded area and decides to be alone out in nature. She goes off on her own and makes it out of the city. 0234 adele #58: trusting my feet Adele sits by a lake with a feeling that she once did this with her teacher, and determines that she needs to go toward the next step in her journey. Unfortunately, she knows which way to walk but doesn't know what she'll find at the end of the path. She ruminates on the frustration inherent in knowing the direction without knowing the destination. 0246 adele #59: supposed to Adele reaches her destination--a primitive shelter for backpackers--and ruminates on her purpose while reading a physics book she accidentally took from the library. Inspired by humans' ingenuity and curiosity, Adele decides that instead of waiting to "find" her purpose, she should make her own, and decides she will simply learn more about humans for the time being until she finds a way she can both help them and be comfortable. 0271 adele #60: theory and practice Adele thinks more about theoretical knowledge being ultimately useless in her situation, and determines that she will never be a good teacher of the future-seeing arts if she doesn't learn to practice her skills in context. While walking back toward the library, she has an epiphany and realizes she doesn't have to find a place in human society in order to use her skills to benefit a group; instead, she will look for a place with other folks outside society, and will bide her time until her opening comes. 0293 adele #61: may none follow After arriving back in the library and doing some research, Adele ends up having a dream that tells her sometime soon she'll be taking a train to another part of the country. To raise money for this she acquires half the winnings from a scratch-off ticket after convincing a drug-using passerby to buy it for her. Disturbed by the fact that she seems to have funded his drug-dealing aspirations by splitting the winnings, she ponders whether she would have done it if she'd known ahead of time, and hopes for the man to be influential on no one. 0305 adele #62: the foreigner i am Finally ready to move onto the next phase of her life, Adele buys a train ticket and boards the train, on her way to the East Coast to find her destiny. She knows little about it, but she knows she is off to the place where she will eventually meet and teach her student, and she anticipates meeting the other people she knows mark the place. She's also anxious, though, and wonders what it will be like to interact with other people after so long of just being a stranger in a strange land. 0313 adele #63: terrible attention Adele gets off the train with relief, tired of people staring at her in her robe. She felt very uncomfortable with their attention and doesn't know how she'll deal with meeting a human (even a friendly one) if she felt like this even when she was concealed. She makes her way out to the forest and has a dream that gives her a sign: soon she will see a strange sight in the sky, and then she will know more about where to go and when. 0329 adele #64: what's coming With her "strange sight in the sky" behind her--the incident in which she briefly met Weaver in the forest--Adele continues to make her way in the forest, using her dreams as tools to decide what to do next. She realizes a good plan is to seek out the non-human creatures who live on the beach, and after she takes a bath and philosophizes about her purpose, she heads in their direction, knowing she'll need to find shelter before the coming rain hits. 0333 adele #65: seeing me Adele encounters and introduces herself to Dax, Weaver, and Alix. She is deliberately confrontational because she perceives that they might otherwise expect her to take a submissive role in their company. Dax is fairly accepting, but Weaver is a little afraid of her (since she didn't tiptoe around the fact that she can know "impossible" things), and Alix's temper rises to meet Adele's attitude. By the end of their first conversation, the boys decide to have a private talk, and while Adele knows they will decide to accept her staying with them, she wonders whether she could learn a bit more tact. 0339 adele #66: superhuman Adele discusses her situation with Dax while Weaver and Alix listen in. She explains a few things about her abilities and declares that she's hoping to one day teach others like herself, at which point Dax and Alix tell her humans don't have those abilities. This surprises her, coming from people who are so improbable themselves. She knows her teacher was human, so she knows humans do sometimes have abilities of her caliber, but she must admit she doesn't know where or how she'll find them. 0345 adele #67: elemental Adele makes a case for her usefulness amongst her new companions by saying that she'll be able to share her knowledge with them and make their lives less uncertain. Furthermore, she seems them as an elemental quartet with her completing influence as the catalyst--the element of fire. She outlines how she thinks Alix is water, Weaver is air, and Dax is earth, and requests that they make their final decision regarding whether she can stay with them. 0351 adele #68: ordinary disorientation When the guys come back from their meeting and agree that she can live with them, Adele accepts and resolves to try to get along with her company. She keeps silent on her myriad suggestions for changes in their way of life, wanting to avoid being seen as barging in and mothering them. And at night, Adele goes off to deal with her disorientation by taking a little walk. She runs into Weaver, who tells her not to worry and assures her she'll adjust soon. 0355 adele #69: justify my intuition When Adele tells Alix it's dangerous to fish today but gives him no further logic to back it up, he demands justification. Adele becomes frustrated that he doesn't trust her, and gives him some attitude before acknowledging that she's willing to give him some kind of demonstration so that he'll trust her more easily in the future. 0357 adele #70: less a mystery Adele consents to let Alix watch her puzzle out why he shouldn't risk fishing, and through a predictive line diagram Adele figures out that consuming any fish caught that day would cause sickness. Alix asks questions about how Adele learned to use her abilities, and she begins to tell him what she knows. 0361 adele #71: rarest of the rare Alix and Adele discuss the possibility of Adele's next student, and Alix is skeptical that humans with psychic abilities even exist. Adele resigns herself to having to put up with his disbelief, but she loses some respect for him permanently. 0363 adele #72: the big picture Adele and Alix continue to discuss their thoughts, and this time they cover their satisfaction with the current outdoor living situation (Alix would like to get something less "primitive"), and Adele inquires about Alix's aspirations in life. 0365 adele #73: no sense of self Adele explains that she will eventually enlist Alix's help in tracking down the invisible woman in the forest. She wants to help this person from another dimension because she has come from so far away that she's lost nearly all of herself. Adele shows Alix a little of her methodology for researching the issue, but he decides to go get breakfast, and leaves her alone. 0371 adele #74: coming home to them A montage issue discusses Adele's various attempts to make life better for her companions, and focuses on the hiking trips she takes to the city to acquire supplies. The necessary items she picks up aren't the only reason she journeys alone, though. The trips are necessary vacations for her mental health--and they help her properly appreciate her company when she returns. 0373 adele #75: when soon comes Adele decides it's a good day to try to gather the crew and find the invisible woman. She's realized that this mysterious singing person in the forest is likely to respond to food, so she and the guys split up and walk into the forest, holding fragrant snacks. Once alone, Adele realizes she hears humming and begins to follow the voice. She intends to be ready when the creature stops to rest. 0375 adele #76: the only sign of her Adele tracks the invisible woman into the forest and manages to get her attention with the cooked fish she's carrying. She's able to see the strange distorted outline of the creature. After the woman drops the washcloth and seems disgusted, Adele realizes the creature only eats plants. The adventure ends when the woman flies away. 0377 adele #77: safety net Adele heads off to collect the others who are still searching for the invisible woman, and she ends up running into Alix, who's had a scare because of running into a wild animal that wanted his food. He demands to know why Adele didn't warn him about the near-attack, and she maintains that she didn't know about it. She makes it very clear that she is not to be regarded as responsible for his safety even though she does promise to warn him if she knows about danger in advance, and she privately ponders what the extent of her responsibility for her crew actually is. 0385 adele #78: language left After Alix met and described his encounter with the invisible woman in the forest, Adele discusses how they might approach her next time, and wonders whether she has any language left from her old dimension. Weaver asks whether she remembers her native language, and after reciting something in Shioan to demonstrate what it sounds like, she wonders about how long she'll retain her language when she has no one to speak it with. 0389 adele #79: giving her choices Adele decides to see if she can get the invisible woman to make choices using words, and offers her three different foods. The woman doesn't respond well to Adele's encouragement and isn't able to comprehend the way she's using words in context. She decides she'll have to return with a partner in order to demonstrate the behavior she wants. 0393 adele #80: connecting the concepts Adele and Alix try to demonstrate to the invisible woman the proper way of expressing which food they like. They act out scenarios for her which feature them asking for their favorite foods and receiving them. When they finally present the question of "which food do you like?" to the invisible woman, she has a breakthrough and chooses a food, though she's unable to do so if the wording of the question isn't exactly the same. Adele feels that weak conditioning is not true learning, but that it is nevertheless an improvement to not being able to communicate with her at all. 0401 adele #81: more tools Now that the group has agreed to try letting Neptune wear a dress, it falls to Adele to get her to put it on for the first time. It takes some cajoling, but Adele manages to dress their invisible friend and makes sure the dress fits her all right. She takes the newly dressed member of their group back to the base for a meal. 0407 adele #82: a reason to trust When Weaver asks Adele to give him some explanation for why she thinks it's okay to possibly put Neptune in more danger from predators by making her wear clothes, Adele privately accepts that Weaver and the others will need occasional reminders and proof for why they can trust that her advice is sound, even if she can't always justify what she says without doing extra homework. She searches out the information Weaver wants--why Neptune is still safe from wild animals even if they can now visually detect her--and finds out that Neptune smells bad to wild animals because of something in her blood. 0409 adele #83: eye to eye Continuing her conversation with Weaver, Adele discusses why and in what capacity they'd like to get involved in Neptune's life, and she explains that the invisible woman needs mental stimulation from them in order to regain some of her sense of self. But after Weaver says they see eye to eye, Adele laughs at the idea of someone so small saying that, and ends up offending Weaver through refusing to tell him what she's laughing at. When he flies away, she wonders what flying feels like. 0421 adele #84: to matter Adele goes to the city for a supply run and unexpectedly gets catcalled by guys in a car as she's walking by a highway. Knowing that they wouldn't exactly be attracted to her if they knew she wasn't human, she starts reflecting on the role of companionship in her life, and begins feeling very alone because she really doesn't feel that anyone loves her or truly cares about her. 0433 adele #85: advantage Adele introduces a montage of games played by the beach crew in their leisure time. It seems that no matter what they play, one of them has a reason they have difficulty participating; Weaver is too small to play Frisbee, Alix has trouble seeing distant numbers in aiming-based score games, and Dax's word skills are too poor to be competitive in language games. As for Adele, she's barred from playing cards with her companions except in pure luck games because her advantages make it too easy for her to win. She wishes she had someone with her skills to play against. 0441 adele #86: today's the day Adele awakens and has a mysterious thought in her head: "today's the day." She realizes that during her trip to the city she will be bringing someone home with her, and she can't seem to discern who or why. As she ponders the nature of her predictions and her trust in her abilities, she realizes she needs to give her gift license to work, and also remembers her teacher telling her something similar. Treasuring the memory of her mentor's words, Adele walks along the highway and trusts her feet to take her where she is supposed to be. 0443 adele #87: a hand by a stranger Adele is resting by the side of the road when she's surprised to get an offer from a stranger to take her into the city. She examines her feelings about the situation and realizes it is not dangerous, but feels nervous all the same about having to share space and conversation with a strange man. But his offer to help her does make her feel less lonely, so she accepts. 0445 adele #88: behind my hood Adele and the driver introduce themselves, and she finds out his name is Webster. They share more awkward conversation that involves Webster fixating on what she looks like and why she's wearing a robe. Adele has a realization that Webster's ex-wife had special surgery to look like a cat and he still found her beautiful, proving perhaps he's not particularly put off by non-human looks. She's intrigued. 0451 adele #89: my weird side Adele continues to feel that Webster is trying to make romantic overtures toward her, so she decides to introduce an element of her weird side to the conversation and offers to pay him for giving her a ride by predicting lottery numbers for him. He seems relatively open-minded--though she can also tell he doesn't exactly believe her--and she senses that he wants to know more about her story. She wonders how much to tell him. 0453 adele #90: foreign to me Adele takes a nap in Webster's truck and watches as he does ordinary things that are foreign to her, like getting gas. Then he buys her a package of Twinkies and notices her hands while she's eating them, commenting on her skin color and asking if she's Native American. Adele has no good answer for her origin, and Webster assumes she just doesn't want to talk about herself. She leaves it at that. 0455 adele #91: more to existence Webster again expresses curiosity about what Adele looks like under the robe, and she finds his curiosity irritating but admits she'll be wondering about him too after they part. He asks if she can see what he looks like from under the robe, and after she admits that she can see without her eyes, Webster pressures her to recite what she knows about him. Irritated, she begins to reply in detail just to show him there's far more to existence than what he can see with his eyes. 0457 adele #92: like we're friends Adele continues to tell Webster what she knows about his appearance, weaving in details that she wouldn't be able to know just by looking at him. He accepts this, saying he doesn't know how she's doing that but likes "being seen," and tells her he wants to talk like they're friends. So she asks him about his son (revealing that she knows he has one and that he's a single father), and he asks about her living situation. They're now approaching the city, which is Adele's destination. 0459 adele #93: not goodbye As they reach the city and Adele tells Webster where to let her off, he asks if she'll have dinner with him and she refuses. He seems again dismayed that he can't see her face, and she apologizes but stands firm. Then she gives him some small-pot lottery numbers that she promised him and he writes down his address for her, asking if she'll send him a postcard. She agrees, and realizes her feelings about him fall into a new context now that she knows she can continue to converse with him. 0465 adele #94: i'm different too Adele completes her shopping trip and is pondering the trip home when she notices a child sitting in an alley. As she approaches, she realizes it's a homeless little girl with unusual features, and her intuition tells her that living in the city is dangerous--both because someone is after her and because it will be terrible for her to become totally self-aware while living around normal people. Adele decides to take the girl with her, and takes down her hood to make contact and show her that she's also different. 0467 adele #95: is it real? After having established a decent rapport with the child, Adele tries to think of a good way to forge trust, and determines that an independent child will respond more to fulfillment of wants rather than needs. With that she discovers that the child likes the outdoors, and when she begins to describe the beach with its trees and ocean and sand, it's no surprise that the child reacts with enthusiasm and wants to go see it--as long as Adele reassures her that it's not just a tale from a book. 0469 adele #96: it explains As they're walking hand in hand toward the beach home, Adele notices the child doesn't walk very well and seems to be tiring, so she carries her and realizes she's suspiciously light. However, as soon as she falls asleep, she becomes heavy, alerting Adele that something very unusual is going on with this kid. After she finally wakes up, Adele encourages her to walk again, and this time, she hovers slightly instead of walking. This, Adele thinks, explains everything. 0471 adele #97: no such recognition Adele finds she has to make frequent stops to keep the child entertained and comfortable, so as she rests and lets her play in the trees, Adele admires her freedom of movement and writes in her journal. She finds herself beginning a letter to Webster instead of writing her feelings to herself, though, and wonders whether Webster would have any child-rearing advice for her. 0474 adele #98: something amazing As the beach group watches the newly arrived child playing in the water, Dax worries about her being in the water, but Adele assures him it doesn't matter. They all watch her get on top of the cave with surprising ease, and Adele just knows very shortly she will display her flying. This comes true when birds fly overhead and she chases them. The group is understandably shocked, but Alix has the first outburst, expressing fear and annoyance that Adele would take such a thing on. Dax suggests breakfast. 0478 adele #99: a good thing you're here Adele decides to have a talk with Alix about including the new girl in their breakfast, and she wants him to invite her. He admits being intimidated and reluctant to interact with her, and Adele suggests that he, as the most human-looking person there, will help her feel welcome. He grudgingly goes out to the shore to try to invite her to breakfast. 0480 adele #100: bigger than flying When Alix comes back to camp furious and empty-handed, Adele wants to know what happened while he was trying to retrieve the girl. He claims to have been shoved into the sand, which mystifies Adele and Weaver. Adele ventures out to bring her back, only to find her hand opening on its own to let the girl's foot go free. Weaver volunteers that he thinks she's done something to him too--he felt something pull his feet when they were flying even though the girl wasn't near him--and Alix panics. He demands that if Adele wants to be trusted when she says they're safe, she needs to define the limits of the girl's abilities for them. She begins to meditate on the answer. 0481 adele #101: i'll show them Adele comes to the conclusion that their newest group member's unusual talent allows her to move objects without touching them, and that it is practically limitless. Alix flips out over how dangerous that sounds, panicking over how they can possibly expect to discipline a child like this, and he unthinkingly calls the child a monster. Adele becomes furious, unable to believe Alix could say such a thing considering his own experience being different in a human world, and she lectures him on how important it is that SHE never believes she's a monster. Adele heads off to try again to bring the girl back to the group. 0485 adele #102: cut her roots Adele feeds their new group member some blackberry paste and tries to tame her hair, only to find that the child is capable of telekinetically brushing and braiding it. Adele is a bit sad when she hears that the braiding was learned from a friend she will no longer be seeing. 0487 adele #103: sometimes While bathing Ivy in the river, Adele realizes she can have decent conversations when the child is grounded with a distraction like playing in water, and they end up having a conversation about whether she's ever seen anyone else fly and how she feels about being the only one who flies her way. Adele feels heartbroken that such a young child had to learn to hide to avoid being shamed and frightened, and she segues into discussing how she'll teach her some academics, among other things. She muses about returning to the city and getting a PO Box to communicate with Webster. 0490 adele #104: the end of wanting Now that the little girl has returned to the camp and is dozing in Adele's lap, Adele contemplates her future and asks Alix if he can acquire some supplies for her on a trip to the city. As he prepares a fish he's just caught, Adele fills him in on what she needs and also requests his help getting a PO box. When Weaver and Dax return with more food, the child wakes up, and Adele muses about how much better her future will be in terms of being fed, taught, and loved. 0493 adele #105: just a kid Now that the child has fallen asleep, Adele is wondering about how to handle getting her to bed, but surprisingly, Alix volunteers to carry her into the cave and let her use his bed. When he comes back and admits he was enjoying watching her sleep and that he felt very peaceful looking at her, Adele praises him for helping with her and mellowing out regarding her presence. 0497 adele #106: quite an ordeal When Alix stomps into the cave in the morning and wakes Adele up to vent his frustration and demand guidance, Adele is none too pleased. She understands Alix is upset that Weaver and the girl are targeting him for mischief, but believes him to be overreacting. Still, she does admit he has a point that they should all be modeling proper behavior for her, and agrees--distractedly--to talk to them for him. Alix stomps out in a huff and Adele wishes he'd stop making himself into a victim. 0500 adele #107: referee Alix, discontent with holding a sleeping child on his lap, decides to try to move her, but she has a wetting accident in his lap, and Alix is furious because he thinks it was an intentional form of harassment coached by Weaver. (And it doesn't help that Weaver thinks it's hilarious.) When Alix stomps off to change his pants, Adele is left trying to calm him down and assuring him she'll talk to the girl--and have Dax talk to Weaver. She takes the child to the ocean to get cleaned up. 0504 adele #108: a little flower Adele takes the girl to the ocean to clean her up, but ends up chasing her around as she plays near the cave and pretends to be a flower. Adele asks whether she'd like to be named after a flower, which gets her attention. 0508 adele #109: i think i miss you Adele adds a few more essential items to the list for Alix to take with him to the city, and then she writes a letter to Webster, which Alix will be mailing for her. Adele is surprised that she becomes so honest and vulnerable during her letter-writing, and realizes she feels like a different person when she communicates with Webster. She likes the feeling and hopes Webster will answer her. 0511 adele #110: any words Adele is very pleased with Alix's acquisitions, especially a stack of library books. She decides to make the next day Ivy's "first day of school" and reads a book about school with her over breakfast, and finds that someone has tried to teach her the alphabet and that she knows A and B. Adele ponders how to get Ivy excited about learning so she won't regard her education as a chore. 0517 adele #111: the harmony Adele finds herself in the middle of Weaver and Alix bickering over Ivy trying to take their "jobs," with Alix feeling upstaged and made redundant and Weaver thinking she just needs to mellow a little. Adele decides to ask Ivy to finish the jobs she started, and when she predictably gets bored shelling nuts, Adele unintentionally hurts Ivy's feelings by implying she didn't do a good job if she didn't finish. She acknowledges that she'll need to apologize to Ivy after she's had some time to think. 0519 adele #112: check for smiles Adele and Ivy have a conversation about the importance of a job and why having one makes Ivy feel good about herself. Adele tells her she'd really like her to consider learning to read part of her job, and she thinks about her doubts regarding raising Ivy. 0523 adele #113: grooming A wordless comic depicts Adele brushing Ivy's hair, which turns into a cute play session wherein they play with each other's hair and clip barrettes into it. 0526 adele #114: up close Based on some observations about Ivy's reading, Adele concludes that Ivy is unable to read text that's too close to her face. Adele is unsure how to treat farsightedness. 0529 ivy #115: bewitched Adele checks her post office box alone at night and finds a letter from Webster waiting for her. He says very romantic things to her which make her feel desired in a way she appreciates, and she speculates about the future of their relationship. 0539 adele #116: because i can Adele wanders homeward after mailing her letter to Webster. It's the wee hours and she ponders as she walks through the city, thinking about how her companions need her and she's well placed to carry their burdens, and how much she needs a fantasy like Webster to sustain her. She concludes that she loves being the group's guide the way she does, but that having an escape will be nice too. 0543 adele #117: no such thing for us To help Ivy find a word for her ability, Adele explains that she also had to do the same thing. Comparing her ability to see without eyes to Ivy's ability to move without hands, she encourages her to describe her experience and find a word that's similar enough. Adele suggests "energy," and after Adele explains what energy is, Ivy happily accepts it as appropriate. 0550 ivy #118: good little girl Adele gets a notion that Ivy needs her help, so she tracks her down and realizes she's been startled and upset by her encounter with an invisible forest creature that screamed. Adele concludes that it must have been Neptune and that they scared each other, and offers to help Ivy find her to make amends. Adele is personally relieved to see that Ivy apparently feels remorse. 0552 adele #119: something gentle Adele and Ivy track their invisible friend and Ivy gets upset when Adele reveals that Neptune can talk enough to have said her name. She doesn't understand why Adele is trying to tell her they can't have a conversation, and she gets upset about it. Adele calms her down and encourages her to try something gentle: singing. This works until Ivy gets overenthusiastic and scares Neptune away, so Adele resigns herself to reassuring Ivy for the remainder of the evening. 0556 adele #120: visualize Adele completes the drawing of Neptune that Ivy asked for, and she receives rave reviews from all the others. Alix is curious how Adele learned to draw, and when she says she reproduces what she visualizes, he suggests this might be an offshoot of her seer capabilities. This upsets her enough to snap at him, insisting that all of her talents don't always have to go back to that. She wonders if anything she does can truly be viewed by others as independent from her more unusual abilities. 0560 adele #121: the right thing to say Adele thinks Neptune isn't ready to trust Ivy yet and tries to avoid startling her, and she ends up tying the friendship bracelet on Neptune's wrist. Ivy is delighted when Neptune appears to look at the bracelet on her arm, but then she gets startled by her red eyes and scares her away. Adele wishes she knew the right thing to say when she knows something bad is coming. 0565 adele #122: her choice The gang is having breakfast by a low fire, mixing some tart berries Weaver gathered into a breakfast mix, but then they notice Ivy is missing and Adele confirms that she's "gone." But she can't say where or why exactly, and she feels strongly that chasing her down would be counterproductive. Adele is convinced she'll come back, but is unsure of whether that's her intuition or her heart talking. 0569 adele #123: that unsure Dax and Adele continue to talk about what Dax wants to know about Adele's future sight. Dax reveals how horrifying it can sometimes be to be unsure, and while Adele acknowledges that she'll never feel like that, she says it can be scary to be responsible for interpreting what others can't see. 0577 adele #124: should she return Adele has a conference with the group and they all share thoughts on what they're going to do if Ivy returns to make her feel more connected to staying so she won't strike out on her own again. Adele will adjust her reading lessons; Weaver will make a daily flying date; Alix will enlist her help catching fish; and Dax just isn't sure yet. But after all the decisions have been made, Adele admits that she still has no idea if Ivy is returning. 0584 adele #125: protect what's inside Ivy asks Adele to look at her injured chest. Adele realizes she's looking for reassurance even though Weaver has already said it will heal, so she has her lie down for an examination and explains that her ribs are in good condition and protected her. Ivy seems satisfied with this assessment, but Adele wonders what she would have done if Ivy had needed medical assistance. All she can do is try to prevent the need for it. 0589 adele #126: the ones who wrote them down Ivy comes to Adele for reading and asks how her reading helps Adele with anything. Adele explains how ideas can be conveyed if you write them down, and then people you can never meet can still tell you what they felt and thought. This conversation leads to Adele discussing what death is, and for some reason Ivy already knows what it means. Adele wonders what sorts of stories Ivy will tell when she can write. 0594 adele #127: spaces in between Adele makes more necessary purchases in the city and then reads a letter from Webster. He tells her about how a date he had wasn't enjoyable because the woman wasn't her, and that he needs to know more about her. He casually uses language that reminds her he thinks she's human, and asks for a photo of her that he can keep. She thinks about it. 0596 adele #128: faraway shot Adele asks Ivy to keep the camera and their photos a secret because she doesn't want Weaver, Alix, or Dax to know she's writing to Webster. Ivy understands and manages to console Adele for feeling conflicted about it, and under Adele's instructions, Ivy's able to help Adele take a photo of the two of them from very far away--a safe distance for Adele to feel she's not sacrificing her secrecy. 0599 adele #129: honest people Alix kicks up dust about Adele having a secret and implies that he'll get Ivy to tell him what it is. Adele and Dax agree that he's being nasty and he isn't entitled to know her secrets in any way. She decrees that her so-called secret has nothing to do with him and that she can't trust him with her confidence if he petulantly demands access to what she considers personal information. He protests that her secrets sometimes put him in uncomfortable positions he can't fight and sullenly apologizes. Adele is not sure she accepts this. 0603 adele #130: six days Adele mails her letter to Webster and is frustrated that she'll have to wait so long to hear from him again. She then realizes through her intuition that Webster will be responding quickly and she'll be able to receive his next letter during her trip if she hangs out in the city for six days. She happily does so, assuming the others won't be worried, and looks eagerly forward to receiving his next letter. 0605 adele #131: the face you hide Adele picks up Webster's letter and reads it in a bathroom. In it, Webster again expresses desire to see more of Adele and learn whatever she's hiding. Adele offers to let him choose whether to keep their delightful fantasy or learn some truth he might not like. She mails the letter after telling him she will call him on the phone after he answers her letter. 0607 adele #132: the beginning of the end Adele has worked herself into a tizzy imagining all the potential negative outcomes of Webster's reaction to her letter, and when she returns to her companions, she immediately snaps at them and isolates herself. Ivy comes to comfort her, and Adele sends an apology back to the group with her. While pondering who she might be able to confide in, Dax approaches her, and Adele decides she'll talk about her doubts to him. 0609 adele #133: the heart finds a way Dax continues to talk to Adele about her conundrum over Webster, and he asks about her options. Dax is optimistic that Adele will be able to tell the truth and still retain her closeness with him, but Adele isn't so sure. She can't see a way her relationship with him can lead to anything good. 0613 adele #134: teaching them respect Weaver comes to Adele for a request from the future. He wants her to figure out whether Alix really is going to get hurt by Ivy losing her temper the way he thinks she will. Adele is impressed that Weaver cares that much about Alix, and Weaver notes that he's also nervous Ivy will hate herself if she hurts him. When Adele does look into the future and see the danger, she also realizes it needs to happen so Ivy and Alix will both learn to respect Ivy's power, and it's best for it to happen when she is young and the damage won't be fatal. 0614 adele #135: follow the fantasy Adele checks her mail at the post office and is surprised that Webster answered that he actually doesn't want "the truth" after all. He wants to keep enjoying the fantasy and seeing where it takes them, because that's "true" too, and he's concerned that Adele is trying to drop bombshells just as a defense mechanism to push him away before she gets invested. Adele goes to a hotel and calls him on the phone, and they begin to chat about incidentals. Adele is thrilled with how satisfying it is to have access to everyday conversations like this. 0616 adele #136: formative Adele continues talking to Webster on the phone and they discuss their education. Adele admits she remembers maybe having an education, and discusses her situation with educating Ivy. She worries that withholding important information about her formative experiences will damage their relationship, but knows it's unavoidable for now. 0617 adele #137: his kind of pretty Adele continues talking to Webster on the phone and they discuss his ex-wife. Adele remembers that Webster's ex actually had special surgery to look more feline because she felt her soul was a cat, and Adele and Webster discuss this. She calls him very accepting, and they move on to talk about other kinds of body modification. 0619 adele #138: the present Adele's talk with Webster continues as they discuss yawns that trigger the other person to yawn, fading into a talk about intimacy and making another person feel good. Adele is a little embarrassed when the conversation leads into her admission that she can't remember being intimate with anyone, and Webster brings up how her past and her future may be empty of intimacy but maybe the present doesn't have to be. He asks where she is. 0620 adele #139: can't imagine Adele puts Webster solidly in his place, making it very clear that he isn't meeting her tonight and his expectation to do so was inconsistent with his suggestion that he wants to preserve their fantasy instead of knowing the truth. They talk about what could possibly make him reject her and she invites him to simply change his answer next time he writes to her. They agree to fall asleep on the phone together. 0624 adele #140: hard on her Adele decides Alix needs to go to the city for medical care. Getting there will be the problem, so she proposes they let Ivy fly them there, but Alix aggressively objects on the grounds that Ivy broke his arm in the first place and can't be trusted. Adele agrees to respect this and readies Alix for departure, worried about Ivy's emotional state but figuring Weaver will handle it. 0626 adele #141: what you want to say Adele walks Alix out to the main road to help him get the right ride into town for medical treatment. She offers to pass the time with some conversation but he rejects it, believing Adele just wants to lecture him on how his injury was his own fault. She denies this, but he goes on to say he knows everyone blames him for Ivy's behavior. Once he gets his ride, he says he might not come back if things aren't going to change. Adele wonders what she should do now that she's relatively close to the city. 0629 adele #142: safe and silent Adele checks her mailbox and has a letter from Webster saying he just wants her to keep her secret for longer since he can never take it back if he says she should disclose. Adele tells Webster she's in the city because Ivy broke Alix's arm, and he comments that her group is like the X-Men, and that if her secret is bigger than THAT, it must be huge. Adele ruminates on how big the secret is. 0633 adele #143: you guessed Weaver teasingly asks Adele if she's writing to her boyfriend, at which point she briefly believes Dax or Ivy must have told Weaver about her writing to Webster. As she realizes that didn't happen and he was just razzing her, he presses her for details while being offended that she never told him, and she says she didn't tell him because he'd act exactly like he's acting. She agrees to share now that the cat is out of the bag though. 0639 adele #144: relative maturity Adele, Dax, and Weaver watch Ivy imitate a book character's hairstyle. Prompted by Weaver's queries, Adele discloses that Ivy is between five and six years old, and that she'd be starting school soon if she were a typical child. Adele encourages Ivy's self-grooming by requesting a hairstyle from her, and decides she'll be pulling her into helping with laundry and taking care of her own baths from now on. 0643 adele #145: by myself Adele tries to get Ivy's help doing laundry, but she prefers to just hang the clothes after Adele cleans them. As Adele tries to explain why it's important for Ivy to learn to help with laundry by doing the whole task herself, Ivy just insists she doesn't want to do it alone. They come to a satisfying conclusion on this topic. 0645 adele #146: for you and for them Adele is knitting when Ivy comes to her and flops into her lap, despondent. Adele drags the story out of her: Neptune got spooked by something she did, and Ivy is worried she scared her away with her energy, and that this will be a pattern for the rest of her life. Adele reassures her that this time Neptune was scared of Ivy's loud laughter, but when it comes to dealing with the future, she's sure Ivy will find ways to make it easier as she becomes more experienced. 0647 adele #147: uncomfortably close Adele goes to town for a supply run and calls Webster again. They discuss how Webster has trouble understanding Adele's powers as genuine and he admits he sometimes imagines she's actually spying on him through conventional means. They have a conversation about it and Adele can't help but think about how close this conversation is to the conversation that would cause her to lose him. 0650 adele #148: something that scares us While reading with Adele, Ivy notices some of the cartoon students in her book have missing teeth, and it scares her. When Adele looks for a way to explain losing childhood teeth, her abilities tell her Ivy won't be losing her teeth, so she's able to reassure her it only happens to human children, not her. Ivy's still very disturbed by it and Adele concludes that everyone, even the most fearless, has something that scares them. 0652 adele #149: it's coming Adele wakes up with the word "ai-shaifa" in her head, and after some meditation, rediscovers what a "change-storm" is. She realizes it's connected to how she and her otherworldly companions came to this world and predicts another one is coming in about a year. 0655 adele #150: why not this? Weaver asks Adele why she can't give him more specific information about the event that's coming. She says emotions and additional possibilities that aren't solidified yet complicate matters, and they end by having Adele request Weaver's primary question so she can let it ruminate and perhaps end up dreaming about it. He says he wants to know if anyone in his home dimension is missing him and wants him to come home. 0658 adele #151: this destructive truth After Weaver asked Adele to ponder whether he might have left anyone behind in his home dimension, she comes to him with the news that someone there does wish he would come home. Before telling him who wants him back, she considers telling a lie so she can keep him here, because no matter what, his home dimension has lost the person they love. But she determines that she has to give him the truth, and confesses that he has a mate and a daughter. Adele hopes he still decides to stay in this dimension because he essentially has a daughter here too. 0663 adele #152: designate someone Adele is in the city again on the phone with Webster and he's relieved to hear from her, having been worried she would never write or call again. They make a pact to notify each other by proxy if anything happens to them, and that they won't just stop writing without explanation. Adele realizes she will have to designate Alix as her messenger, and realizes also that it's time to go get him. 0665 adele #153: i haven't changed Adele finds where Alix is staying and enters his friend's dwelling to invite him back to the beach. He ponders aloud that he's worried about how he'll deal with Ivy even though he knows it was largely his fault--because neither of them have changed. He needs the night to think about it and invites Adele to stay the night. 0667 adele #154: progress Adele wakes up at Alix's friend's house to him asking if she wants breakfast. He gets her a coffee and says he's ready to go with her. They pick up a few supplies but he's not very talkative on the walk. Adele prods him to discuss what's on his mind and he admits he hasn't figured out how he's going to handle the Ivy situation when he gets back, but that he knows he's the problem but not how to fix it. Adele figures he's made more progress than he thinks if he knows that. 0668 adele #155: so much of myself After a mild nudge from Adele, Alix starts talking. He pours out an admission that he does care about Ivy and recognizes that she doesn't deserve to be treated like a demon (and he knows what that feels like!), but also acknowledges that he doesn't know how to stop being the source of those negative statements because of how he feels about her. He asks Adele if she's capable of providing a shield for him as he figures out where the line is, and she assures him Ivy has done some thinking too. 0674 adele #156: foreign dimensions Alix asks Adele to summarize the dimensional event that is coming up, so she does so. She explains about how the change-storm event works and what decision the others (mostly Weaver) might be facing as a result. Alix is curious about nearby dimensions that might not require memory loss to travel to. 0676 adele #157: someone littler Adele has a short argument with Alix in the morning, and then spends some time with Ivy, who's acting a little subdued. Adele feeds her some oatmeal, which she loves, and reads her a story. Ivy notices a little girl in the story has a doll, and she asks if it means she's practicing to be a mom and asks for her own doll. 0680 adele #158: sleep mirrors wakefulness Adele finds Dax sitting with a sleeping Ivy in his lap. He asks whether encouraging control while awake will actually help Ivy avoid accidental telekinetic outbursts in her sleep, and Adele says it's a useful comment because she'll be less stressed about sleeping if she believes that, but it's actually not true that she will grow out of it with more control. Still, it's a risk like any other, and it will be bearable. Adele privately ponders her role as the forecaster of unfortunate circumstances. 0682 adele #159: simpler Adele arrives in the city after a few things don't really go her way, so she buys herself some candy and talks to Webster on the phone. He asks about her friend's situation, and she's forgotten what he means by that; Webster reminds her that she told him about a friend who is deciding whether to live with his daughter, and she tells him as much as she can about that without revealing details she can't disclose. He completely accepts that she can't explain everything and they both agree they wish her life was simpler. 0684 adele #160: skeptic Adele continues talking to Webster and he brings up a skeptic friend of his. They discuss skepticism and whether it's reasonable to question extraordinary claims. Adele thinks it's okay as long as someone is polite about it, and she also has no problem either refusing to engage or proving her position in a big way when someone's acting unacceptably. Webster feels like people should really believe each other by default. 0686 adele #161: consistent Ivy wakes Adele up by poking her in the face with her new doll and complaining that the baby doesn't want to go to bed. Ivy begs to take the doll around to see her new home, and Adele tells her it's fine if she goes to find Weaver and takes a flashlight. Alix objects to this because it's inconsistent parenting to let Ivy have no schedule, and Adele disagrees but really can't explain her philosophy. She's just irritated that Alix wants to criticize her parenting but isn't really doing any of his own. 0689 adele #162: where you're going Alix takes off his shirt preceding a soak in his favorite pool, and after trading some strained language about whether Adele thinks he's attractive, she drops a bomb on him: he'll need to start avoiding that pool pretty soon because it's going to become a gateway between worlds during the upcoming event. Adele also informs Alix that he will be tasked with making sure Ivy stays out of the pool. 0691 adele #163: it happened The change-storm begins with the pool taking on a shinier look. Adele attends the event, with Dax and Weaver attending her. For a long, tense while, it seems like nothing is happening, but then something shifts that Adele can sense, and before she can explain it to the others, an unexplained stream of glow bursts out of the water and into the sky. 0694 adele #164: the center Adele answers a few questions about the dimensional travel and travelers before shushing her companions and trying to envision the structure of the interconnected worlds. She begins drawing a map of it and opens up to questions again. She realizes it's possible the direction of the shift may be inward toward the center of the universe instead of outward toward remote dimensions like Weaver and Dax's. And her own dimension is the hub, she realizes. She anticipates getting a glimpse of her homeworld even though she won't be going back there. 0696 adele #165: invaded Adele explains more information about the different worlds and how they connect together, ending in a revelation that her own world was invaded by a neighboring species long ago. Connections with other worlds aren't necessarily a good thing, though the human world's connection with Fae has never resulted in attacks. At this point Alix brings Ivy out of the forest claiming she'd been attacked. 0698 adele #166: in this moment Adele senses that the pool is about to shift one way or the other, and finally amidst questions from Dax and Weaver, she explains that it is shifting inward--toward her central homeworld--instead of outward toward one of their remote worlds. Adele is hoping for a connection to a world one orbit away from hers because that would be groundbreaking, but then she is overwhelmed when the connection to her homeworld is attached to memories. She realizes many truths about what she once knew, and finally remembers Tabitha by name. 0702 adele #167: stepping-stone world Adele continues to observe the flash. She worries that the human world will be connected to Shio, because she's realized Shio colonized and "stole" other worlds, and she doesn't know if she should be afraid of it. But the pool instead connects to a world on the human world's same orbital track, Ment. Then Ment's pool connects to another dimension called Gow, and then as soon as Gow throws a one-way connection back to the human world, bubbles begin to surface in the pool. Adele knows someone or something is coming. 0704 adele #168: transparent Adele is smitten with the nonhuman girl who's just come through the portal, but Dax points out she has a terrible head wound; they just couldn't see it because the child's blood is clear. Adele asks Dax to bring supplies, and while she thinks the girl will live, she can't help but notice that these injuries were inflicted intentionally; she gleans that her father tried to kill her. 0709 adele #169: still nameless Adele instructs Ivy on how to move the new girl to their cave so they can put her in a bed and let her rest, but Adele is very clear that Ivy must never release her hold on the girl's hands and feet or she can get severely scratched. The child doesn't seem ready to relax, so they give her some space, and Ivy asks about names. Adele has a feeling that maybe she should think about naming the child after her teacher, who wanted a child named after her. 0713 adele #170: trust us Adele supervises as Ivy continues to coax the new child through eating berries (which she spits out). Ivy wants to release her hands and Adele agrees that she probably feels terrified at not being able to move, but when Ivy lets her hands go she flails and scratches herself. They have to bandage her up. But then Ivy sits opposite the girl and releases just her hands--not her arms--and prompts her to move her hands in the same way she's moving her own. The girl is able to copy the movement and they have their first real connection. 0715 adele #171: on our guard Adele watches Ivy and the new girl bonding now that Ivy has freed the girl's arms to play with toys. But as they get tired, Adele has to figure out sleeping arrangements. Ivy suggests she can cuddle with her and keep her energy secured around her for protection, but Adele rejects this as she knows Ivy cannot be depended on to control her will during sleep. Adele develops a plan to put the girl somewhere else, with Weaver standing guard through the night, and Ivy volunteers her doll to keep her company. 0717 adele #172: under control Adele is dismayed that she now has ANOTHER new responsibility helping to take care of a faerie child that Alix apparently found in the woods, having been left behind by the recent faerie invasion. Everything hits Adele at once and she's just so tired that she begins to break down. Dax and Alix reassure her that they can actually handle the situation and she's safe to get some rest. She decides she can trust them. 0720 adele #173: easier on you Adele wakes up and immediately feels the stress of the upcoming day about to overwhelm her. She knows she needs to monitor the flash's activities and try to help the new children adjust to their new lives, but she's struggling. Alix, surprisingly, is there with some morning tea, and then he gives her a massage she actually enjoys. He wants her to know she doesn't have to handle all this by herself. She feels strangely empowered by his support. 0724 adele #174: physical eyes Alix comes to beg Adele to come see the sick girl. She's resistant at first, and offended that Alix apparently doesn't trust her judgment, but she realizes Alix wasn't willing to gamble the girl's health on trusting Adele when she's tired and overwhelmed, so she gives in and brings Ivy to look at her. The child is cold and needs Dax to keep her warm, but Adele assures everyone that she's going to be okay and this is just how people of her race experience illness. 0726 adele #175: non-essential Adele takes Alix back to the cave with her and explains that she'd like to "deputize" him to run the show when it comes to who's in charge of which kid. When he disagrees with how she'd do it and points out that he should get to do it his way if she's leaving him in charge, she agrees (with the caveat that he should come let her know if his philosophy doesn't work). 0729 adele #176: orphaned world Adele is finally able to return to the pool and catch up on the flash. She realizes it's been busy and has gone back to her world, followed by connecting to a "ghost world" that has never had any paths to it before. This orphaned world where no one lives is now connected to the rest of the network and she wonders if there's now someone there to talk to. 0734 adele #177: what children have i known? Adele appreciates Dax's support and company besides the pool. She tells him everything she's thinking as the pool shifts back to her homeworld, and discusses her lost family and what she remembers about them. She remembers that she and her teacher Tabitha had a fight about Adele wanting to bring her family's picture with her to the human world, and she wonders about her teacher's rationale. 0740 adele #178: nurse Alix interrupts Adele's work and says something's wrong with Thursday. He fell off Tabitha's head, and though he's uninjured, he's unconscious. Adele attempts to diagnose him and thinks maybe he needs nutrition ASAP, but they can't figure out how to get juice into him without risking choking. Dax suggests they brush the boy's antennae with juice so he'll "smell" it, and it works enough to wake him up to sip the juice. Adele is impressed. 0743 adele #179: the greater good Dax has left to go check on the others and Adele has fallen to brooding. She's ruminating on what her teacher took from her and whether it was wrong or whether she just can't see the wisdom. How much personal sacrifice is too much? She vows that if she gets a student, she will allow them to participate in their choices in a more authentic way than she was allowed. 0746 adele #180: no futures i can see Now that Ivy has shown up next to the pool where Adele is sitting, she's scared that Ivy will somehow end up getting lost in another dimension. But Ivy isn't warned away by Adele's suggestion that it's dangerous there; she wants to protect Adele. So Adele searches the future and sees no futures where Ivy actually does what she fears she will. She admits to Ivy that there are no scary creatures and that she just was afraid Ivy would go in the water despite being told not to. Ivy thinks that is a silly worry. 0749 adele #181: what's next All of a sudden, Adele realizes the flash is over, and the reality sets in that she has no distractions now and has to go back to her life (which has changed in a huge way that she still hasn't processed). Ivy encourages her to claim her right to take a nap instead of worrying about it. 0750 adele #182: as our own After a good, satisfying sleep, Adele feels much more hopeful and clear-headed. She reunites with her found family and explains some revelations she's had about Thursday and Tabitha (who will now be called Tab because she keeps feeling weird about the name). She gives the others perspective on why they must raise these children as their own, and privately, she feels comforted that the guys and Ivy handled so much without her. 0757 adele #183: five things Ivy doesn't want Adele to go on her errand unless she can come along. Adele still refuses and Ivy begins bargaining, insisting that she be given five of her own demands if she is to allow Adele to leave. Ivy then lists five things she wants, including sparkles. Adele agrees and Ivy grants her permission to go. 0761 adele #184: another letter Adele goes shopping for promised and necessary items, and then she spends some time thinking about the letters she wants to send and letters she wants to write. She decides to go pick up Webster's letters that are waiting for her so she can decide whether to reply to those too. One is pretty typical for him, but the second one is short and pleads to see her. 0762 adele #185: soft heart Adele is dismayed at Webster's request to see her, alternately longing and angry. She feels he shouldn't demand such things of her knowing what she's already said on the matter. After arguing with herself, she mails her letters as if she doesn't know he wants to see her, and talks herself out of calling him too. Intending to just go home, she experiences misgivings, and acknowledges to herself that she wants their fantasy to continue. 0763 adele #186: minutes without you Adele searches out the source of Webster's inappropriate request to see her and realizes he was thinking of pursuing another woman but didn't know how to feel about their relationship. She decides to wait for him to get her letters and spends some time reading about jealousy in the library. She realizes her own jealousy evaporates if she believes she can still have a relationship with Webster in spite of any other relationships he might have. She calls him on the phone to discuss their situation and he finds the topic off-putting. She attempts to seek out the source of his objections. 0764 adele #187: hung up Webster and Adele continue their phone conversation and discuss whether a person can love more than one person at a time, in different ways or romantically. Webster really isn't open to the idea and Adele asks him to challenge it for several reasons. He counters: shouldn't she also challenge her assumptions when it comes to how impossible it is for them to be together in a more traditional way. They agree to consider each other's options until they correspond again. 0771 adele #188: a reason to talk Adele greets Dax when he returns from his hunting trip with Tab, but is a little dismayed that he didn't successfully hunt anything. When Dax explains that Tab was too loud but they had fun bonding over their wild sides anyway, Adele asks Dax if he might consider helping Tab also encourage her verbal skills, and he agrees to initiate speech more often, but Adele worries that she'll end up having to be responsible for the girl's speech development herself. 0773 adele #189: pictures of bad things Ivy objects to Tab having her own bed in the cave, wanting her to sleep in HER bed. Adele insists it's still dangerous and they get into an argument about how dangerous it is. Ivy is subdued when Adele makes it clear she's seen bad things happening if Ivy sleeps in the same bed with Tab. She's disturbed by the idea that Adele might have seen actual images of bad things happening to her. They discuss the necessity of it and Adele's future-telling pebbles. Ivy plays with them and Adele comments that she wishes she could move all the pebbles at once like Ivy can for ease of predictions. 0775 adele #190: in three dimensions Adele realizes that she can suddenly control her divination pebbles remotely because Ivy is letting her have access to her power somehow. Adele wants to experiment with her new opportunity to try a divination in three dimensions, but Ivy is uncomfortable and asks to stop, so Adele agrees. They discuss the experience and Ivy says she thinks she was seeing glimmers of images that must have been coming from Adele's powers. Whatever this connection is, they were sharing their powers in a limited way. Ivy agrees that she'll cooperate with experimenting in the future. 0779 adele #191: all business Adele braves the danger of taking Ivy to New York so she can use her assistance flying there and back with heavy supplies. Adele takes great care to avoid letting Ivy have any fun while in the city so she won't want to come back on her own; it's still too dangerous for her. Adele mails a letter and picks one up, and they buy some lumber for a project Alix wants to do. 0785 adele #192: you'll be missed Neptune wanders off eating apple slices and wants to be by herself. Alix causes an argument by exaggeratedly asking whether his desire to cook more fish will upset her because she's a vegetarian and implying the others expect him to have a permit or follow their rules. He gets angry when Weaver calls him out so he storms off to his shelter to work on it. Neptune, weirdly, follows him. A feather falls out of one of her wings and Ivy asks to keep it. 0790 adele #193: a conversational noise Dax thinks a noise Tab made during the Neptune exchange sounded almost like she was trying to talk, and Adele agrees. Weaver doesn't really see it that way, but Adele thinks if they all continue their efforts to talk to both children, they'll be talking soon. 0797 adele #194: indoors Alix has completed his structure on the beach and invites everyone to a housewarming party, but once they're all inside everyone wants to leave for various reasons--Dax feels cramped, Weaver doesn't like being reminded of his imprisonment, Ivy finds it stuffy and boring and takes Tab with her, leaving Adele with Alix. He suggests she can request invitations at anytime if she wants an indoor place since she's "civilized." She points out that he seems to have built the little house to keep people out and leaves also. 0799 adele #195: exceptional kindness Ivy and Adele are practicing their pebble technique and Adele uses it to find out what's going to happen to Alix's house. It's a little overwhelming for Ivy so they stop when she asks to stop. She asks about whether they should tell him what they saw and they discuss the ethics of helping people who don't really deserve it. 0805 adele #196: unimaginable Adele has Ivy fly them to the city so they can get supplies Alix is demanding for storage and sealing his house against rot. Adele gets a letter from Webster that she wants to talk to him about--he thinks he's guessed her secret and believes she's transgender and trying to hide it from him, and assures her in the letter that he would accept her if that was it. Adele gets Ivy to fall asleep after a heavy dinner and calls Webster to discuss it, dismissing his "theory" only to find him asking her what the real answer is. 0806 adele #197: being otherwise Webster again backs off a bit since Adele reminds him this knowledge is the end of their relationship. But when he asks her to answer whether she would be with him if it wasn't true, she first struggles to imagine being human and then agrees that if all else was the same, she would be with him. They then engage in some "Would you still love me if?" wordplay, and one of the hypothetical scenarios Adele offers is whether he would still love her if she were an alien. He claims it wouldn't matter, but she knows he'd be horrified outside a game. She feels some wrongness about it too, but not on his level. 0816 adele #198: faking it Alix comes in to see Adele, who is repairing some clothes. He confesses to her that he's rearranged his "assignment" from Dax to try to reprise successful social interactions, and worries that if he's trying to have another positive interaction with Adele, he'd be doing it in some kind of fake way. She discusses it with him and says she liked his offered back rub, and accepts another one. 0822 adele #199: running hot When Ivy's resistance to the cold is brought up by Alix again, Adele looks into it a bit and realizes it doesn't mean anything's wrong with her; she just runs hot. Alix is still concerned and wants her to stay warm. She cuddles with Weaver and Adele ruminates about the minor differences Ivy might have, which are probably always overshadowed by her major differences. She wonders what Ivy's adolescence will be like. 0827 adele #200: more to unlearn Adele and Alix are watching Tab and Ivy play in the water. Alix gives instruction to keep Ivy in control of her possibly overly rough actions. Adele privately evaluates Alix's interventions and is impressed that he consults her for whether he should give permission for Thursday to play with them. She thinks he's doing pretty well overall even though the bar is low for his behavior, but she acknowledges he has more to unlearn. 0829 adele #201: some of it is good Adele wants a word with Ivy, who has clearly been brooding about Adele's refusal to give up her relationship with Webster. She thanks her for being mature about it, acknowledging that Ivy is begrudgingly leaving Adele's business alone. And she says some parts of this relationship are good in a way she doesn't get to have in any other way, which makes her tolerate the bad aspects. Ivy seems to partially understand what Adele says, and thinks about comparing it to something in her life, but doesn't finish the thought. 0831 adele #202: because of love Ivy finds Adele writing a letter to Webster and volunteers that she's reluctantly okay with it now because she understands that love is so important to people, based on the radio show she listened to with Dax. She expresses being sad that Adele is going to lose her love, and Adele is interested in the radio show. 0834 adele #203: our big picture Adele sees that Alix has made a little gazebo from the remains of his original house. They discuss the possibility of having a more permanent structure in the future, with Adele finally coming to the conclusion that she wants her future prophecy students to have a comfortable place to study. She thinks it will be a while before any structure can be built, but she's interested in seriously thinking about it and planning for the future. She will bring some planning resources back next time she goes to the city. 0838 adele #204: strange balance Adele takes Ivy into the forest to harvest some bark from fallen trees so they can make mats to sit on and do some weaving. They have a short discussion about how Ivy sometimes forgets that Adele knows things, but thinks she shouldn't forget such things because it bothers her when others forget how things are different for her too. They take some wood and bark back to the home base. 0843 adele #205: crowd-pleaser Adele observes Dax's triumph as he makes a rabbit stew including the carrots they found. Everyone loves it but they're not sure about the children. Thursday doesn't seem interested until Adele realizes that his people like the greens rather than the root. They put that in the soup for Thursday and suddenly he likes it. 0845 adele #206: forward or back Adele gets her tasks done in the City and hastens to call Webster. Her joy quickly evaporates because Webster gets right down to business: he can't talk to her anymore unless they can "go forward," and to him that means she must agree to meet him in person (though he is okay with her staying hidden). 0847 adele #207: you asked for this Adele agrees to meet with Webster, but that doesn't mean he'll be allowed to see her. She won't go to a restaurant and instead prefers to sit in the dark in a park with him, with her robe on. She makes this concession and is pretty annoyed about it, but becomes even more so when she realizes Webster is going to keep pushing boundaries and she's going to have to break up with him soon. 0849 adele #208: out loud Adele has set up a lantern-lit fast food meal for Webster and she has anxious thoughts. When he arrives and casually touches her arm, she has a terribly strong reaction and can't help but look at the future regarding how he would react if she confessed her origins, wondering if she can settle once and for all whether they could be together. What she sees is scarring and hurtful and she knows she can never let him touch her again. And then she has to go on with the date pretending he didn't do any of those things in her visions, even though he would. She can't react because it wasn't out loud. 0851 adele #209: what didn't happen Adele decides Webster needing her physical presence (and wanting to escalate things) is beyond what she's willing to tolerate and calls an end to the meeting. She goes back to the hotel and sends Webster back home, with the promise that she'll call him if he wants her to. (She'll know.) She then thinks about how she wanted to stay in one place instead of going forward, and though she's sad, she's proud of herself for taking a stand. 0856 adele #210: the pioneer Adele requests Alix's help in building entrance tunnels for the portal openings she plans to create with her new knowledge about portal travel. She says she will need Alix's underwater skills to build tunnels and Ivy's help to do the lifting and remove the water from their tunnels. Alix is happy to be helpful but suspicious of Adele's wish for his help in the decision-making, too. He refuses to be the first to go through a portal and she admits it should be her. And she accidentally draws attention to Weaver's intelligence when compared with Alix, which he treats as an insult. 0858 adele #211: scarily simple Adele opens her first portal connection and thinks about her connections to these passages, and ends up going through to New York City. She's keeping a log of where the portals go and is looking forward to their group being able to travel more conveniently. 0860 adele #212: something sweet to share Adele learns a few things about how to make traveling easier if water portals are involved, and enjoys a few hours shopping and hanging out at a caf eating sweets. She relishes the idea that she can come out more often and get more treats, though she'll need a better system for getting cash if she's going to spend it more often too. She decides to buy some sweets for the crew. 0863 adele #213: minor inconvenience Adele and Alix wake up relieved to be over the worst of their sickness. Weaver comes in to check on Adele and expresses relief in their recovery too. Alix argues with Adele about why she didn't predict and avoid the sickness, and their typical reactions reassure them both that they're back to their old selves. 0870 adele #214: damage potential Tab and Thursday have hit their "wanting to help with everything" phase and Adele is trying to provide structure for it while keeping them from squabbling. Adele has a moment when Tab gets rowdy during laundry chores and she has to keep Tab away from Thursday to avoid disaster. She redirects them to positive contributions but recognizes that they aren't out of the danger zone. 0872 adele #215: get real Adele uses the portal pool to visit the city again and get calendars and seeds for Dax. She admits to herself that she wants to talk to Webster even though she's not through being mad at him. When she checks her mail she has two letters from him about him seeing a therapist and wanting her to be real with him. She writes him a very brief note and acknowledges to herself that neither of them can be real and keep their relationship. 0877 adele #216: stay small Adele and Alix go to the shops to get a small pot from a scratch-off lottery and check out some materials for upcoming building work. When Adele says she doesn't want to leave Weaver alone too long, Alix mocks him for his presumed-to-be-unwarranted fear, and Adele has to put him in his place about Weaver's reactions in light of bad experiences. Alix feels shamed and reacts bitterly as usual. 0881 adele #217: every kid Ivy, seeming a little panicked, brings Tab to Adele with her first lost tooth. Adele tries to explain that it's normal and what the process is about, and she wants Ivy to listen too, but she's clearly grossed out by the tooth loss and trying to make the best of it. She's also clearly alienated when Adele reads a story to Tab about losing teeth and Ivy realizes the experience they're describing as universal doesn't apply to her. When Tab notices a mention of the Tooth Fairy, Ivy volunteers to give Tab a prize to participate in this ritual even though they've all acknowledged that the Tooth Fairy is just a story. 0884 adele #218: maturely Tab and Thursday argue about their gifts for losing teeth and they want more information from Adele about which one of them is older. When Adele decides to tell them and reveals that Thursday is older, she also scolds him for gloating about it and wants him to act maturely. Adele thinks about their future education now that they're really starting to stabilize as a family. 0888 adele #219: the boss Alix comes to Adele to ask for her advice and sort of her permission to build some improvements onto his gazebo and add a shed. Adele likes his ideas and he's surprised to have her approval and respect. She's willing to get Ivy's help to get the materials. 0892 adele #220: friends who flirt Adele goes on a getaway mini-trip to the city and collects a letter from Webster. He seems to have settled on a surprising conclusion: neither of them can have what they want, but maybe they can be friends. She uses a hidden key to get into a vacant apartment and uses the phone to call him. They talk about friendship and admit they both like to flirt, so this might be difficult, but they're willing to give it a try. Adele knows even this is useless since it still will not end well, but she can't help wanting it. 0894 adele #221: their names Adele wraps up her conversation with Webster, saying she has to get back to her crew, and he asks her about who they are and why they get to be part of her life in person while he doesn't. She says the reason is connected to what she can't tell him about herself, but she consents to telling him a little about them (including their names), and worries that she might accidentally drop information she doesn't want to reveal if she doesn't mostly keep her crew in a separate universe from their conversations. 0899 adele #222: maybe it's nothing Alix asks Adele whether something is going on with Ivy that made her listless when it was time to build the shed. Adele, instead of really answering Alix, is critical of his choice to ask her what's wrong with Ivy instead of asking IVY what's wrong with Ivy. Alix is defensive but sees her point. Adele does wonder what Ivy's teen years will be like but doesn't appreciate that Alix is always expecting the worst from Ivy. 0905 adele #223: too much of us Adele sneaks out at night to talk to Webster in a hotel. This time she keeps running into everyday details from her life setting Webster off on questioning tangents, and feeling lost over the details of Webster's life. She wants to switch to something more timeless so they can enjoy their talk without worry, and pushes Webster to tell her a story he liked as a child instead. Keeping themselves out of their stories is the only way they seem to be able to safely connect now. 0912 adele #224: excavation Adele and Alix talk about the eventual house-building and Alix is frustrated that Adele has the big picture but not the details he wants, while Adele is frustrated that Alix wants details she doesn't have yet even though they can't act on them. She explains that the way she makes decisions based on the way her abilities work is different from the way he makes decisions "forward" with logic, while her way of understanding what to do is more like excavating. Adele privately acknowledges that she also doesn't want to get excited about things she'll be forced to be patient for, so she prefers not to know about them until it's relevant. 0915 adele #225: protecting her Adele is guiding Thursday and Tab in reading exercises and Thursday has begun to be able to sound out words. Tab, on the other hand, is shying away from participating and can't even recognize letters. While trying to coax Tab into trying, Thursday jumps onto the book and asks Adele to just read it to them, and points out that Tab can't read anyway. Adele is surprised that Thursday seems to be protecting Tab from having to read and neither of them are treating this statement he made as anything but a fact. Tab is not upset to be accused of not being able to read. Adele agrees to read to them, but wonders whether the two children need separate reading lessons. 0918 adele #226: directionless Adele talks to Ivy while she's making string bracelets and discusses her recent directionless feelings. Adele tells her her main job right now is to keep reading and learning so she'll be ready when they start building a house and a life with humans, and she reassures Ivy that the humans they will choose to bring into their world will appreciate what's unusual about their group. She also brings up her future hope to tutor a human who has similar abilities to hers. 0922 adele #227: ground rules Adele is waiting to have words with Alix when he returns to the grounds with Ivy. She urgently explains that he must ask permission before using the pool or bad things could happen, and emphasizes that in the future when pool use gets more complicated it will be important so they need to form good habits now. She also claims that taking Ivy to the city is dangerous. Alix mostly takes it well (though he gets a little sullen), but Adele is disturbed by how strongly she feels that Ivy needs to be kept out of the city. 0925 adele #228: meeting of equals Adele comes to discuss Ivy's interest in the city with Weaver. They have a "meeting of equals" debating whether Ivy's curiosity should be encouraged. Adele gets a concession from Weaver that they at least shouldn't encourage her, given that Ivy is far more vulnerable to the dangers that threaten her while she is this young. 0929 adele #229: just not sticking Adele has made plush letters to help Tab learn more about the sounds letters make. Tab immediately recognizes that this is "alphabet stuff" and doesn't really want to try, but she does have one small breakthrough where she realizes that B makes the "buh" sound no matter where in a word it is. She is still unable to find letters on the page or to reliably spell her name, though. Adele is still somewhat heartened by the exercise. 0934 adele #230: we still have something Adele sneaks off to speak to Webster again and they end up flirting. He wonders if he could spend the night with her if he wore a blindfold and promised not to look at her. She is angry both because he asked and because she wishes it could be. She explains that she has already seen he will reject her for reasons beyond her appearance, and he thinks it is unfair that she would be mad at him for something he hasn't yet done. She wonders how she can end their relationship but currently feels she can't. 0938 adele #231: simple terms Dax and Adele continue to talk in the forest in a private conversation. Adele expresses that she wants to keep Webster because she appreciates just being a person with him, not having him fulfill a purpose in a plan. But Dax leads her to understand, in simple terms, that she wants to keep what she has with him even as it's not what Webster wants, and that the relationship will continue to get more frustrating. Adele wonders why passionate love developed in her for someone like Webster and not someone like Dax, even though she values his compassion more than Webster's passion. 0941 adele #232: the grown-up Adele finds herself with a group of four--Dax, Ivy, Thursday, and Tab--descending upon her wanting an explanation of how babies are made. While implying that Dax should have been willing to field this question, she agrees to explain, and does so. And then when the kids begin asking a variety of questions, Dax is also a little overwhelmed by how to answer them and Adele feels like she's the only one willing to be a grown-up. It's frustrating to her because she's tired of having to be the answer girl even for questions others can answer. 0948 adele #233: trust Adele has a talk with Ivy about her future missions, discussing the reasons Ivy will be the public face of the group's efforts to get their house built and more in the future. Ivy seems skeptical and Adele explains why she's the perfect diplomat despite her misgivings. 0956 adele #234: own her mistakes Dax approaches Adele to ask about what she said to Ivy about her responsibility for Tab. After hearing what Dax has to say about responsibility weighing heavy on Ivy, Adele agrees that she could use more help, but that having her own responsibilities is important. 0959 adele #235: once and for all Adele has written a letter to Webster describing Dax's opinion on Adele's and Webster's mismatched happiness. She calls him after allowing him to do some thinking, and they discuss where their relationship should go once and for all. Adele's boundaries state that Webster has to be happy with never seeing her or being with her. And Webster, thinking himself equally entitled to make demands, says their relationship requires that she promise to take a road trip with him one day. She rejects this and tells him it's over and she hopes he does have a nice life without her. She wonders why she just feels empty instead of sorrowful, and thinks she will serve her family better without emotions anyway. 0960 adele #236: a clean break Adele feels blank, then regretful, then determined to move forward being as practical as she can. She turns her focus on how impractical it is to have long hair and gives herself a short haircut impulsively. She then regrets that because it might alarm her family, but she can't undo it. She hopes she is moving forward into a future where she makes objective, practical choices, and is happy to be looking the part. 0965 adele #237: time will tell Adele and Ivy are working with pebbles and Ivy gets tired of doing it. They joke around while taking a break and Ivy asks some questions about Adele's experience of having short hair. Adele wonders if she'll keep it or grow it long again. 0972 adele #238: railings Ivy comes to Adele to say she wants help finding more guidance on how to interact with her mission subjects, and Adele is not only supportive; she's surprised that Ivy would have thought she doesn't want to help her. She gives some direction to Ivy about how to focus her quest for information and Ivy comes up with an idea about how to involve herself. Adele looks forward to teaching a real prophecy student. 0974 adele #239: you have choices Adele approaches Ivy after she's feeling better and discusses their future approach together. She tells Ivy she has choices about how to approach these missions. She can "wing it," or she can talk to Adele and sort through possibilities like anyone else might. She's not alone in this, and she can always access Adele's wisdom. 0978 adele #240: yours to share Adele thinks Ivy did a great job on her mission helping a woman with her moving, but Ivy seems to feel that she cheated, or that helping the woman using her energy was not what Adele wanted her to do. Adele counters, explaining that both of them will always have access to their abilities and shouldn't have to pretend they don't when they handle problems in their lives. Ivy feels a little better but wants some coaching on how to avoid feeling weird when she talks about it to new people. 0981 adele #241: i may be enough Adele wakes up feeling like today is when she needs to process unresolved feelings about Webster. But since she doesn't have a therapist and doesn't feel any of her companions would make a good substitute, she only has herself to rely on. She takes to her journal to write out how she feels about both the past and the future regarding Webster, and acknowledges that she can feel regret for what she's lost while still being positive about the future. 0986 adele #242: in the shadow Ivy comes to Adele yet again for advice, this time about how to handle Tab being jealous of her and thinking she's the kind of person who would flaunt her abilities just to hurt Tab. Adele gives some perspectives on how it might be difficult to have Ivy as a big sister but her true nature will be clear to Tab one day. 0990 adele #243: respect the flag Tab interrupts some important work Adele and Ivy are working on. Adele is disappointed that Tab didn't remember a new rule she has established about putting out a flag outside the cave if she's doing something that requires uninterrupted attention. Tab does not recall being told this information, but she really wants Ivy to come get her a new scratching post. Ivy, pointing out that they've already been interrupted anyway, races to help Tab. It turns out she's delighted to be asked for a favor that requires her energy, and thinks Tab's willingness to make a request can be built on for the future. 0994 adele #244: not ready Ivy comes to Adele asking if she can send her on a mission to find friends who would accept her (including her abilities). Adele tells her the truth: that her immaturity would lead her to using her abilities to impress other kids, and she would connect her self worth to other kids' expectations. Ivy surprises Adele by saying she actually probably would do exactly that and accepts Adele's assessment. 0998 adele #245: under the radar Adele and Ivy go to the city to get Ivy new pants since she's growing out of her old ones. Ivy completes a conveniently organized digging job for a cash payment, and then tries to negotiate with Adele over why she can't just do stuff like that since she loves helping and wants to earn money like that. She doesn't really understand why she can't just openly use her energy for a career in the future. Adele counters to say she needs to stay "under the radar" and that revealing herself on any scale would be catastrophic. She is startled and upset but understands Adele's advice must be trusted. And they buy some pants. 1000 adele #246: mastermind Adele is laying some groundwork for the first "real" missions, and though she has some idea about the two humans who will first live in the house with them, she's a little stuck on who's going to design and build the house. Adele explores her philosophy and options on how to find this man, and after getting some strange images about weaving from a dream, she finally manages to identify the specific person--an architect named Robert--and she ponders how strange it is that when they do meet this man, a typical human will finally see her face. 1005 adele #247: all that matters Adele finds Ivy's list of "girl things" and worries about Ivy pigeonholing herself. She investigates by asking her what it's about and Ivy gets defensive, finally saying that it doesn't matter whether others have ever thought she is boyish; it matters more if SHE'S worried about it. With that, Adele realizes you can't talk a tween out of insecurity, and offers to give Ivy money to buy some accessories if she wants to after a mission. Ivy is grateful to have been heard, and Adele is grateful that Ivy told her the truth. 1009 adele #248: being in the world Ivy comes back from the mall and shares her stories (and her fun purchases!). Adele praises her and reassures her that she didn't fail any mission and may have had her best success yet; she's learned more about how to solve problems and interact with humans. Adele is very proud of Ivy. 1013 adele #249: blending in Ivy comes to Adele to ask her opinion about various things that will help her blend in and interact with regular humans. Adele resists the idea that Ivy needs to focus on such things--at least not now--and encourages her to realize that the people she'll be establishing relationships with will think her unusual qualities are good. She thinks any attempt Ivy makes to minimize her differences will just be a pale imitation of "normalcy" which also won't work out well for her. 1016 adele #250: to be seen Adele continues the discussion of how she might feel being looked at by a human. Dax feels more encouraging about it--his experience was a little alienating but friendly--while Weaver felt it was pretty terrible and doesn't want Adele to get her hopes up. Adele shares a bit of her feelings and speculates about her worries about being responsible for speed bumps going forward, but Alix interrupts and says he'd like to share his perspective on being looked at by humans too. 1024 adele #251: an unearthly color Ivy and Tab come to Adele to ask if they can change the texture and color of their hair. She comes up with some options and suggests colored hairspray. The kids are excited at the idea, but Tab is confused by why humans would allow strange colors if her own hair color would be strange in human society. She comes to the conclusion that her hair color, like Adele's, makes her special, while Ivy's hair color is "boring." Adele tries to put that idea to sleep, though she has some thoughts about it. 1028 adele #252: misfired Weaver comes to Adele for advice, specifying that it's not just venting--he would have come to Dax for that. Adele wishes others came to her for companionship more than advice. Weaver asks Adele how to handle his misunderstanding with Ivy over whether Tab should be in "their" tree, and Adele advises him that coming to Ivy with his confusion is the only thing that will work; she can't give him any special insight. 1030 adele #253: small talk Adele approaches Alix and Dax to ask them for help thinking up low-stakes missions for Ivy to practice engaging with strangers. She gets upset that they both seem initially inclined to just leave it to her, but Dax quickly coaxes Alix into helping when Adele expresses her annoyance. Alix borrows an idea from his family's business where they would let a man gather small donations and would drop by every so often to pick them up. Adele decides to swipe the idea. 1037 adele #254: personal matters Adele helps Ivy with a bellyache she got from weird food during her errands, and Alix mistakes her hot water bottle as a sign that she might have gotten her period. He asks Adele about it because he's afraid to ask Ivy directly under the assumption that she'll be "hormonal" and not appreciate the question, and he confesses to Adele that he fears how emotional fluctuations might affect someone like Ivy during puberty. Adele finds his phrasing and assumptions misogynistic and asks him to stop treating women and girls like their periods make them irrational, though she does finally tell him that Ivy has not started her period and she isn't sure she ever will. Adele does not know how maturity will work for Ivy and sees nothing concrete that will be happening in the near future.
