Wow! I didn't realize this story was set so long ago, when there was photographic film and developers. 80s? Early 90s?

Development for photographs still exists in mainstream places, but yes, the fact that there was no real alternative hints at the timeline. Other hints of this include the size of video cameras, the corded phones, and the lack of smartphones and Internet in the story. We're not quite into 1990 yet.

Oh, this is painful to look back on. It's hard to reconcile the care, insight, and openness on display in this and Webster's other letters with the dead certainty that he would be repelled by Adele's true self. But that just shows the quality of your character writing, because people are always more complicated than we might want to admit.
