Oh, so Alix‘ water breathing skill was a years-long set-up!

I don't think of it like that--the story does what it does because of the strengths and limitations of its characters. I didn't invent Alix and everything everyone's been through with him because I need a character who can build underwater. I have a story where that is possible because he's in it, and his existence isn't a long game played so this one rather minor problem could be solved. (For that matter I could have just made portals openable not in water, but sometimes writing it feels more like I figured out existing laws instead of inventing them, even though I know that's not true.)

So THIS is Alix's special purpose in the series! To breathe underwater indefinitely to travel through random dimensional wormholes. He'll be better at it than everyone else! I love Destiny. He'll build plastic tubes in lakes and oceans so the other major characters can go take down the empire of... whoever took over Adele's world.

Fanfic being written right here in the comments, looks like! (For the record, Adele's world was colonized by Shio in ancient times and nobody in modern times is at war with them.)
