When Pope John Paul II was writing his historic papers on marriage (marketed as "Theology of the Body"), a common criticism was, "How can he pretend to know how marriage is supposed to work when he's never been married?" Sometimes being an outsider brings insight and perspective that is hard to get when you are in the thick of it, "unable to see the forest for the trees."
