meri lin #60: the concept of losing herFred hatches his plan for teaching Amanda which window is theirs just in case she ever escapes, but he has a disturbing revelation about how easy it would be for his daughter to escape if she's taken outside. He and Meri Lin decide to Amanda-proof their apartment.
adele #41: entertainment purposes onlyAdele learns, through television, that humans do have a system in place to read the future, and it is called the Tarot. But upon further investigation, she finds that Tarot is more a game "for entertainment" than a trusted truth-searching method for talented individuals. Nevertheless, she vows to learn it so she might communicate with this dimension's wannabe oracles.
meri lin #61: the best balanceMeri Lin continues her quest to improve her baby's dexterity, though it's pretty obvious Amanda is learning to depend on her powers for everything. But Meri Lin realizes she's proud of Amanda when she uses her ability well (like when she helps with little chores), so she's not really sure what attitude toward her daughter's powers she should aim to instill--or emulate herself.
dax #10: guilt tripDax's companions deny him the opportunity to come into a convenience store with them because he isn't human. Then he gets guilt-tripped into cooperating with a scheme to collect money from letting a curious store worker look at him like an exhibit.
meri lin #62: in my armsMeri Lin and Fred share some togetherness time, and then Meri Lin ruminates over some thoughts about her baby and holds her while she sleeps. She misses how heavy her baby used to be before she began flying all the time.
adele #42: girl stuffAdele decides to go to the store for some supplies and then to a New Age store to learn about Tarot cards. In both places she ponders the nature of female people and their tendency to have certain things in common regardless of their origin.
meri lin #63: being intimateMeri Lin and Fred spend more quality time together, and she ponders how amazing it is that Fred always seems to be able to anticipate her needs.
weaver #11: a piece of skyWeaver enjoys his first taste of freedom, philosophizes a bit about flying, and begins to identify what qualities he will require in the place he chooses for a territory of his own.
meri lin #64: don't encourage herMeri Lin has to lie to her sister about visiting again, and as she watches Fred teaching Amanda a little roughhousing, she becomes alarmed. Meri Lin concludes that a child with no limits should not be encouraged to test them.
adele #43: misconceptionAdele has an appointment with a Tarot reader, only to be disappointed to find that this supposed psychic is little more than a counselor with no special powers. Adele gives the fortune-teller a rather uncharacteristic tongue-lashing, but leaves feeling ashamed and doubtful.
meri lin #65: before she flies awayAmanda rips the posterboard off the window and ends up outside in an adjacent window's flower box. Meri Lin holds herself together long enough to pull the baby back inside.
dax #11: scaryDax decides to take meeting new people into his own hands against the hippies' advice, and only ends up scaring some passersby. Dax and the lead hippie discuss the situation.
meri lin #66: close to meAs an after-effect of her scare with the baby's escape, Meri Lin clings to Amanda, ultimately angering her. Amanda expresses her desire to be alone by pushing her mother around and hiding under the couch.
adele #44: on my levelIn the continuing search for a prophet on her level, Adele encounters an older man who suggests that she won't find them through mainstream channels. Adele becomes frustrated with the idea that even open-minded humans seem to think what she's looking for doesn't exist . . . and thinking about it leads Adele to remember that her own teacher came from this world, and therefore human prophets do exist.
meri lin #67: giving inWhen Fred comes home he gets upset at the baby and demands she put the couch back, but she has her own ways of doing things, and Meri Lin realizes there's a point at which she and Fred will have to give in to what their baby wants if they don't want to get hurt.
weaver #12: others like meWeaver continues his search for a territory and reflects on what he wants in a companion.
meri lin #68: christmas picturesDue to lack of funds, Meri Lin and Fred can only afford to send a family photo to their friends for Christmas. After failing to get the baby to help them remotely push the button, Fred's ingenuity saves the day. Includes a color drawing of the family.
adele #45: full of knowledgeAdele decides to leave her hotel and ends up happily gathering knowledge about the human world in a library.
meri lin #69: another wild-child dayFred helps Meri Lin take care of Amanda during the holiday break, and she takes note of the relatively carefree way her partner handles weird issues, wondering if she ought to try to emulate him.
dax #12: stolen trustDax becomes desperately lonely always being left out, but when he seeks to join his companions' action he witnesses two different incidents of stealing. He decides to leave based on not wanting to keep company with such people, and finds out one of the hippies' names. He promises her that he will return in one month to see if either of them have changed.
meri lin #70: copying mommyMeri Lin notices that Amanda is trying to copy her motions during household chores, so she attempts to use this situation as a dexterity lesson. She finds Amanda really doesn't have much control over her hands at all, and she's not surprised.
adele #46: past, present and futureAdele gets comfortable with her surroundings (and the library patrons get more comfortable with her) as she studies human history. However, when she decides to start studying the present, she realizes that knowing the fates of others may mean she has a responsibility to help them, and she wonders what her purpose is.
meri lin #71: no way outLissa Lee puts in her request to stay with the Fisher-Ling family during summer vacation, and Meri Lin and Fred don't see any way they can refuse her. They decide that if they end up having to tell Lissa Lee about Amanda's secret, they'll just have to face it.
weaver #13: symbolWeaver combats boredom by reading a discarded magazine, and ponders the meaning and intended use of his sword.
meri lin #72: when she's olderMeri Lin has a dream about Amanda's future. The images she dreams repeatedly contradict themselves, ultimately suggesting that Amanda survives to be a teenager but ends up having her own telekinetic baby, whom Meri Lin has to baby-sit. She awakens confused and overwhelmed.
adele #47: from aboveAdele decides to meditate on the large problem of how to involve herself in helping others whose predicaments are revealed to her through the newspapers. She discusses the role of meditation--superconscious--and sleep--subconscious--in determining the correct course of action.
meri lin #73: she understandsMeri Lin watches Amanda play pretend with her doll. She's surprised to see Amanda putting herself in the mother role and reprimanding the doll to use her hands when she eats, which tells Meri Lin that Amanda actually understands the difference.
dax #13: colored lightsDax seeks shelter in what turns out to be a nightclub, and observes humans and their colored lights and dancing. He makes contact with a few clubgoers, some of whom are under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.
meri lin #74: her own wayAmanda demonstrates her skill at crayon scribbling, and then when the phone rings she surprises everyone--including the person on the other end--by answering it and babbling some cute phrases into the receiver before hanging up again. Meri Lin is pleased that her baby is learning to use household objects, but she acknowledges that Amanda will always do it her own way.
adele #48: shatter effectAfter awakening, Adele searches for guidance in the remnants of her dreams and discovers she remembers a bit about how to use her stones for divination. But when she attempts to use them to divine a course of action on helping solve a crime, she is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information.
meri lin #75: sentimentalA storm startles Amanda into breaking her window again, and while Meri Lin is comforting her, suddenly Amanda puts her whole weight in her mother's arms. Touched by the baby's apparent desire for protection, she calls Fred in to share, and he too is emotionally affected.
weaver #14: the edge of the earthDiscontent, Weaver searches for a territory that feels like home for him. Eventually he comes to a forest near the beach which he is strangely drawn to. He decides he will give it a chance and see if it proves itself to him as a worthy home.
meri lin #76: it workedMeri Lin's continued attempts to stop Amanda from flying and levitating things finally starts to work when Amanda responds positively to a verbal request and seems concerned about whether she's pleasing her mother. Meri Lin considers this a breakthrough.
adele #49: someone like meAfter Adele moves to a different library and reads more fairy tales and mythology, she ponders how strange it is that humans have so many stories that involve prophecy. Obviously they wish to grasp the future, so why is it that if she were to reveal her abilities, she'd still get no acceptance?
meri lin #77: another quirkMeri Lin screws up the courage to take Amanda in for immunizations and a checkup again, during which she finds out something unusual about Amanda's teeth.
dax #14: new attitudeIntrigued by the idea that he may be able to see eye to eye with these humans if he samples the clubgoers' hallucinogenic drugs, Dax agrees to try a hit of acid.
meri lin #78: still hereFred finds a displaced window screen on his way into the building, and worries that Amanda might have flown out a window again until he finds the baby (and Meri Lin) safe and sound. However, upon further investigation, they find the baby has dirt on her legs, which shows she was outside in the flowerbed again. Meri Lin finds it comforting that the baby went out but came back.
adele #50: my own termsAdele ponders how she's getting sick of having to skulk around to take care of her personal needs, noting that she's losing weight because it's easier not to eat than to interact with humans as often. After listening to some classical music at night in the library, she heartily wishes she were in a position to establish herself and give what she has to offer instead of just sampling what the human world has to offer while in hiding.
meri lin #79: good newsWhen Fred comes home with the good news that he's getting promoted (with a raise!), Meri Lin is happy to share her own good news as well: She hasn't seen Amanda levitating anything or flying for three days, so maybe there's hope that they won't have to reveal their secret to Lissa Lee. . . . (Unfortunately, Amanda immediately spoils her record by flying behind Meri Lin's back. They decide they're just going to have to bite the bullet and let Meri Lin's sister in on the classified info.)
weaver #15: like the moonWeaver finds that a pond in the area he's been living in shines with a rather unearthly light. After deciding this shining lake is the closest thing to the moon on Earth, he decides he's found his new home.
meri lin #80: open windowThis comic with no words pictures Meri Lin discovering Amanda's crib empty and her window open. She scurries around looking for her daughter, panicked, and calls Fred. She keeps returning to the open window. The last frame pictures Fred standing there with her.
adele #51: human contactAdele is skimming the crime section of the newspaper in a café when a young man seeking human contact drops in on her for a conversation. Adele thinks about how she should relate to human society despite being outside of it.
ivy #1: bigNow taking over to narrate her own comics, Baby Amanda begins being named in the comic as narrator Ivy, and in her first adventure she goes on her first lengthy outdoor flight. Ivy delights in her freedom to keep moving up without a ceiling, but when she gets high enough the winds make her feel disoriented, and she scrambles to fly back to the ground so the "big" doesn't get her. The reasoning behind identifying Amanda as Ivy is explained in an attached document.
meri lin #81: out thereHalfway through a breakdown that seems natural after your child goes missing, Meri Lin is surprised to realize she has a strength she didn't previously recognize. If Fred can't take care of her because he's also freaking out, she decides she has to be the strong one, and tries to separate herself from her emotions so she can focus logically on what to do next in order to find the baby. Thinking of her child miles away flying out amongst strangers is almost enough to return her to her breakdown, though. . . .
dax #15: ghostsDax wakes up under the streets of the city after apparently tripping on acid, but he doesn't remember the experience and seems to have garbled some of his older memories. But as he meditates, he realizes he has a few memories he never had before, and he decides that he will not allow his wish to trust humans to destroy his memories or his values again.
ivy #2: wetIvy takes her clothes and diaper off like she always did at home, and after some distress regarding what to do about being "stinky," she finds a fountain and takes a bath in it. A patrolman comes upon her and hopes to help her, but Ivy hears his voice and thinks it's her father. When he sees her flying, his expression of fear frightens her right back, and she flies away again.
meri lin #82: switching rolesMeri Lin reports her missing baby to the local authorities, who take a description and photo for her "alert." Meri Lin then has to go give some moral support to Fred, who's a wreck. For once, she's the strong one.
adele #52: a step backwardsAfter leaving the coffeehouse where she had "human contact," Adele tries to read the paper and solve mysteries, but she's too distracted by her own thoughts. She ponders the past and tries to dig up its relics, and philosophizes about the effects of her past on her present.
ivy #3: windowsIvy discovers windows occasionally contain people, and amuses herself looking at them until she decides to pursue food. After being dissatisfied with a stolen bite of muffin, she spots a refrigerator in someone's house and lets herself in. The issue ends as she's deciding to go check out some voices.
meri lin #83: temporaryUnsure of what the next step is, Fred decides to go out to look for Amanda (taking a reference photo to show neighbors), while Meri Lin thinks about how no one can really prepare a person on how to deal with your child going missing. As long as she keeps telling herself that Amanda will be found, she feels that she will hold herself together.
dax #16: second choiceDax ventures aboveground once night falls, finds a dumpster with some edible fast food cast-offs in it, and takes a drink from a squirting fire hydrant. He pursues entertainment by following the sound of a radio, wishing for conversation but settling for his second choice.
ivy #4: pleaseHaving ventured into a random apartment's kitchen, Ivy encounters its residents, in front of whom she feels compelled to "behave" like she normally did at home when it was food time. The older couple inside seems sympathetic--especially when she has an accident on the floor and cries--but they quickly discover her secret upon picking her up because she seems suspiciously light. The couple now thinks they've found some kind of fairy, but Ivy doesn't understand their language and tries to behave in a way that she thinks will make them feed her and take care of her.
meri lin #84: just a windowFlies are getting in the apartment, so Meri Lin and Fred decide to close the window even though it makes them sad to do it. Amanda can get back in, after all. Meri Lin calls her sister to tell her the baby's missing, and decides to make her own missing child poster for her daughter.
weaver #16: this is enoughWeaver follows a bat to its home and is comforted by its similarity to him, and he reflects on his happiness about his home. The only thing he feels he is missing is someone to discuss Nature with, but he is sure that just Nature is enough for him if having a conversation partner would mean risking being captured again.
ivy #5: the best placeLittle Ivy gets the two things she wanted--food and a nap--as the couple who unwittingly became her guardians take stock of her weirdness and try to figure out how to deal with her. Marty is suspicious and frightened, and Nora is confused but very sympathetic because she is a baby. Ivy just wants them to shut up and let her sleep.
meri lin #85: should'veMeri Lin and Fred kick around ideas about what they could have and should have done to avoid their daughter's escape. They end up turning on each other in frustration, briefly blaming each other before reconciling.
dax #17: talking backDax spends the night in a crawlspace under a store and listens to the radio. In the morning he's awoken by a little girl who thinks he might be a monster and wants to give him a snack.
ivy #6: hot stuffIvy wakes up while her observers are still sleeping, and proceeds to try to find breakfast for herself. She gets curious about a coffeepot and tries to play with it, but it's very hot and startles her into dropping it. Marty comes in and starts talking to her like she understands him, asking her to leave him and his wife alone, and she gets angry at the lack of sympathy and pushes him down before retreating out the window.
meri lin #86: don't worryMeri Lin and Fred get the disturbing news that their daughter's clothes were found far away in the Bronx, and ponder how it's almost funny how that means something completely different to the cops than it does to them. Meri Lin is sickened by the thought that her baby might be somewhere far away needing her, and is offended that the police carelessly said the words "don't worry."
dax #18: dark placesThe little girl under whose father's store Dax is hiding decides to bring Dax some basically edible food, believing he is a monster but undisturbed by it. He consumes it and wonders what he can give her in return.
ivy #7: too littleIvy flies around in search of a place to rest and have fun, and she discovers a playground, where she is able to ride the merry-go-round with other kids . . . until they make her sad by all running to their parents when playtime is over. A lone child approaches her and seems friendly, and after the girl offers her cookies and takes turns with her pushing the merry-go-round, Ivy starts to trust her: This is the first appearance of Melanie.
meri lin #87: my tragedyMeri Lin's sister Lissa Lee arrives. Though Lissa Lee wants to be strong for her sister, she seems to be a bit overwhelmed by the sadness when she arrives, and Meri Lin seeks to protect her sister from "her tragedy" because she automatically defaults to "Mommy Mode." Meri Lin congratulates herself on how well she's holding up even though the worst imaginable thing has happened to her.
adele #53: divingAfter being inspired by a fairy tale book, Adele tries a mirror, then water, as a divination tool. She compares and contrasts what different types of divination are for, and then uses the water to gaze at her purpose.
ivy #8: happy yellingIvy's new friend Melanie pushes her on the swings, but when the older girl imitates flying by swinging lying on her belly in the swing, she can't hold her excitement down and pulls a "me too." Melanie is understandably shocked by seeing a flying baby, but unlike all the other strangers Ivy has met so far, Melanie appears to want to share the experience instead of running away from it. She gets Ivy to float her into the air, and Ivy is delighted to have a friend who likes flying even though she is quite loud about it.
meri lin #88: back to workNow that Lissa Lee is in town (and has taken over the apartment), Fred feels comfortable telling Meri Lin he thinks it'd be a good idea for him to go back to work. She agrees that he can if he wants, and chooses to use her time constructively by putting up missing child posters.
dax #19: lonelinessDax listens to the little girl who gave him food last time pretend to read a book to him, and that night he gets sick from food he ate out of a dumpster. He decides he wants to somehow return to hunting his own food so he will know he can trust it, and determines that when the hippies return, he will ask them to take him back to where they found him. He's disappointed that there's no foreseeable future for him that doesn't involve loneliness.
ivy #9: big sisterIvy's new friend Melanie doesn't much like flying high. She distracts Ivy and angers her by badgering her about the way she says her L's, and soon ends up freaking out when Ivy decides to do whatever she wants. But Ivy doesn't like when Melanie gets scared, so she takes her to the ground and gives her the cookies. Unfortunately, Melanie ended up getting so scared that she wet her pants, so the two decide to embark upon a quest for new pants (with Melanie promising to teach Ivy how to "nick stuff").
meri lin #89: real lifeWhile grocery shopping, Meri Lin finally lets the thought enter her mind that there's a chance they WON'T find their daughter, and the heavy thought of returning to life the way it used to be before Amanda was born is too much for her. She has a breakdown in the store and is assisted by other shoppers.
dax #20: homeThe hippies return, keeping their promise to meet Dax. They say they're going home, and agree to drop him off at the place where they found him. Then they drive away and he's on his own.
weaver #17: giving thanksIn this historic issue, Weaver sees what he thinks at first is an invader . . . but it turns out to be Dax. Curious, he observes the stranger hunting, is impressed at his reflexes, and then is bowled over by the display of Dax's praying over his kill. Weaver finds this familiar and wishes to give thanks too, and reveals himself. The two exchange their first words, and Weaver is--while still unsure--deliriously excited at the prospect of possibly having someone to talk to who has a lot in common with him.
ivy #10: big girl pantsWhile lifting a pair of pants for herself, Melanie tries to teach Ivy how to get away with stealing stuff from stores and ends up getting caught herself. Ivy figures out that her friend wants to escape and helps her, and Melanie is impressed and pleased with this naïve but powerful baby.
meri lin #90: survivalMeri Lin gets delivered back to her apartment after her breakdown, where her sister receives her. Meri Lin realizes that she has hit rock bottom and that there is nowhere left to go but up . . . and though she considers whether this makes her a bad person, she concludes that there's nothing wrong with wanting to live despite feeling like she's dying. She resolves to make each day brighter than the last even as she grieves.
dax #21: in commonAfter running into Weaver shortly after a successful hunt, Dax gets to talk to the strange little blue guy and they discover they both have no memories before crawling out of a lake, and that they both have had bad experiences with humans. Even though they're very physically different, they seem to have a lot in common, and Dax offers to share his meal with Weaver as part of an attempt to become allies. He also discovers that Weaver has a sense of humor.
ivy #11: throwed awayIvy and Melanie are just having fun on the playground again when Melanie's sister's friend arrives and calls her away from playtime. Melanie doesn't seem to realize why Ivy isn't fine with being left behind, and tells her she should just go find a tree since fairies live outside. Ivy doesn't know what to do about being abandoned like this and sits down to cry instead of taking any action.
meri lin #91: somedayLissa Lee goes back to school, so Meri Lin sees her off. She wanders around pondering big stuff for a while, and when she comes home Fred is drunk and mourning over their lost baby.
adele #54: playing godIn hopes of learning to use her clairvoyant abilities in realistic contexts, Adele makes a bold move and sends four letters that change the fates of the people involved in four unrelated crimes. She explores the ramifications of each and wonders at the end whether she is cut out for something so emotionally scarring as playing God with people's lives.
weaver #18: brotherDax and Weaver share a fruit and meat meal for the first time, and discuss what they remember about traditions and beliefs. It turns out they both have a vague belief in a goddess represented by the moon, and after Dax refers to this presence as "Mother," the two decide that they must symbolically be brothers.
ivy #12: not fairIvy's crying attracts a homeless woman who takes her to the shelter to eat some rice. She gets a lot of attention from the other homeless ladies and gets so irritated (when one of them is interested in the novelty her ears present) that she pushes her off the cot, and the ladies are suddenly scared of her and leave her alone. She bursts into tears and won't stop crying until one of the shelter managers demands that someone watch the child, and another homeless lady who claims to be good with kids comes forward to give Ivy a cookie. Ivy has learned that not everyone who gives her food is nice, so she remains wary.
dax #22: home baseWeaver shows Dax around the area, finally ending up showing him a cave where he invites Dax to sleep. Dax ponders that he and Weaver have some differences, and hopes that in comparing notes they don't end up disappointing each other.
ivy #13: happy and sadAfter getting cleaned up and put to bed by the nice homeless woman, Ivy has weird dreams in which her mother and father appear, and also her mother blends into Melanie who throws her away again. She wakes up trying to catch her and freaks out her unsuspecting guardian by flying, but the woman recovers quickly and invites Ivy back to cuddle with her. Ivy's emotions are too complicated for her to make sense of at that point, and she smiles and cries at the same time.
meri lin #92: breaking the cycleMeri Lin gets sick of how she keeps cycling between momentary forgetting of her daughter's absence and painfully remembering it. She decides to break the cycle by going back to school, hoping to change her thinking patterns and survive as a person beyond being the mother of a missing child.
ivy #14: the handsThe woman who is watching Ivy gets her ready to leave the shelter, after which they venture forth. Ivy thinks about Melanie (calling her "Mennie") while the caretaker wonders aloud what she's going to do with Ivy. But then she spots the playground where she played the day before and flies off to play, coaxing the homeless woman to come push her on the swing. Soon enough Melanie actually does appear--Ivy is overjoyed!--and the woman introduces herself as Theresa while trying to find out more about Ivy from Melanie.
