LIST OF COMICS 301-400

weaver #36: by your choiceAlix returns from his trek and is greeted by an amiable Weaver, who's especially excited about the gifts Alix brings. But then Weaver wants to know where Alix gets his money, and when he reveals that he has a bank account in his name that's frequently fed by his parents, Weaver gives Alix a hard time while jokingly pointing out how privileged he is. Predictably, Alix doesn't get it.
ivy #66: make this rightIvy is upset by Melanie's sudden retreat, so Theresa tries to get Melanie to come back and make peace with the baby. Melanie is not very sympathetic and tries to explain--rather hysterically--that the baby's actions made her fear for her life. Theresa counters by saying that all babies are selfish and she can't help how she is, but that Melanie can make this a teachable moment . . . and that she shouldn't abandon the poor child now or she will probably make her feel like she can't be loved. After Melanie gives in, they have an uncomfortable reunion, but Ivy still senses that something is wrong between them.
dax #40: respectableWhile taking Alix on a hunting trip, Dax discusses whether using tools makes Alix "unnatural." Dax sees no ethical issue with using tools, since the intellect that allows Alix to create such things is just as natural as the animal instincts he lacks. Alix appreciates Dax's philosophy and offhandedly complains that Weaver should be more like him, which leads into Dax's advice for Alix on how to get Weaver's respect . . . which is basically, stop trying.
ivy #67: make some noiseAfter encouraging Melanie to pour the tea, Ivy is met with a look of fear from her friend, which confuses her. She doesn't know why Melanie is scared of her and suddenly she is exhausted from dealing with so much stress, and she falls asleep in Theresa's lap. Theresa and Melanie have a discussion about why Melanie is so scared and what she might be able to do to protect herself against Ivy, but it's clear Theresa really wants Melanie to continue taking care of her until she herself can do so, and she's committed to getting her children back first. Melanie feels a little better about the situation after realizing she may have a weapon: Ivy doesn't like loud noises, so it might help in sticky situations to scream.
adele #62: the foreigner i amFinally ready to move onto the next phase of her life, Adele buys a train ticket and boards the train, on her way to the East Coast to find her destiny. She knows little about it, but she knows she is off to the place where she will eventually meet and teach her student, and she anticipates meeting the other people she knows mark the place. She's also anxious, though, and wonders what it will be like to interact with other people after so long of just being a stranger in a strange land.
ivy #68: something's not rightThings are basically back to normal between Melanie and Ivy--though Melanie still seems a little more bothered than usual by displays of Ivy's power. She begins to tell stories of their adventures to Theresa in handwritten letters. While Melanie is reading a book to the baby, a woman descending the stairs interrupts and asks them if they're living up there after she notices there's a tent anchored on the roof. Melanie basically tells the lady to buzz off, but the woman implies that the business owner won't approve of their presence there. Melanie doesn't seem concerned whatsoever.
weaver #37: do you hear what i hear?By this point Weaver's pretty much accepted Alix, even though he still treats him like an annoying little brother. But then one day Alix hears the voice in the forest and wants to know what it is, which makes Weaver edgy because he and Dax have fought over the meaning of that voice and he doesn't want Alix to hear about their beliefs. After Alix isn't satisfied with Weaver's answers, he goes off to try to hunt down the mysterious voice himself, and Weaver's irritated that Alix can't just mind his business.
ivy #69: i was goodOne day while Ivy is alone, two men come and check out the roof, obviously having been tipped off by whatever the woman from the last issue reported. They're surprised to see so much stuff on the roof, but they don't believe a child of Ivy's age could be responsible for any of it, so they figure they'll get her to safety and investigate further. One goes to bring the car around while the other hops onto the roof to get Ivy. But though she's amiable, he notices immediately that she isn't very heavy, and discovers that she "kind of floats" when he tests how she handles a short drop to the ground. She doesn't know what to make of it and neither does he, but they descend the stairs and the guy puts her in a car, giving up on explaining to his partner when he's treated dismissively. Enclosed in the car, Ivy begins to panic because of the small space.
weaver #38: like you already knewAlix comes rushing out of the forest and Weaver is annoyed to hear that he's had an encounter with the mysterious invisible singing woman. Weaver doesn't want to talk about her because he's afraid that because of Dax's opinion on what the voice is, the conversation will lead to discussion of their spiritual beliefs and he doesn't want Alix in on those. Alix keeps asking questions about Weaver's experiences with the invisible woman, and he gives Alix a little information before shooing him away with a gross threat. Alix leaves in a huff and Weaver is satisfied.
ivy #70: who else?As one of the men waits for the other to return with a carseat, Ivy feels stifled and scared by the small space of the car and manages to concentrate until she breaks the window in a panic. She flies out and seeks comfort in the arms of the man standing nearby, but instead of providing it, the guy flips out at the flying baby and begins to try desperately to get her off of him. She's startled and wounded by this treatment, realizing this man wants to hurt her when she needed comfort, and so she pushes him down and flies away, finding herself wondering who else might look nice but actually be mean.
meri lin #101: after a lossNow that Meri Lin's pregnancy has passed the first trimester, the couple has begun to tell people they're going to have a baby. Fred's parents ask if they are having a baby shower "this time," which triggers Meri Lin to start floundering in dark emotions because she hates being reminded that her baby should have an older sister around. Fred comforts her and says all the right things, and Meri Lin is grateful for a partner who doesn't trivialize her emotions.
ivy #71: just somethingThe only place Ivy can think of where she might not have to face an unknown mean person is the roof, where she hopes she'll see Melanie again soon. Since no one's there, she settles into her bed to sleep, and Melanie wakes her up because of impending rain. She helps her get into a department store that sells beds, where she spends the night, but the poor baby is confused and exhausted and unwilling to see to her own needs. In the morning she strips her soiled clothes off and leaves in a blanket, only to find Melanie standing on their rooftop with all their stuff mysteriously gone. Melanie promises Ivy that they will get more stuff and a new home, but Ivy is satisfied with the warm embrace she gets.
adele #63: terrible attentionAdele gets off the train with relief, tired of people staring at her in her robe. She felt very uncomfortable with their attention and doesn't know how she'll deal with meeting a human (even a friendly one) if she felt like this even when she was concealed. She makes her way out to the forest and has a dream that gives her a sign: soon she will see a strange sight in the sky, and then she will know more about where to go and when.
ivy #72: kind of the bossIn a letter to Theresa, Melanie explains that she's hoping to find an inside place to set Ivy up with living space, but for now she's moved her to her friend Tonya's apartment building roof. All she's got to keep Ivy comfortable in the cold is blankets, and though Ivy herself doesn't seem to mind the cold, Tonya believes it is too cold for a baby to live outdoors. She expresses concern about frostbite and accuses Melanie of not taking very good care of the baby, at which point Melanie decides to leave Ivy with Tonya and see how good a job SHE does taking care of a baby with superpowers.
dax #41: to grow fromAlix returns from picking nuts with Weaver to ask Dax about the voice in the forest. Surprised that Alix heard it, Dax begins to admit to himself that the voice must not be divine if Alix can hear it, and tries to find out how open Alix is to Mother-based Earth spirituality without giving away too much. He soon discovers Alix is not personally interested, but that he is basically respectful. At the end of the conversation Alix knows that Dax worships a Mother Earth, and he disagrees with Dax's practice of sacrificing some of his hunt to Her.
ivy #73: shhhStuck with figuring out somewhere to put the baby for the night, Tonya sneaks Ivy into her family's apartment and hides her in her own bedroom, but Ivy isn't quiet enough and starts howling when Tonya wants her to leave her clothes on. Her mother and sister notice the noise and demand to know its source, and though she hides Ivy in the closet, that lasts about half a second and her mother demands the truth. After finding out that her daughter was entrusted with the care of a baby who was on their roof for no clear reason, she makes clear her intentions to call the police.
weaver #39: awayWeaver comes back to camp from nut-picking only to overhear Dax talking to Alix about their religious beliefs, which highly offends and hurts him because he had thought he and Dax had agreed not to talk to Alix about the Mother. Before they see him, Weaver wings his way out of the general area and ponders why he's so hurt and what Dax could be intending to do by letting Alix in on their beliefs. Before long Weaver has to sleep and ends up doing so far from home in a pear tree.
ivy #74: just pick her upTonya insists that her mother shouldn't call the police because the baby isn't an ordinary kid, and she claims the baby has magic. With that she makes her mother hold Ivy so she can feel how light she is, at which point Tonya's sister Tara also wants to hold her. She tosses her experimentally and notices that she stays in the air too long before scurrying down to the ground. The family is convinced that there's something odd about the baby, but they don't know how to react as Tonya requests again that they just take care of her instead of calling the cops.
dax #42: unless he wants to be seenDax realizes it's been a long time since they've seen Weaver, and Alix is unable to properly estimate how long he's been missing, so Dax gets worried and insists on combing the area to look for him. Coming up empty, Dax dissolves more into worry while Alix tries a bit too flippantly to reassure Dax and avoid getting blamed. Dax meditates on the situation, hoping the Mother will lead him to a revelation about Weaver's whereabouts.
ivy #75: believing in unicornsTasked with giving Ivy a bath, Tonya's mother seems stunned by the "magical" toddler and confusedly quizzes her about what she is, hoping to make some sense out of the bizarre situation. She quickly catches on from watching Ivy play that this is just a kid--albeit a kid with weird powers--and she becomes emotional, to which Ivy responds with a wet hug (even though she has no idea why this woman is crying). When her daughters come in and ask what's wrong, Tonya's mother explains that she's having some trouble processing the impossible becoming possible again. But this seems to be a joyful revelation for her, and she proceeds to give Ivy a proper bath.
weaver #40: a little waveWeaver awakens, flies around a bit while mulling over his anger, and decides he basically forgives Dax for a possible transgression because the Mother isn't his to share or not. But he figures he'd better have an adventure while he's away, and explores to find interesting goodies (including a pair of binoculars and some gum). He does get a little creeped out by a figure way down on the ground who waves at him--twice--but eventually he ends up finding a treehouse and prepares to go in.
ivy #76: safeAfter feeding her and putting her to bed, Tonya's family has made poor little stressed-out Ivy feel very good. She feels safe for the first time in a long time. That changes when Tonya's dad comes home and interrupts her nap to get a look at her and insist that the police should be called.
weaver #41: footstepsWeaver explores the treehouse and finds beer and other treasures, including catalogs featuring underwear models (some of which he steals). He then finds a recording device in a gazebo before deciding he has too much stuff to carry and flying into the forest. Flying with all that weight tires him out, and he starts to realize the beer he drank affected him. While he's resting, he's interrupted by a mysterious woman in a black robe--the same person who waved to him while he was flying--who speaks to him even though she shouldn't be able to see him in his hiding place and tells him he should return the recording device and why. Weaver is mystified as to why this girl in the forest knows so much about his new possessions and why she runs off into the forest after speaking to him, but he's sure got a wild story to tell his pals now.
ivy #77: every new grown-upTonya's father's hysterical protests against Ivy's presence upset the baby and scare her enough to try to hide under the bed (except that she can't fit under the bed and has to pick it up to hide behind it propped against the wall). He issues an ultimatum: Tonya's mother has to get rid of this supposedly supernatural creature within an hour "or else," and then he leaves to wait in a coffeehouse. Ivy is too confused, tired, and frightened to come out from behind the bed.
dax #43: imagining the worstWhile worrying about Weaver's disappearance, Dax finds Alix's attitude frustrating and is relieved when Alix falls asleep. Dax prays for Weaver to come back, and in the morning when they still haven't found him he begins to despair. But soon enough Weaver does return and Dax and Alix shower him with attention and welcomes. However, when Weaver avoids the question of why he made them worry and distracts them by showing off a bunch of new junk items he grabbed on his adventure, Dax knows there's more to the story.
ivy #78: his boundariesLeft to sort out what they should do with the baby, Tonya's family discusses whether they should put up with Tonya's dad's demands. Her mother doesn't think it's an option to defy him and thinks he has a right to his boundaries, especially since she can't prove the baby is safe to be around. The sisters bicker about their dads until Tonya's mom gets upset with Tara and sends her to her room, after which she discusses her plan to put Ivy in a hotel where her friend works as long as Melanie can get her in the morning. They prepare to take the baby out, and Ivy thinks about how she's tired of being moved around.
weaver #42: not just oursWeaver shares his toys and distracts his companions until bedtime, but then when he's pondering his issues alone on top of the cave, Dax comes out to have a talk with him. Weaver's insecurities about Dax's sharing their beliefs with Alix come pouring out, and Dax tries to clarify his perspective a little better: he doesn't intend to teach Alix, but he won't withhold knowledge if it's asked of him. Weaver realizes that their way can't be taught anyway and that Alix will acquire the knowledge himself if he's meant to have it, and contents himself with pondering his meeting with the mysterious woman as he takes a moonlight flight.
ivy #79: too tired to feelPhysically tired and emotionally exhausted, poor baby Ivy withdraws from her environment and interacts very little as she's moved to a hotel with Tonya's mother. The cleaning lady, Alma, is a friend of Tonya's mother, Tina. This woman seems to have a history of offering Tina a room for free "no questions asked," but seems a bit disturbed at the idea of leaving a toddler there. However, when Ivy is revealed to be "not human" (according to Tina), Alma simply remarks that she's seen weirder and checks in on her throughout the night as she fitfully sleeps. In the morning, when Melanie picks her up, they go into the subway and Ivy withdraws even more into her shell due to fear of the closed space, and ends up not even wanting to make herself light anymore as Melanie carries her. Her internal monologue indicates that she's just too tired to feel anything.
adele #64: what's comingWith her "strange sight in the sky" behind her--the incident in which she briefly met Weaver in the forest--Adele continues to make her way in the forest, using her dreams as tools to decide what to do next. She realizes a good plan is to seek out the non-human creatures who live on the beach, and after she takes a bath and philosophizes about her purpose, she heads in their direction, knowing she'll need to find shelter before the coming rain hits.
ivy #80: one good thingMelanie takes the subway and ends up spending the day at the library to have a place for Ivy to sleep and recuperate. Melanie fends off questions and comments from well-meaning adults who think she's skipping school (which she is), and after school's out she marches right over to Tonya's house and demands to know why the baby is acting withdrawn. Tonya admits that her father freaked out and might have scared her, but also seems unwilling to accept that the baby even remembers it. After insisting that Melanie take care not to bring the baby around while her father might be home, she does tell Melanie one good thing: her mother has given permission for Tonya to sneak the baby in at night, as long as they can train her to be quiet.
weaver #43: after the stormDax announces that he smells rain, so the three gather kindling for keeping dry in the cave, then barely have time to cook a meal before the storm begins. They hide in the cave during the rain and Alix makes a crack about Weaver being a bat, which angers him (and which causes him to spit acorn caps into his hair later while he's sleeping). In the morning, Weaver scouts the area looking for interesting items the storm might have washed up, and instead sees that Adele is on her way toward their base. As she approaches, they can see that she isn't human.
ivy #81: no more talkingWhile listening to Melanie and Tonya bicker about what she needs, Ivy gets frustrated and makes her discomfort known. She's momentarily placated when they both try to give her something she wants, but when they begin focusing on arguing with each other again, Ivy gives up and flies away, off to search for lunch and toys on her own.
adele #65: seeing meAdele encounters and introduces herself to Dax, Weaver, and Alix. She is deliberately confrontational because she perceives that they might otherwise expect her to take a submissive role in their company. Dax is fairly accepting, but Weaver is a little afraid of her (since she didn't tiptoe around the fact that she can know "impossible" things), and Alix's temper rises to meet Adele's attitude. By the end of their first conversation, the boys decide to have a private talk, and while Adele knows they will decide to accept her staying with them, she wonders whether she could learn a bit more tact.
ivy #82: at least i have thisAfter being on her own for the night and not really caring what anyone thinks about her antics, Ivy reconvenes with Melanie, who seems grumpy over her assumption that Ivy must've slept at Tonya's house. With that, Melanie sets out to try to win Ivy over with toys and comfortable surroundings, hoping that the baby will prefer the environment she constructed over Tonya's bedroom. Ivy wonders if Melanie was sad because she left.
weaver #44: a suspicious natureAfter having dealt with Adele's surprisingly forward and frank attitude, the boys are discussing whether they should let her stay, and Alix appears vehemently opposed to it. Weaver kind of enjoys bothering Alix and disagreeing with him. Alix seems to think his friends would have been a lot less welcoming if Adele had been a man bossing them around, though Weaver doesn't think that's why he's leaning toward welcoming her. He does feel a bit suspicious and acknowledges that Adele owes them an explanation for what she's doing there and more about her story.
ivy #83: things to giveA montage issue details Ivy and Melanie taking turns giving each other things, even though they don't always know what each other will appreciate. (Christmas appears to pass in this issue.) Ivy enjoys her days with Melanie and often goes to Tonya's at night, where she ends up sleeping between Tonya and Tara. She develops some measure of trust in the fact that Melanie will always be there for her.
dax #44: humble and civilNow that Adele has wandered onto their beach, Dax and Weaver and Alix have to figure out how to talk to her and figure out what this strange woman wants. Dax feels that his companions are a bit too brusque and that he should be the one to speak to her himself, and the others take offense when he insists that he should be the ambassador and they should stay quiet. Dax speaks carelessly and surprises his companions, and their reaction causes Dax to wonder whether he's really as civil as he thought.
ivy #84: boomIvy, frightened by New Year's fireworks, lets herself into Tonya's bedroom to hide. Because the family is up for the occasion, everyone--including the adults--hears Ivy crying quietly in the bedroom, and Tonya's father freaks out over her presence again. He's even further disturbed by the revelation that their security alarm is not armed for Tonya's window, suggesting that his wife has been allowing Ivy's visits. But then Tonya's mother puts her foot down on her husband's protests and asks him to have a heart when it comes to a crying child. Ivy feels a little better by the end of the issue because she's getting cuddled, though the bangs outside still scare her.
adele #66: superhumanAdele discusses her situation with Dax while Weaver and Alix listen in. She explains a few things about her abilities and declares that she's hoping to one day teach others like herself, at which point Dax and Alix tell her humans don't have those abilities. This surprises her, coming from people who are so improbable themselves. She knows her teacher was human, so she knows humans do sometimes have abilities of her caliber, but she must admit she doesn't know where or how she'll find them.
ivy #85: new year's resolutionWith Tonya's older sister Tara keeping Ivy happy with cookies and comfort, her parents Herman and Tina argue about what dangers the baby poses. Tina declares that her New Year's resolution is to stop letting her husband boss her around, and he replies that if she expects him to let her keep putting the family in danger by offering shelter to the baby, she'll have to "explain" Ivy and find a way to prove to him that she isn't dangerous. As an ultimatum, he says that if she cannot do so, he'll make the family move to another apartment to avoid being "haunted."
weaver #45: not one of usHaving promised to be quiet, Weaver lets Dax do all the talking in questioning Adele and finding out what she's up to and what she's there for. But when she tells them she was attracted to the area because other people from another word are there, Alix gets irritated when she insinuates he doesn't belong. They have a confrontation and Weaver has to try to silence Alix before he says something he'll regret. Adele attempts to mollify Alix by explaining her reasoning, and Weaver ponders how he's looking forward to having an intellectual equal around but is hoping she stops being so condescending.
ivy #86: stinging and ringingOne night when Ivy decides she wants to sleep in Tonya's bedroom again, she finds the older girl unresponsive to the flashlight signal, so despite Tonya making "shoo" signals at her she opens the window herself. A security alarm pierces the night and shocks the baby to the core, causing her to freeze up and actually fall a little before she catches herself. Unfortunately she had her hand on the side of the building when she fell, and now her hand is severely scraped. She flies away to get away from the sound, tries to collect her wits, and wonders what she's supposed to do about all the blood on her hand.
dax #45: for what purpose? While hammering out a disagreement between Alix and Adele, Dax observes how Adele uses her understanding of others to placate Alix and make him feel included. She points out that everyone but Alix is from another world, and when he argues that such a thing doesn't make him human, Adele agrees that he should get to define who he is. She wants to know, though, whether Dax, Weaver, or Alix know about an absent person who might also be from another world, and Weaver points out the singing invisible woman in the forest. Dax wonders whether Adele is gathering unusual people for some purpose, and whether he wants to be included if he doesn't understand why she's doing it.
ivy #87: loud noisesIvy waits for Melanie at the playground, hoping the older girl will come and "fix" her hand. Melanie does in fact find her and clean her up, but she's very curious about why Ivy keeps saying that her hand injury was caused by loud noises. She decides they need to talk to Tonya and possibly move the building home to somewhere else since as far as Melanie's concerned Tonya keeps traumatizing the baby.
adele #67: elementalAdele makes a case for her usefulness amongst her new companions by saying that she'll be able to share her knowledge with them and make their lives less uncertain. Furthermore, she seems them as an elemental quartet with her completing influence as the catalyst--the element of fire. She outlines how she thinks Alix is water, Weaver is air, and Dax is earth, and requests that they make their final decision regarding whether she can stay with them.
ivy #88: more than snacksMelanie takes Ivy back to Tonya's house, where she's frightened that the noise is going to start again. She cowers with her hands over her ears while Tonya's mother explains to Melanie what happened with the alarm (though she doesn't know how the baby hurt her hand). She also explains that she can't be a regular caregiver but is willing to help out. Melanie is not impressed and says they really need someone to take care of them. Unable to step into that position, Tonya's mother still gives earmuffs to Ivy and offers to bandage her hand.
weaver #46: boys against girlsWeaver, Alix, and Dax have to decide whether Adele can live with them, and only Alix is against it. When Weaver and Dax want to hear his reasoning, it sounds ridiculous to them; he keeps asserting that since Adele is female, she is very likely to have babies that they will have to take care of. After mocking him, Weaver and Dax get him to admit that he's not voting against her installation in the group on those grounds, and they turn to invite her to move in.
ivy #89: it's later nowMelanie has promised Ivy a new stuffed animal as a reward for moving all their possessions to a new roof, but since she hasn't delivered yet, Ivy keeps bothering her about it. Melanie, however, is distracted by a letter from Theresa, to which she responds immediately while Ivy tries to take off the bandage on her hand. Melanie has only just convinced her to keep it on when she begins demanding a stuffed animal again. Melanie confesses her feelings to Theresa in the letter she's writing.
meri lin #102: a new lifeAt their ultrasound appointment, Meri Lin and Fred find out that their child is a boy, and Fred announces that he's chosen the name Benjamin. Meri Lin approves, and thinks more about how finding out that he's a boy is helping her separate her second child's trajectory in her mind from that of her firstborn.
ivy #90: not a babyIvy is getting used to having her bandage off, and avoids using her hands to eat a candy bar. Tonya arrives and criticizes Melanie for feeding her junk food all the time, and they argue about food. Then Tonya reminds Melanie that it's spring break, which she'd forgotten because she was skipping school anyway, and while the girls observe Ivy, they decide she isn't a baby anymore and that it's weird for Melanie to keep calling her "baby."
adele #68: ordinary disorientationWhen the guys come back from their meeting and agree that she can live with them, Adele accepts and resolves to try to get along with her company. She keeps silent on her myriad suggestions for changes in their way of life, wanting to avoid being seen as barging in and mothering them. And at night, Adele goes off to deal with her disorientation by taking a little walk. She runs into Weaver, who tells her not to worry and assures her she'll adjust soon.
ivy #91: two whole alphabetsMelanie decides to try to teach Ivy her letters so she'll be able to help write letters to Theresa. She chooses to teach by way of two sets of alphabet magnets, but Ivy seems a lot more interested in playing with them and refusing to let Melanie have them back.
dax #46: her strengthDax is excited about the idea of learning from and teaching Adele, the newest person in their group. He ends up getting more than he bargained for when he asks what she'll be teaching them, and is a bit confused by the wealth of information she has about their health (and how to make it better). He asks her about her methods of knowing and finds it somewhat incomprehensible and overwhelming.
ivy #92: there's a catchMelanie gets caught stealing and unexpectedly gets offered free candy by the shopkeeper--with a catch. If she won't steal from him, he'll give her expired candy for free anytime she wants. Ivy, on the other hand, is more excited than anything about the fact that she's beginning to recognize the letters A and B in real-life situations. Her enthusiasm leads her to get noticed flying by the shopkeeper.
adele #69: justify my intuitionWhen Adele tells Alix it's dangerous to fish today but gives him no further logic to back it up, he demands justification. Adele becomes frustrated that he doesn't trust her, and gives him some attitude before acknowledging that she's willing to give him some kind of demonstration so that he'll trust her more easily in the future.
ivy #93: more lettersMelanie fills the shopkeeper in on the quirks of her baby companion while the two of them eat expired lollipops. The shopkeeper is hesitant and a little in awe of a baby with superpowers, but he's eager to be friendly to her, and finds it reassuring when the baby starts laughing over learning about the letter P.
adele #70: less a mysteryAdele consents to let Alix watch her puzzle out why he shouldn't risk fishing, and through a predictive line diagram Adele figures out that consuming any fish caught that day would cause sickness. Alix asks questions about how Adele learned to use her abilities, and she begins to tell him what she knows.
ivy #94: room for usA montage issue shows that Ivy and Melanie go to the store nearly every day, and we learn that the shopkeeper's name is Erick. He has a co-worker whom Ivy does not like because his attention is uncomfortable, so she tries not to go to the store at night. With Melanie, Ivy learns counting and listens to letters from Theresa, but doesn't remember who Theresa is and doesn't know why Melanie wants Theresa's letters if they make her cry. Theresa sends news of getting her own apartment with room for her children, and Melanie is frustrated that she can't move into one of Theresa's rooms.
dax #47: if i liked herDax and Weaver notice that Adele and Alix are away talking somewhere, and when Weaver jokes that maybe they're having a romantic conversation, they talk about their attitudes toward dating outside their species, and Dax wonders about the differences between him and his brother.
ivy #95: sparklesHaving observed that Mr. Erick calls her "fairy girl," Ivy gets curious about what fairies are and Melanie is happy to educate her with books. Ivy becomes fixated on the glitter in the fairy book and wants Melanie to get her sparkles. Melanie brings her glitter and a sparkly shirt. She can't wait to show Mr. Erick that she's sparkly, but has no idea what the fairies' wings are about.
adele #71: rarest of the rareAlix and Adele discuss the possibility of Adele's next student, and Alix is skeptical that humans with psychic abilities even exist. Adele resigns herself to having to put up with his disbelief, but she loses some respect for him permanently.
ivy #96: not a messWhile playing with glitter in Mr. Erick's store, Ivy experiments with new ways to use her abilities, and while she's distracted with her efforts, Melanie discusses how and why she'd like to be in Theresa's family with Mr. Erick. Melanie reveals that Child Protective Services has begun to investigate her living situation because she's missed too much school.
adele #72: the big pictureAdele and Alix continue to discuss their thoughts, and this time they cover their satisfaction with the current outdoor living situation (Alix would like to get something less "primitive"), and Adele inquires about Alix's aspirations in life.
ivy #97: taken awayIvy accidentally upsets Melanie while pretending their storage boxes are a monster. She thinks she scared Melanie and tries to comfort her, but dialogue to Tonya reveals what's really going on: Melanie was upset because the baby's creative game was "cute and funny," and she's worried about Child Protective Services investigating her family and putting her in foster care, at which point she's convinced she won't be able to see or take care of the baby anymore. Tonya suggests she try to get Ivy into foster care with her if she has to go.
adele #73: no sense of selfAdele explains that she will eventually enlist Alix's help in tracking down the invisible woman in the forest. She wants to help this person from another dimension because she has come from so far away that she's lost nearly all of herself. Adele shows Alix a little of her methodology for researching the issue, but he decides to go get breakfast, and leaves her alone.
ivy #98: pen palsTonya gets sent on a mission from Melanie to collect the baby and have her lead the way to Mr. Erick's store. There, she delivers a letter from Melanie stating that she's no longer able to roam as she pleases because her new foster parents are picking her up and dropping her off from school. She'll soon be relocating to New Jersey to live with her dad, but before then Melanie wants Mr. Erick to bring the baby for a visit if he can, and wants to stay in touch through letters. Tonya gets paid in candy for her role as a messenger. Ivy's oblivious to what's going on and seems preoccupied by wanting to sort things into colors.
weaver #47: concept of a womanWeaver and Dax continue to chat about their perspectives on women. They also talk about what they think of Adele and their changing group dynamics. Weaver thinks about whether he'd find a female of his own race attractive, and thinks he might remember having had a relationship in his old life.
ivy #99: say it againAfter quite a few days without seeing Melanie, Ivy starts getting antsy whenever she hears her mentioned, and even though she's oblivious to the arrangements, Mr. Erick has been making plans to bring her to where Melanie is staying. This finally happens, and Erick and Ivy meet Melanie's foster parents, Olivia and Martin. Melanie wants to give the baby a bath, and is delighted to find that in her absence, Ivy has learned to pronounce her name correctly.
meri lin #103: the real nightmaresMeri Lin is having weird dreams again, and this time she dreams that her new baby Benjamin is normal and perfect only to be visited by a much older Amanda who demands that she choose between her two children. After dream-Meri Lin assures dream-Amanda that there is room for two kids, dream-Amanda rejects this as proof that her mother loves Benjamin more because he's normal, and leaves forever. Meri Lin wakes up wishing she actually had to worry about how her children would relate to each other, and resolves to put up more posters to find Amanda.
ivy #100: who's gonnaMelanie gives Ivy a bath and dries her off, after which she gets sad thinking about who's going to take care of the baby after she moves in with her dad in New Jersey and what she's going to do without her. Ivy, by contrast, is oblivious as to why Melanie is focused on hugging her, and asks to play a game. Melanie understands that a child this young can't understand they're about to lose each other, and resigns herself to just spending time with her as if nothing's wrong.
adele #74: coming home to themA montage issue discusses Adele's various attempts to make life better for her companions, and focuses on the hiking trips she takes to the city to acquire supplies. The necessary items she picks up aren't the only reason she journeys alone, though. The trips are necessary vacations for her mental health--and they help her properly appreciate her company when she returns.
ivy #101: the systemMelanie finds out that Mr. Erick's cover story is that he is the baby's foster parent, and she meekly requests that she might be allowed to take Ivy with her when she goes to her dad's. Her foster mother Olivia dismisses this as ridiculous, at which she gets upset and storms out of the room. Mr. Erick promises to bring the baby by for a visit before she has to move for good.
adele #75: when soon comesAdele decides it's a good day to try to gather the crew and find the invisible woman. She's realized that this mysterious singing person in the forest is likely to respond to food, so she and the guys split up and walk into the forest, holding fragrant snacks. Once alone, Adele realizes she hears humming and begins to follow the voice. She intends to be ready when the creature stops to rest.
ivy #102: taken care ofAfter an indeterminate length of time fending for herself and being antisocial, Ivy realizes that no one seems to be coming to play with her anymore and decides she feels like eating one of Mr. Erick's meals. When she goes to his store, she succeeds in scoring some canned pasta--served hot!--but is oblivious to the sad news Mr. Erick gives her about Melanie. She's been gone so long that she missed Melanie's move date, and now she's gone, having left a letter that the baby will understand when she's older. Unable to understand what this has to do with her, Ivy asks for string cheese. Melanie's letter is included at the end of the comic.
adele #76: the only sign of herAdele tracks the invisible woman into the forest and manages to get her attention with the cooked fish she's carrying. She's able to see the strange distorted outline of the creature. After the woman drops the washcloth and seems disgusted, Adele realizes the creature only eats plants. The adventure ends when the woman flies away.
ivy #103: one with a windowWhile stealing an orange from the usual fruit stand, Ivy encounters the merchant, Keith, who remembers her from nearly a year ago and remarks that she's gotten big. Ivy doesn't remember him, though. Resuming whatever plans they had for showing the amazing flying baby to a mysterious third party named Steph, Keith and his brother Ernie try to keep Ivy inside the store and then the apartment by feeding her and entertaining her with crayons and television. When she's tired, they lock her in a room without a window, much to her dismay.
adele #77: safety netAdele heads off to collect the others who are still searching for the invisible woman, and she ends up running into Alix, who's had a scare because of running into a wild animal that wanted his food. He demands to know why Adele didn't warn him about the near-attack, and she maintains that she didn't know about it. She makes it very clear that she is not to be regarded as responsible for his safety even though she does promise to warn him if she knows about danger in advance, and she privately ponders what the extent of her responsibility for her crew actually is.
ivy #104: mystery babyAfter a good night's sleep, Ivy finds herself locked in the windowless room and manages to manipulate the door from the other side to free herself without having to break the door. She finds this encouraging and is in a good mood when she meets the promised contact of Keith and Ernie: a woman named Steph who enters with a bag of donuts and seems perplexed and temporarily speechless when she sees a flying baby. After tentatively giving Ivy a donut and observing her, she starts answering Keith's questions about what happens next, and makes it clear that she plans to try to get an academic institution to investigate the phenomenon of her "macro-psychokinesis"--after some more documentation, of course.
meri lin #104: indelible marksMeri Lin is now farther along in her pregnancy, reflecting on how it's different from her pregnancy with Amanda. She thinks about how she and Fred are dealing with sadness and how each of them are going to support each other to help them carry their burdens.
ivy #105: what wordsWhile Ivy is pursuing food and drink, Steph notices she has the ability to move more than one item at a time, and after becoming curious about her ability to lift heavy objects, she makes several requests of the baby, having her lift a refrigerator and a car, framing it as a game. However, Ivy refuses to try to lift two cars because one car made her uncomfortable, and she gets frustrated that she doesn't have any words to explain what she felt so Steph will stop asking her. She almost flies away, but Steph turns on the charm and promises more games, at least temporarily convincing Ivy to come in again.
weaver #48: in the neighborhoodAfter the group has returned from an attempt to connect with the invisible woman (with only Adele being marginally successful), they talk about their experiences and opinions over lunch. Weaver really likes the idea of finding another person who knows what flying is like, but the others don't seem to understand why he has such a strong desire to share that experience.
ivy #106: all for meSteph decides to get Ivy prepared to take a journey the next day, and gives her a bath and some grooming. She sends Keith to the store for some clothes and an antihistamine that she plans to use to sedate the baby so she can't make trouble for the driver. Keith seems to object a little but goes along with Steph's orders. Ivy really enjoys being cleaned and primped, but notices there's a strange distance in the way Steph touches her--she doesn't want to cuddle, exactly, though she's not afraid to come into contact with her. After Steph tests the medicine to see if it will actually put her to sleep, she crashes almost immediately, hoping she'll get to sleep in Steph's lap.
dax #48: practically destroyedDax and the others have split up to look for the invisible woman in the forest, and when Alix returns to the group he's had a sighting. Having managed to actually SEE her without her invisibility field on, Alix explains that she looks a bit like an angel, and describes having shared seaweed salad with her. Adele is inspired to have a vision of the invisible woman's home world, which suggests that her invisiblity is an evolutionary defense against the sun because her people's skin is so pale. Sadly, Adele also knows that the woman's trip across the dimension is what is responsible for her inability to speak or reason typically. Dax wonders what's left of her.
ivy #107: what's safeIvy wakes up very thirsty many hours after getting drugged with an over-the-counter antihistamine, and the adults are glad she's awake. Keith gets her some water and begins to express concern about the morality of drugging the baby when it had such a severe effect on her, and even though Steph fully acknowledges that the length of her sleep was very odd and suggests her biology may be different enough to make medicine unpredictable, she still intends to use the syrup on her again to sedate her for the trip to a university for study. Keith becomes strangely protective and says what Steph is doing is wrong, and after taking a stand, talks her into giving her a reduced dose the next day if she must. Keith takes her off to watch cartoons.
adele #78: language leftAfter Alix met and described his encounter with the invisible woman in the forest, Adele discusses how they might approach her next time, and wonders whether she has any language left from her old dimension. Weaver asks whether she remembers her native language, and after reciting something in Shioan to demonstrate what it sounds like, she wonders about how long she'll retain her language when she has no one to speak it with.
ivy #108: all wallsKeith and Ernie have a little argument about the ethics surrounding sending an unsuspecting baby off to some academic institution with a woman who will drug her, but Steph ignores it and proceeds with her plans. Ivy wakes up in a carseat in an animal transport truck and panics because she feels confined. She's wearing shoes--which she's not used to--strapped into a chest harness for the carseat and in a dark, enclosed truck. Going back and forth between panic and determination to get free, Ivy finally manages to escape everything she doesn't like, and though she's still feeling the after-effects of the medicine, she feels rather proud of herself for taking control and getting out of the bad situation. Even though now she's above a highway with no idea where she is.
weaver #49: what words are forNow that the group has run into the invisible woman several times and managed to feed her, Adele and Weaver are forming a plan to try to communicate with her. Weaver finally gets to see what the invisible woman looks like when she's not invisible, and while talking to Adele about the hope for her eventual speech, she spontaneously starts repeating pieces of their sentences. Adele thinks this might be a sign that she will absorb simple words to communicate if they teach her with food.
ivy #109: a secretWhile flying toward a group of tall buildings in the distance that she assumes must be where she belongs, Ivy thinks over the events that led to her getting trapped in a box and realizes using her powers in front of people causes many of the experiences she hates. Once she gets back into town, she's decided that in front of other people, she should act as though she can't fly or move things remotely. Perhaps then, she reasons, people will be genuinely nice to her. She comforts herself with the thought that she can still fly when no one is looking.
adele #79: giving her choicesAdele decides to see if she can get the invisible woman to make choices using words, and offers her three different foods. The woman doesn't respond well to Adele's encouragement and isn't able to comprehend the way she's using words in context. She decides she'll have to return with a partner in order to demonstrate the behavior she wants.
ivy #110: heavy thingsFeeling paralyzed and weighed down by all her needs, Ivy simply chooses to do nothing and sits on the steps of a shop all night. In the morning, a woman comes out and begins sweeping the steps, and when Ivy hears the woman speak to her, she's suddenly overcome with a desire to be taken care of by this woman and vows to be good. The woman invites her inside the shop for bread and milk.
meri lin #105: have you forgottenMeri Lin has to answer the phone and talk to Fred's older sister while he's out helping a neighbor change a lightbulb. Turns out his sister is pregnant, and since she refers to their shared situation with the description "we're both about to be mothers," Meri Lin feels this is insensitive because it ignores Amanda's existence; Meri Lin already WAS a mother. She gives the phone to Fred upon his return and reflects on how Fred's sister should be allowed to have her joy without having to think about the bittersweet nature of Meri Lin's situation.
ivy #111: who takes care of you?Pleasantly surprised by the interior of the shop, Ivy tentatively explores in the cabinets when the shopkeeper's back is turned, but gets plucked off the counter when the woman fears she'll break her neck from climbing. She gets warm milk and bread while the woman quizzes her on where her parents are and who takes care of her. She can only answer that she takes care of herself, and hopes the woman warms to her enough to touch her and treat her kindly.
adele #80: connecting the conceptsAdele and Alix try to demonstrate to the invisible woman the proper way of expressing which food they like. They act out scenarios for her which feature them asking for their favorite foods and receiving them. When they finally present the question of "which food do you like?" to the invisible woman, she has a breakthrough and chooses a food, though she's unable to do so if the wording of the question isn't exactly the same. Adele feels that weak conditioning is not true learning, but that it is nevertheless an improvement to not being able to communicate with her at all.
ivy #112: about my sizeThe shopkeeper seems curious about Ivy's hands and feet, which she doesn't understand, and then the woman gives Ivy a cinnamon roll to eat while she goes upstairs and fetches her daughter Charlotte. Ivy is unsure of what to make of this child--she's a little surprised by coming face to face with someone about her size--but she's not concerned about much besides eating another cinnamon roll. Charlotte asks her questions and volunteers that she's five years old, but Ivy doesn't know how to respond or whether she wants to.
dax #49: unnamedA montage issue shows the beach crew getting closer to the invisible woman and teaching her to accept their company. In preparation for getting her to wear clothes, Adele successfully gets her to wear a bracelet, which she likes. Dax wonders about what they should call her for a name, and wishes she could name herself.
ivy #113: i think they're goodAfter the nice shopkeeper looks Ivy over at close range to get a good idea of how to describe her as a lost child to the police, she thinks better of it because the child looks so strange and she's unsure of whether this is an ordinary lost kid. The scrutiny of her company makes Ivy a little uncomfortable so she distracts herself with looking through a stained-glass window. Soon she gets tired and falls asleep on the fuzzy rug, and Charlotte seems excited about telling her mother to take care of customers while she takes care of babysitting. Ivy drifts off feeling safe.
weaver #50: significance for herWith meaningful language interaction still unachieved with the invisible woman, Weaver is surprised that one day Alix comes back from an encounter with her claiming that she's told him her name. In a retelling by Alix, the group learns that the invisible woman appears to have memorized a simplistic set of exchanges that Alix accidentally triggered by asking her to shake hands, and eventually she answers his question about what her name is and begins answering to the unexpected name "Neptune." Weaver and Alix feel this name is a bit ill-fitting since it's masculine and associated with the ocean, not the air, but they agree that its significance to her is all that matters.
ivy #114: lots of knotsWhile Ivy takes a nap, Charlotte reads to her and her mother watches the two of them. When she wakes up, Charlotte mentions that she has messy hair and the shopkeeper offers to comb it, but because little Charlotte suggested that too many knots can make your hair fall out, Ivy scrambles to finger-comb her tangles. Because she didn't do it entirely with her fingers, the shopkeeper notices something strange about it, but Ivy turns her attention to Charlotte's long spring curls and expresses jealousy over how bouncy they are. She ends the issue thinking about how she wants curls of her own.
dax #50: like an animalAdele comes back from a trip with a yellow dress for their recently named mysterious forest dweller, and the group discusses the possible drawbacks of giving her clothes. Weaver seems concerned about it and Alix is dismissive about his worries, which makes Dax think his brother has an insight no one else has thought of.
ivy #115: making a curlyWhile trying to make her hair imitate Charlotte's hair, Ivy accidentally uses her powers to hold a lock of her hair in a spiral, which gets the other girl's attention and makes her think maybe Ivy's hair is special. It takes Ivy a second to realize what the big deal is, and then she gets upset that she couldn't avoid revealing her abilities. She sulks and wonders whether she will have to leave because they're staring at her.
