LIST OF COMICS 201-300

weaver #19: different and the sameWeaver shows Dax some of his possessions, and they end up pointing out each other's similarities and differences.
ivy #15: the happiest feelingMelanie and Theresa get to talking about baby Ivy and what their responsibilities are. Melanie is just eager to show Theresa the baby's "magic tricks" and refuses to address her by name. It's clear Theresa is trying to grasp the enormity of this situation, but baby Ivy is disappointed that her friends are talking instead of playing with her. She tries to make them play.
adele #55: one of themStill trying to find her feet after her strangely traumatic experience helping others with her predictions, Adele decides to let her brain take a day off. She goes shopping at the mall and ponders how much she's actually "one of them"--she wants to remind herself that she's not a god, but she knows she's also indisputably an outsider. She wonders again where she really belongs.
dax #23: honor the motherDax starts a fire for atmosphere instead of cooking food this time, wanting to share a serene celebration of sorts with his new companion. The two look at the moon and discuss the best ways to honor the Mother, and they touch on what they think the "Father" might be in a spiritual context.
ivy #16: basic thingsTheresa responds to Melanie's sarcasm by writing her name on Melanie's hand with a marker so she won't forget it. Ivy is interested in the marker and steals it from them, and Theresa and Melanie discuss what babies need and what Melanie can do to assume the responsibility of helping this baby as much as she can. Theresa ends up writing a checklist on Melanie's arm with another marker.
weaver #20: namelessWeaver reflects on how glad he is to have his "brother" there, then goes to sleep. In the morning, they have fish for breakfast and talk about how neither of them has a name. They agree to name each other.
ivy #17: learn by watchingAfter Ivy sheds her diaper, Theresa and Melanie fight over who will clean her up, and Theresa attempts to make Melanie feel silly for not being mature enough to handle gross things parents have to deal with when they have babies. Melanie agrees that she'd be happier taking care of Ivy if she was potty trained, so they decide to try their luck on getting her to go on the potty.
meri lin #93: behind the maskMeri Lin, back in school, discusses the weirdness of feeling like she has her old life back, and how she handles it when someone reminds her of her recent tragedy.
ivy #18: water soundsTheresa has a smashing success teaching Ivy to go on the potty, though she finds it very amusing that the baby "hovered" while she did her business. Ivy feels like the whole thing was a really excellent game, and Melanie is not happy with being spied on while doing her own business. At the end of the comic the toilet flushing scares the baby.
dax #24: colors of languageDax discovers that his new friend has the ability to conceal himself well in the trees (even though he's not a very good color for it), and then they discuss language. Dax is very excited at the prospect of Weaver teaching him more language and how to use the written word (now that he's revealed he can also read and write).
ivy #19: no more cryingWhile Ivy tries her best to play with water (and gets frustrated), Melanie and Theresa talk about why Theresa has to run off to an appointment. We get some history of why Theresa is homeless and how it happened and she reveals that she has untreated epilepsy. When she leaves, Melanie is stuck with Ivy who is crying due to accidentally soaking herself. She panics and tries to give up on taking care of her because she doesn't feel up to the job on her own, but Ivy makes it clear that she needs her, which makes Melanie realize she's all this poor baby has.
weaver #21: a brand new wordWeaver stresses over not knowing what to name his "brother," and decides to just make up a word for him to honor his uniqueness. When morning comes and the two name each other, Weaver is pleased with his name (and what it means), but isn't sure his choice for Dax measures up. His friend accepts the name with glee, though, and Weaver teaches him to write it in the sand.
ivy #20: big storeIvy and Melanie go shopping--well, really, they go on a stealing expedition in a large multi-purpose retail store. Ivy just follows Melanie's instructions on getting out the window with all their stolen baby supplies tied up in a blanket, and Melanie sets off with Ivy on a quest to find a place for her to live. Ivy doesn't really know what's going on but all she cares about at the moment is not having Melanie leave her.
adele #56: my current selfAdele sees part of a teen movie while at the mall and wonders whether she ever had a "stupid teenage girl phase." She buys makeup and hair clips at the mall, tries them on in the privacy of the library after hours, and mimics the teen girls' behavior, only to find that as she suspected it's not something she finds comfortable. She also tries behaving like a young child, but decides she's more interested in pursuing the path for her current self rather than trying to relive what could have been her past.
ivy #21: in chargeMelanie gets inspired to make the new rooftop "home" into something of a clubhouse, and directs Ivy around town to keep picking up new items for their place. By the end of the adventure, Ivy is hungry but content to let Melanie tell her what to do. Finally Melanie remembers to feed her and she has never been so happy to see applesauce.
dax #25: the context of timeWhile Weaver is napping, Dax practices his letters by writing in the sand, and becomes frustrated that he has nothing to write. Taking inspiration from the date on a magazine, Dax decides to draw a calendar, and shows it to Weaver when he wakes up. The two decide they should start keeping track of time and the moon's movements. But first they have to find paper, because the waves destroy their sand calendar.
ivy #22: anything i wantIvy gets tired after a meal and Melanie tucks her into her "bed": a laundry basket with a couple pillows. Ivy is nervous about Melanie leaving, but is too tired to do anything about it. When she wakes up alone in the middle of the night, she panics briefly before realizing she can actually take care of her own immediate needs, and she vows to be good until Melanie gets back.
weaver #22: two's enoughWeaver finds a chalk-like rock and uses it to scrawl a couple calendar months on the inside of their cave. Dax and Weaver ponder the dates of the full and new moons and begin to make plans for what they should do to celebrate both. Weaver finds himself having to cheer Dax up when he expresses his doubts about a party being able to exist with only two people.
ivy #23: for big girlsIvy deals with her disorientation on top of the building at night until she feels tired again, and in the morning things look different. She's not entirely comfortable alone, but she's able to enjoy herself pretending that her laundry basket bed is a car until Melanie arrives and greets her, having worried during the night. Ivy wonders what the rules are for how she has to act to bring the people she wants to her.
meri lin #94: grieving differentlyMeri Lin comes home to see that Fred's drinking. He's sad because he got his own office at work but knows he wouldn't be able to handle putting pictures of his daughter up like everyone else. Meri Lin, wanting to offer comfort (and craving physical attention herself), finds both her touch and her reassurance rebuffed, but suggests he trust her intuition that their baby is all right.
ivy #24: i'll let herIvy's quite pleased that Melanie's there to share the day with her until her idea of fun is to brush the baby's hair (which is uncomfortable), followed by exclaiming over her various unusual features while examining her at close range and claiming she looks like a cartoon. Oh well; at least she got a cute ponytail out of it.
dax #26: expressions of honorDax and Weaver get used to each other over the course of a few weeks of planning and executing moon rituals. They come up with a new "successful hunt" procedure, and they enjoy the new and full moon rituals. They decide to take their time in coming up with the best ways to honor their "Mother," and Dax again expresses how thankful he is to have a "brother."
ivy #25: being heldMelanie takes Ivy to the playground again and they find Theresa. Melanie unexpectedly has a breakdown about being scared of taking care of Ivy, so Theresa tries to comfort her, which causes Ivy to feel ignored and demand attention also. Theresa determines that Melanie's childcare choices are not up to her standards, and demands to be taken to the girls' "clubhouse."
weaver #23: endless dayA montage issue shows Weaver touching on each of four experiences he now values most in the world, noting that only three of them involve Dax. He loves the moon rituals, the hunting aftermath they've created, and helping Dax learn to read. His fourth love, flying, has to be enjoyed on his own.
ivy #26: home sweet homeMelanie wakes Ivy up when they get to the "home" building, and Theresa is startled when waking up makes the baby instinctively lighten herself. Melanie badgers her into providing the ride up to the roof (and quells the baby's cranky screams with the promise of her "Kitty"), and Theresa opts to climb the stairs. When Theresa sees how much stolen merchandise Melanie has taken to furnish the "clubhouse," she gets a lecture on morals and is "threatened" with church. They plan to visit Theresa's pastor friend, also with the ulterior motive that he may agree to let Ivy stay in one of the spare rooms. During the discussion, Ivy's fallen asleep, content with her Kitty.
adele #57: a stepAdele decides she's tired of being alone in a crowded area and decides to be alone out in nature. She goes off on her own and makes it out of the city.
ivy #27: can't make meTheresa is denied access to any free church rooms to keep the baby in since the pastor won't take responsibility for unsupervised children. Melanie and Theresa fight about this, and Ivy is angered that her wish for snacktime is being ignored, so she decides she means business and flies away. Theresa demands that Melanie stay for the sermon, and chases the baby down to give her a granola bar (after which she calms down). But Ivy has realized that these two people are actually with her on HER terms, and that she can leave in search of whatever she wants anytime she wants. They can't make her be good, and she's finally starting to realize it. . . .
dax #27: the same voiceWeaver tells Dax that he heard a singing woman in the forest, and Dax suggests that it is probably the voice of the Mother, who is rewarding them with a song for giving Her offerings. Weaver is doubtful, but Dax has heard the voice too and is convinced the singing is not coming from a living creature.
ivy #28: up hereIvy gets fed up with Theresa and Melanie arguing about the best way to earn money, so she flies away in a huff. She finds a cake she wants and ends up breaking the window trying to get it. She flies away with her prize, thinking she likes it that no one follows her when she goes up high.
weaver #24: deepWeaver and Dax discuss the meaning of the feminine and masculine elements, and Weaver makes a plan to dedicate his sword to the Mother. Dax thinks his thoughts on dedicating his weapon are very deep.
ivy #29: what's supposed to happenIvy gets sticky from her cake, falls asleep in a restaurant, and is discovered by wait staff who contact the police about a lost child. Ivy gets fed chicken nuggets, but she gets fed up with having her face wiped and her ears touched, so she loses her temper and escapes, taking the chicken nuggets with her.
dax #28: dedicationDax experiences some self-consciousness while performing his poem written for the Mother in front of Weaver. But he had nothing to worry about; Weaver enjoys the poem and uses it to dedicate his sword to Her as well. Then Dax is puzzled by Weaver's joke about needing to go do guy things after all the emotion.
ivy #30: if they yellIvy flies around, a little distraught and thirsty, but she finally hears Melanie calling from the rooftop she's been looking for! After a joyful reunion, Melanie starts reprimanding Ivy like an adult, telling her not to run away again, but Ivy is having none of that, and puts Melanie in her place (but not without a kind gesture afterwards!).
adele #58: trusting my feetAdele sits by a lake with a feeling that she once did this with her teacher, and determines that she needs to go toward the next step in her journey. Unfortunately, she knows which way to walk but doesn't know what she'll find at the end of the path. She ruminates on the frustration inherent in knowing the direction without knowing the destination.
ivy #31: far awayIvy is feeling rather saucy and ends up making Melanie a bit sour as she demands praise for her "artwork." (When she doesn't get it, she pretends her stuffed cat said it was a "pitty pitcher.") After Melanie makes sure she's okay for the night, Ivy goes to sleep happy in her laundry basket, and in the morning she finds herself a bit scared to venture forward from the building since she lost it the last time. She devises a way to avoid losing her "home" by telekinetically holding onto her kitty toy while she flies away; even though she goes a significant distance away from Kitty, she can sense where he is, though it's a weird experience for her to handle something so far away from herself. She wonders how far she can go without losing her remote awareness of the plush toy.
weaver #25: too much faithWeaver runs into the mysterious singing phenomenon in the forest again, and this time he decides it must be an invisible being. During an attempt to investigate, he accidentally spooks it, causing it to jump into his tree momentarily and fly away. He flies to Dax with his news only to be told it can't be a physical creature if it's invisible; Dax still believes this is a manifestation of the Mother Goddess. Weaver finds himself annoyed that Dax tends to consider everything he encounters some kind of support of his faith, whether it is or not.
ivy #32: if i let goIvy reaches her limit on being able to hold her toy while flying away, so she has to choose between returning or losing her remote sense of the way to her home. She decides she'll spend the day within her range so she can always find the building again, and proceeds to steal an orange (while frightening the fruit stand owner) and rip up a flower bed. Mysteriously, she senses that her toy spontaneously moved, so she flies up to check it out only to find that Melanie is back and had tried to pick her stuffed animal up. Melanie observes that Ivy is sticky and dirty, and decides she needs a bath. Ivy is very excited about that idea.
meri lin #95: so close but so far awayMourning Fred's distant behavior, Meri Lin longs for physical affection and ruminates on the situation. Finally, after they go to bed, Meri Lin snuggles up to Fred in desperation, and is relieved and satisfied by his automatic reciprocation. It gives her hope that he will one day be physically affectionate with her again while they're both awake.
ivy #33: a little bit something elseMelanie tries to give Ivy a bath in a public fountain, but the baby is a lot more interested in convincing Melanie to come bathe with her. Not understanding privacy issues, she attempts to "help" Melanie undress for the bath, which makes Melanie freak out and slap her across the face. Stunned by this treatment, Ivy doesn't cry or get angry; she just seeks solace and hugs Melanie without understanding any of what she's yelling about. Things go back to normal and Ivy sits still to let Melanie shampoo her hair, but she's left feeling very unsettled about letting herself be bossed around, and finds herself wondering why she didn't hit Melanie back.
dax #29: perfect balanceA somewhat montage-like episode features Dax's thoughts on winter and some day-to-day information about how they're surviving in the lean season. Dax is still quite content despite the repetitiveness and difficulty of his life.
ivy #34: look at meTheresa helps Melanie figure out Ivy's diapers and gives her some discipline advice. Meanwhile, Ivy would really like Theresa's undivided attention, and begins to get frustrated that Theresa keeps talking to Melanie. She feels she needs to do something to claim the spotlight, but is mainly just frustrated that Theresa doesn't automatically know what she wants.
weaver #26: nature's natureDisaster strikes when Weaver gets caught in a storm while trying to gather acorns. He gets blown into a tree and knocked out, and when he wakes up he's practically frozen. Unable to fly in his condition, he hikes home and finally makes it, only to find that Dax doesn't seem to think his experience could have been fatal due to believing the Mother is protecting them. Weaver gets angry and makes a speech about Nature's nature, and Dax finally sobers and acknowledges that Weaver is right this time.
ivy #35: something to sayIvy demands Theresa's attention and gets some very basic conversation out of her, but Melanie keeps interrupting, which causes Ivy to lose her temper and "kidnap" Theresa, flying her up to the next level of the building. Melanie seems angry and leaves--claiming not to care, of course--and Ivy tries to figure out why Theresa had such a strange reaction to flying and whether walking down stairs might be more fun than flying.
dax #30: why do we?Dax has a faith crisis because Weaver suggested their devotion to their beliefs does not protect them from harm. Dax discusses the matter with his brother and finds resolution, and is pleasantly surprised by the depth of Weaver's wisdom.
ivy #36: in good handsWhile playing on the stairs, Ivy and Theresa get yelled at by a woman on the street who thinks Ivy is in danger because she looks so precarious on the stairs. Theresa protects her and takes her for a last meal before heading to the shelter for the night. There, Ivy is unpleasantly surprised to re-encounter a woman who thought she was a "devil-baby" last time she was there, and Theresa has to comfort her. She feels unsettled as she falls asleep.
adele #59: supposed toAdele reaches her destination--a primitive shelter for backpackers--and ruminates on her purpose while reading a physics book she accidentally took from the library. Inspired by humans' ingenuity and curiosity, Adele decides that instead of waiting to "find" her purpose, she should make her own, and decides she will simply learn more about humans for the time being until she finds a way she can both help them and be comfortable.
ivy #37: they're not meanIvy decides she feels cooped up the morning after spending the night with Theresa in the shelter, so she flies around until she wants breakfast. Getting an orange from the same stand as she did last time attracts the attention of the merchant a second time, but this time he wishes to draw her in and keep her around until another person can meet her and see her do her "magic." He accomplishes this by keeping Ivy busy with cookies and drawing paper, and Ivy isn't sure whether she trusts these men or not.
weaver #27: what i must have hadWeaver and Dax start picking up cool stuff they find after a storm, and Weaver comes across a pair of discarded women's underwear. It makes him think about his perception of women, which he discusses with Dax, and though he comes to the conclusion that neither of them are attracted to human women, he wishes he remembered what attraction was like for people like him.
ivy #38: a bigger mysteryIvy discovers she can play with the boxes of produce in Keith's shop, and she whizzes around doing so while the two men discuss whether they think she's a magical creature or a human with superpowers.
dax #31: describing the momentsDax reflects on his accomplishments in literacy/language, and how he feels about his brother's role in shaping his mind.
ivy #39: no one to showThe guys who have been discussing Ivy's status as a human or a magical creature continue to debate what should be done with her, but she is oblivious and leaves. She spends the day having fun--distributing her drawings inside windows, having drinks with her stuffed kitty, and flying around having adventures. Unfortunately the day ends in a frightening way--Ivy is awoken by a thunderstorm and is caught in the middle of it. But Melanie, surprisingly, shows up and rescues her.
ivy #40: it made her stayContinuing her "rescue," Melanie instructs Ivy to break a lock so they can get into a store after hours and use the supplies to get dry and comfortable. Ivy can't seem to help crying even though the crisis has passed, but this time her behavior doesn't spook Melanie . . . it only draws her in. Melanie and Ivy sleep in a beanbag chair in stolen pajamas, and Melanie ponders aloud how taking care of Ivy is making her want to have her own kids someday.
ivy #41: to save us allAfter sleeping in the store overnight, Melanie and Ivy escape without being seen and go back to their rooftop. Ivy is scared at the memory of the last time she was there and Melanie comforts her, which is when Theresa shows up again. She expresses disappointment that Melanie is cutting school and leaving home at odd hours to take care of Ivy, and then she reveals that she is working on a plan that will lead to her getting a job, a residence, and her children back if all goes well. Once that happens, she promises to take Ivy in, but until then she wants Melanie to "coast". . . .
ivy #42: my favorite timeIvy's first real "montage" episode details her emerging routine and her four "times" ("Mennie Time," "Learning Time," "I Want Time," and "Sleeping Time"), and how each one appears to be her favorite. (She does not appear to notice the contradiction.)
weaver #28: a hard timeWeaver decides to add variety to his and Dax's life by ambushing him from the treetops, spitting a mouthful of acorns at his friend's head. Dax is momentarily frightened, then irritated by Weaver's behavior. Weaver notes that Dax might be crabby due to their recent loss of supplies, and then the two of them go to do a ceremony over a recently killed rabbit. Weaver reflects on how he likes the way their life is right now and hopes it doesn't change anytime soon.
ivy #43: we should matchTheresa comes bearing good news: she got her job. She also is dressed differently and wants Melanie's help cutting her hair. Theresa trims Melanie's bangs in return, and when Ivy steals the mirror to gaze at herself, she realizes she no longer has bangs and wants them because Melanie has them. She freaks out over looking "scary" without her bangs until Theresa cuts them for her, and she's happy again.
dax #32: surprise attackDax and Weaver are relaxing before dinner plans when a stranger approaches from the direction of the ocean. Unsure of what to do, the pair hides in the forest, only to see the stranger examining their cave. Weaver won't stand for this and attacks the newcomer, putting his wings around his eyes so he can't see while Dax questions him and tells him to leave. Instead of running, though, the man turns around for a look at his attackers, which makes Dax curious.
ivy #44: gimmeIvy shows us her "dropping" game (wherein she amuses herself falling from the sky and catching herself, at one point attracting the attention of people looking out a window). Then, she discovers that Melanie is on the building wearing TWO necklaces instead of the usual one, and she wants to wear one of them. She is not satisfied with one and demands the other one, but Melanie puts her in her place.
weaver #29: a little big talkWeaver decides the stranger on their property needs to be intimidated, and with Dax's help they establish that they are in control. The new guy introduces himself as Alix, but also suggests he isn't human, which Weaver believes to be an offensive lie designed to get in their good graces. He points his sword at Alix's face and tells him he doesn't want to be involved with them.
ivy #45: bigger than anythingOn a hot day, Theresa and Melanie discuss their respective depressing issues, but Ivy decides all they need is a nice breeze to cheer them up. She tries to make wind for the first time and is surprised and delighted that she can do it, but she mistakenly pushes her friends over while trying to push the air, and regrets doing so.
meri lin #96: old newsMeri Lin finds a headline on a tabloid that sounds like it could be about her daughter, so she reads the content and thinks either someone witnessed and photographed her daughter flying or this is a huge coincidence. She is reassured by the dates in the article that her baby was still fine more than a month after she went missing, and this gives hope to both her and Fred.
ivy #46: do somethingMelanie unexpectedly brings her new friend Tonya to the roof hangout, surprising Ivy and making her wary. Melanie insists that Ivy do telekinetic performances to back up the claims she'd made to Tonya, but Ivy has learned to be cautious around strangers, which leads Melanie to first threatening then bribing Ivy to perform. She's finally convinced to demonstrate flying after Melanie gives her her coveted blue necklace.
dax #33: by the rulesDax takes Weaver's sword away and claims that threatening the stranger with it was enough to tarnish it, requiring purification of the sword through burial for three days. Weaver protests this, and Dax's treatment of him toward the stranger, and the two bicker about how to treat him. Eventually Weaver consents to have a civil conversation with Alix, but Dax feels guilty about the way he treated Weaver to get to that point.
ivy #47: what do you call it?Ivy does nothing in this issue besides rejoice over her necklaces and dig out a bag of marshmallows to munch on, but Melanie and her new friend Tonya are busy. Tonya asks questions about the baby; the two girls decide to name her "Trixie the Pixie" based on Tonya's recommendation, and the two scurry off to acquire camping equipment so they can cook hot meals on the roof.
meri lin #97: my heartMeri Lin and Fred eat dinner out to celebrate their Amanda news, and when they're home looking at photos, Fred acknowledges that he can now think of his daughter without unbearable sadness. Their joy turns into an intimate moment and Meri Lin reflects on her happiness at having him back.
ivy #48: can'tMelanie enlists Theresa's help in learning to use the camping stove that she and Tonya acquired. Theresa asks why Melanie even told Tonya about the baby, and gets her answer, then leaves Melanie alone to deal with setting up the tent they got. After figuring it out, she realizes she can't affix it to the ground with stakes without Ivy's help, and for her part, the baby is puzzled as to why she can push hard enough to do this while Melanie can't.
weaver #30: a bold questionAfter having calmed down enough to listen to what Alix has to say, Weaver discovers that this newcomer wishes to be trained on how to live the way he and Dax do. They make a deal that Alix will catch fish for them that night in exchange for some of their food and a place to sleep, but Alix also reveals that he will be greatly aided in his fishing by his ability to breathe underwater. Weaver is unsure of whether Alix is telling the truth.
ivy #49: the way it isIvy, still disturbed by her realization that Melanie can't "push" like she can, withdraws into herself, trying to sort through her feelings about it. She rather clearly asks Melanie to demonstrate flying for her--just to make sure--and receives an exasperated "I can't!" from her friend. Too confused to hang around any longer, Ivy retreats to the sky, and though she goes high enough that the air feels very cold, she realizes that no one will be coming to warm her up.
dax #34: what's your story? After Weaver leaves to pick apples, Dax and Alix find out each other's life stories, and Dax learns about Alix's failed quest to live in the ocean. Dax also philosophizes about why he and Weaver have different attitudes toward an invader, and he offers to teach Alix how to hunt.
ivy #50: they fly tooIvy realizes that birds and bugs fly, though not at all like she does. She thinks about why being in the sky alone makes her sad.
adele #60: theory and practiceAdele thinks more about theoretical knowledge being ultimately useless in her situation, and determines that she will never be a good teacher of the future-seeing arts if she doesn't learn to practice her skills in context. While walking back toward the library, she has an epiphany and realizes she doesn't have to find a place in human society in order to use her skills to benefit a group; instead, she will look for a place with other folks outside society, and will bide her time until her opening comes.
ivy #51: it's called lostWhile looking for a place to sleep, Ivy happens upon an apartment and slides in through one of the windows. The cooler temperature indoors prompts her to realize she has to use the bathroom, and she is determined to get to a toilet in order to earn "big girl pants." Upon finding the residents of the apartment and demanding the potty, they react with surprise and dismay, but they let her use the toilet and determine that she must be a missing child. When asked for the whereabouts of her mommy and daddy, she vaguely recognizes those words but can't remember why.
weaver #31: for the worldAfter returning to the base with apples, Weaver has to sit and listen to Alix and Dax talk animatedly, and he feels uncomfortable thinking Dax likes the stranger so much. After Alix runs off to catch a fish to share, Weaver has a word with Dax and finds himself reassured that he isn't being replaced.
ivy #52: except usIvy is denied a place to sleep because one of the apartment residents is too afraid to seem suspicious to the police. (He has apparently been in trouble with the law before, and fears getting involved.) Instead of helping Ivy, the female apartment resident obeys the male resident's request and sends her out of their apartment lobby instead of giving her any help. She flies away not terribly upset, but a little confused about why they didn't help her.
meri lin #98: expectationMeri Lin reflects on her last couple of months trying to track down information about Amanda based on the tabloid article. Though ultimately their efforts fail, she and Fred are still in a much better place than they were before the news. However, Meri Lin feels a very weird anticipatory itch, and though she at first misinterprets her unexplainable feeling to an expectation for Amanda's return, she realizes that actually she might be anticipating a different kind of arrival. A pregnancy test confirms: Meri Lin is pregnant with her second child.
ivy #53: more than i want herIvy spends several days enjoying the night sky and wandering about like a true vagabond, and she succeeds in using the potty several times. This makes her want to tell Melanie about it, so when she sees a clue that she is close to the building again, she decides to go there and see if Melanie is there. She's not willing to wait too long, though, because she cares about flying at night more than she cares about seeing Melanie.
dax #35: bonding experienceOver a campfire, Dax subtly encourages Weaver and Alix to get along by suggesting storytelling, and hopes that the three of them can eventually trust each other.
ivy #54: that's not flyingWhen Melanie finally arrives on the rooftop and has a joyful reunion with Ivy, the baby is intrigued by the way Melanie jumped over the wall. She thinks it resembles flying too much to be something else, though after a few demonstrations she realizes jumping is different from flying. She tries to figure out how to jump, completely clueless as to how to make her body execute upward motion. Melanie thinks it's cute and proceeds to fix SpaghettiOs for dinner.
meri lin #99: his sister's shadowMeri Lin and Fred bask in the news of their next child, and they also chew on the gritty realities they face. Meri Lin hopes to avoid making their baby live "in the shadow" of the missing Amanda, and expresses her desires to Fred, but in so doing she repeatedly refers to the baby as "he." When this is pointed out, Meri Lin panics, since she knows she's thinking of the baby as a boy but doesn't know why, and doesn't want this pregnancy to culminate in a child who follows in Amanda's footsteps. She wonders if denial of her perceptions and making different choices will lead to a different outcome in her son's case.
ivy #55: why should i?Melanie gives Ivy a bath with a hose, and then instead of accepting a new diaper, Ivy insists on showing Melanie how she can use the potty, only to find that she'd been skipping the wiping step. Melanie guides her and is surprised to find she even does this without using her hands, and Melanie's suggestion that she SHOULD use her hands confuses Ivy. Later, after she's ecstatic from receiving her big girl pants, Melanie points out that Ivy DOES use her hands when she's eating, which is something she does without knowing why. . . .
weaver #32: territorialWeaver lets Alix put his bag in the cave and basically tries to get used to the idea of sharing space with him, but he makes it clear where he doesn't want Alix to go or what he doesn't want him to touch. The two of them also get to see what belongings each other has.
ivy #56: orphans with youMelanie shows Ivy the inside of her tent, and she doesn't like it because it's too small inside and makes her feel yucky. Melanie does some sudden soul-searching and realizes she'd rather stay and take care of the baby all day instead of going home or going to school. Seeming strangely desperate, Melanie decides to run away from home, and tells Ivy to just hang out and wait for her while she goes home one last time to get some things.
dax #36: central to lifeDax and Weaver discuss Alix's presence in their lives and decide he will be permitted to learn survival techniques from them, but that they do not intend to deliberately instruct him on their spiritual beliefs.
ivy #57: nothing to be sad aboutIvy comes down from night flying to find Melanie is not there. In the morning, though, she does show up; however, she seems subdued. Ivy doesn't know what she's sad about, but Melanie explains by apologizing for not returning the night before. She ended up being too scared to run away from home, she admits. Ivy is oblivious to Melanie's complicated feelings, though, and just offers her hugs and cereal while thinking about going to the playground.
weaver #33: not like youWeaver teaches Alix how to gather nuts, but he doesn't appreciate that Alix is so forward with his questions, and he gets angry when Alix suggests they have certain things in common. Weaver doesn't want to be seen as similar to Alix.
ivy #58: pretend scaryWhile waiting for Theresa at the playground, Ivy and Melanie get interrupted by a passing policeman who thinks Melanie is probably truant (rightfully so), and Melanie urges Ivy to help them escape. She finds doing so enjoyable. When they return to the playground later, Theresa finds them and Melanie asks for advice on how to run away from home. Theresa asks for the full story on Melanie's motivation, and vows to determine whether Melanie needs an intervention.
dax #37: without a fightAlix comes to Dax to ask for mediation since Weaver is "being a jerk" to him. Dax refuses to make it easier for him, though, since he believes Weaver is reacting with hostility only because Alix remains separate from nature in philosophy. He suggests to Alix that Weaver will accept him only when he deserves it, and that he should WANT his journey to be difficult if it is to be worth anything.
ivy #59: if it does get that badMelanie and Theresa have a heart-to-heart about Melanie's home situation, and they collectively decide that an intervention isn't really appropriate at this stage. If she needs help, though, Theresa makes sure Melanie knows she can ask. Meanwhile, Ivy's busy digging up the playground, and she enjoys playing with the dirt with Melanie.
meri lin #100: nothing to proveMeri Lin and Fred discuss names for the new baby and also puzzle over why Meri Lin has such a strong feeling that it's going to be a boy. Fred seems to accept Meri Lin's explanation, which is a pleasant surprise for Meri Lin and makes her feel like she has an ally rather than a person who's demanding answers she doesn't have.
ivy #60: smile for the cameraAfter flying around in the dark by herself, Ivy suddenly wants an orange but is dismayed to find the fruit stand locked up at night. She falls asleep next to it, and when the owner, Keith, comes to open up, he is delighted to discover her waiting for him. He gives her oranges and calls Ernie, who comes over with a rented videocamera and tapes Ivy flying, apparently intending to show the tape to someone named Steph as photographic evidence of her existence. (Ivy is of course oblivous and just wants to know what the funny machine is for.)
weaver #34: just be youAfter consulting with Dax, Alix comes to Weaver suspiciously pledging to be more in tune with nature, and so Weaver finds it preposterous and tells him to just be himself. They have a discussion about how Alix should be acting, and Weaver just wants to get to know him for who he is, not who he's pretending to be. He admits that he just doesn't particularly like change, and that Alix and he may never get along, but that swearing to be in tune with nature has no meaning. Weaver makes a mental note to talk to Dax about their encounter, because he finds it a little disturbing and manipulative.
ivy #61: documentaryIvy decides she wants to examine the mysterious camera, and accidentally hurts Ernie while taking it away from him, but she's oblivious to the whole situation and is easily distracted by colored pencils. Keith and Ernie return to documenting her on film, but she begins to take interest in their attention and manages to coax Ernie into coloring with her. (He gives in because he's a little nervous about what might happen if she doesn't get her way.)
adele #61: may none followAfter arriving back in the library and doing some research, Adele ends up having a dream that tells her sometime soon she'll be taking a train to another part of the country. To raise money for this she acquires half the winnings from a scratch-off ticket after convincing a drug-using passerby to buy it for her. Disturbed by the fact that she seems to have funded his drug-dealing aspirations by splitting the winnings, she ponders whether she would have done it if she'd known ahead of time, and hopes for the man to be influential on no one.
ivy #62: keep the kidAfter deciding they have enough superbaby footage, Keith calls the mysterious contact Steph and asks for advice on what to do now that they have their proof. Keith reports back to Ernie (who is coloring with Ivy) that Steph would like the videotape sent to her and expects them to just keep Ivy until she decides to come see for herself (and that only if the video evidence seems compelling). The men are understandably skeptical that they have the resources to keep such a child in one place, but they're freed of that immediate responsibility because in the meantime Ivy has become a little frustrated with coloring and has decided to just ditch them. She tells herself she'll come back when she wants more oranges and colors.
dax #38: what you can doAlix offers up his feelings on being essentially between worlds where he fits in with no one, and Weaver surprises Dax by relating to him on several points. Dax is puzzled to hear his friends discussing how they'd change themselves, and he tries to get them to be positive about what they can do rather than focus on what opportunities their conditions prevent.
ivy #63: in touchTheresa comes to the building home, bringing cupcakes. She gives them to the girls and Ivy is only interested in eating hers (and Melanie's), but Theresa has bad news: her job is allowing a transfer to another city, which is the best thing that could happen for Theresa's future except that it means she'll have to leave Ivy and Melanie. She insists that Melanie has things under control without her and that Ivy's even started to talk in her accent, but Melanie still feels insecure about being left without Theresa's help, and they agree to stay in touch with letters.
weaver #35: a lot colderWeaver settles into a critical teaching style when instructing Alix on matters of survival, perplexed as to how Dax manages to keep his patience. He notices that Alix complains a lot, and when they begin to discuss preparedness for winter, Alix demands to know why Dax and Weaver don't know anything about preserving furs. Since Weaver matter-of-factly explains that they probably wouldn't have thought of such a thing since they have their own fur, Alix decides he'll go back to the city and find materials and instructions on how to preserve fur for their winter use.
ivy #64: only when you listenMelanie has cooked up a goodbye party for Theresa, and has taught Ivy to serve cookies. She's very proud of her role in the festivities, but she wants to be the one to pour the drinks too and Melanie tries to stop her because that was HER job. Theresa advises Melanie not to interfere, but Melanie insists that Ivy needs discipline, so Theresa suggests Melanie respond to bad behavior by taking away something she can control. She does so by leaving, which throws Ivy into confusion about what she could have done wrong and whether she should just make Melanie come back.
dax #39: something i decidedWeaver expresses happiness at Alix's being temporarily absent, which makes Dax worry that he's made his best friend miserable by arranging the terms to let Alix stay. But he's reassured somewhat when Weaver insists he doesn't hate Alix and doesn't want Dax to make him leave. They joke about what they do wish he would change, though.
ivy #65: let her beAnnoyed that Melanie left the tea party, Ivy flies after her and floats her right back into her seat, then expects the tea party to resume like normal. However, Melanie's not acting normal because she's very scared now that she can't get away, and Theresa has to figure out a way to get Ivy to leave her alone. Unfortunately, pushing the right buttons to get Ivy to feel bad makes her spiral into a teary self-doubt, and she just doesn't know what to do with herself when Melanie chooses to run angrily away instead of giving her a hug good-bye. . . .
