TitleSynopsis
ivy #1: bigNow taking over to narrate her own comics, Baby Amanda begins being named in the comic as narrator Ivy, and in her first adventure she goes on her first lengthy outdoor flight. Ivy delights in her freedom to keep moving up without a ceiling, but when she gets high enough the winds make her feel disoriented, and she scrambles to fly back to the ground so the "big" doesn't get her. The reasoning behind identifying Amanda as Ivy is explained in an attached document.
ivy #2: wetIvy takes her clothes and diaper off like she always did at home, and after some distress regarding what to do about being "stinky," she finds a fountain and takes a bath in it. A patrolman comes upon her and hopes to help her, but Ivy hears his voice and thinks it's her father. When he sees her flying, his expression of fear frightens her right back, and she flies away again.
ivy #3: windowsIvy discovers windows occasionally contain people, and amuses herself looking at them until she decides to pursue food. After being dissatisfied with a stolen bite of muffin, she spots a refrigerator in someone's house and lets herself in. The issue ends as she's deciding to go check out some voices.
ivy #4: pleaseHaving ventured into a random apartment's kitchen, Ivy encounters its residents, in front of whom she feels compelled to "behave" like she normally did at home when it was food time. The older couple inside seems sympathetic--especially when she has an accident on the floor and cries--but they quickly discover her secret upon picking her up because she seems suspiciously light. The couple now thinks they've found some kind of fairy, but Ivy doesn't understand their language and tries to behave in a way that she thinks will make them feed her and take care of her.
ivy #5: the best placeLittle Ivy gets the two things she wanted--food and a nap--as the couple who unwittingly became her guardians take stock of her weirdness and try to figure out how to deal with her. Marty is suspicious and frightened, and Nora is confused but very sympathetic because she is a baby. Ivy just wants them to shut up and let her sleep.
ivy #6: hot stuffIvy wakes up while her observers are still sleeping, and proceeds to try to find breakfast for herself. She gets curious about a coffeepot and tries to play with it, but it's very hot and startles her into dropping it. Marty comes in and starts talking to her like she understands him, asking her to leave him and his wife alone, and she gets angry at the lack of sympathy and pushes him down before retreating out the window.
ivy #7: too littleIvy flies around in search of a place to rest and have fun, and she discovers a playground, where she is able to ride the merry-go-round with other kids . . . until they make her sad by all running to their parents when playtime is over. A lone child approaches her and seems friendly, and after the girl offers her cookies and takes turns with her pushing the merry-go-round, Ivy starts to trust her: This is the first appearance of Melanie.
ivy #8: happy yellingIvy's new friend Melanie pushes her on the swings, but when the older girl imitates flying by swinging lying on her belly in the swing, she can't hold her excitement down and pulls a "me too." Melanie is understandably shocked by seeing a flying baby, but unlike all the other strangers Ivy has met so far, Melanie appears to want to share the experience instead of running away from it. She gets Ivy to float her into the air, and Ivy is delighted to have a friend who likes flying even though she is quite loud about it.
ivy #9: big sisterIvy's new friend Melanie doesn't much like flying high. She distracts Ivy and angers her by badgering her about the way she says her L's, and soon ends up freaking out when Ivy decides to do whatever she wants. But Ivy doesn't like when Melanie gets scared, so she takes her to the ground and gives her the cookies. Unfortunately, Melanie ended up getting so scared that she wet her pants, so the two decide to embark upon a quest for new pants (with Melanie promising to teach Ivy how to "nick stuff").
ivy #10: big girl pantsWhile lifting a pair of pants for herself, Melanie tries to teach Ivy how to get away with stealing stuff from stores and ends up getting caught herself. Ivy figures out that her friend wants to escape and helps her, and Melanie is impressed and pleased with this naïve but powerful baby.
ivy #11: throwed awayIvy and Melanie are just having fun on the playground again when Melanie's sister's friend arrives and calls her away from playtime. Melanie doesn't seem to realize why Ivy isn't fine with being left behind, and tells her she should just go find a tree since fairies live outside. Ivy doesn't know what to do about being abandoned like this and sits down to cry instead of taking any action.
ivy #12: not fairIvy's crying attracts a homeless woman who takes her to the shelter to eat some rice. She gets a lot of attention from the other homeless ladies and gets so irritated (when one of them is interested in the novelty her ears present) that she pushes her off the cot, and the ladies are suddenly scared of her and leave her alone. She bursts into tears and won't stop crying until one of the shelter managers demands that someone watch the child, and another homeless lady who claims to be good with kids comes forward to give Ivy a cookie. Ivy has learned that not everyone who gives her food is nice, so she remains wary.
ivy #13: happy and sadAfter getting cleaned up and put to bed by the nice homeless woman, Ivy has weird dreams in which her mother and father appear, and also her mother blends into Melanie who throws her away again. She wakes up trying to catch her and freaks out her unsuspecting guardian by flying, but the woman recovers quickly and invites Ivy back to cuddle with her. Ivy's emotions are too complicated for her to make sense of at that point, and she smiles and cries at the same time.
ivy #14: the handsThe woman who is watching Ivy gets her ready to leave the shelter, after which they venture forth. Ivy thinks about Melanie (calling her "Mennie") while the caretaker wonders aloud what she's going to do with Ivy. But then she spots the playground where she played the day before and flies off to play, coaxing the homeless woman to come push her on the swing. Soon enough Melanie actually does appear--Ivy is overjoyed!--and the woman introduces herself as Theresa while trying to find out more about Ivy from Melanie.
ivy #15: the happiest feelingMelanie and Theresa get to talking about baby Ivy and what their responsibilities are. Melanie is just eager to show Theresa the baby's "magic tricks" and refuses to address her by name. It's clear Theresa is trying to grasp the enormity of this situation, but baby Ivy is disappointed that her friends are talking instead of playing with her. She tries to make them play.
ivy #16: basic thingsTheresa responds to Melanie's sarcasm by writing her name on Melanie's hand with a marker so she won't forget it. Ivy is interested in the marker and steals it from them, and Theresa and Melanie discuss what babies need and what Melanie can do to assume the responsibility of helping this baby as much as she can. Theresa ends up writing a checklist on Melanie's arm with another marker.
ivy #17: learn by watchingAfter Ivy sheds her diaper, Theresa and Melanie fight over who will clean her up, and Theresa attempts to make Melanie feel silly for not being mature enough to handle gross things parents have to deal with when they have babies. Melanie agrees that she'd be happier taking care of Ivy if she was potty trained, so they decide to try their luck on getting her to go on the potty.
ivy #18: water soundsTheresa has a smashing success teaching Ivy to go on the potty, though she finds it very amusing that the baby "hovered" while she did her business. Ivy feels like the whole thing was a really excellent game, and Melanie is not happy with being spied on while doing her own business. At the end of the comic the toilet flushing scares the baby.
ivy #19: no more cryingWhile Ivy tries her best to play with water (and gets frustrated), Melanie and Theresa talk about why Theresa has to run off to an appointment. We get some history of why Theresa is homeless and how it happened and she reveals that she has untreated epilepsy. When she leaves, Melanie is stuck with Ivy who is crying due to accidentally soaking herself. She panics and tries to give up on taking care of her because she doesn't feel up to the job on her own, but Ivy makes it clear that she needs her, which makes Melanie realize she's all this poor baby has.
ivy #20: big storeIvy and Melanie go shopping--well, really, they go on a stealing expedition in a large multi-purpose retail store. Ivy just follows Melanie's instructions on getting out the window with all their stolen baby supplies tied up in a blanket, and Melanie sets off with Ivy on a quest to find a place for her to live. Ivy doesn't really know what's going on but all she cares about at the moment is not having Melanie leave her.
ivy #21: in chargeMelanie gets inspired to make the new rooftop "home" into something of a clubhouse, and directs Ivy around town to keep picking up new items for their place. By the end of the adventure, Ivy is hungry but content to let Melanie tell her what to do. Finally Melanie remembers to feed her and she has never been so happy to see applesauce.
ivy #22: anything i wantIvy gets tired after a meal and Melanie tucks her into her "bed": a laundry basket with a couple pillows. Ivy is nervous about Melanie leaving, but is too tired to do anything about it. When she wakes up alone in the middle of the night, she panics briefly before realizing she can actually take care of her own immediate needs, and she vows to be good until Melanie gets back.
ivy #23: for big girlsIvy deals with her disorientation on top of the building at night until she feels tired again, and in the morning things look different. She's not entirely comfortable alone, but she's able to enjoy herself pretending that her laundry basket bed is a car until Melanie arrives and greets her, having worried during the night. Ivy wonders what the rules are for how she has to act to bring the people she wants to her.
ivy #24: i'll let herIvy's quite pleased that Melanie's there to share the day with her until her idea of fun is to brush the baby's hair (which is uncomfortable), followed by exclaiming over her various unusual features while examining her at close range and claiming she looks like a cartoon. Oh well; at least she got a cute ponytail out of it.
ivy #25: being heldMelanie takes Ivy to the playground again and they find Theresa. Melanie unexpectedly has a breakdown about being scared of taking care of Ivy, so Theresa tries to comfort her, which causes Ivy to feel ignored and demand attention also. Theresa determines that Melanie's childcare choices are not up to her standards, and demands to be taken to the girls' "clubhouse."
ivy #26: home sweet homeMelanie wakes Ivy up when they get to the "home" building, and Theresa is startled when waking up makes the baby instinctively lighten herself. Melanie badgers her into providing the ride up to the roof (and quells the baby's cranky screams with the promise of her "Kitty"), and Theresa opts to climb the stairs. When Theresa sees how much stolen merchandise Melanie has taken to furnish the "clubhouse," she gets a lecture on morals and is "threatened" with church. They plan to visit Theresa's pastor friend, also with the ulterior motive that he may agree to let Ivy stay in one of the spare rooms. During the discussion, Ivy's fallen asleep, content with her Kitty.
ivy #27: can't make meTheresa is denied access to any free church rooms to keep the baby in since the pastor won't take responsibility for unsupervised children. Melanie and Theresa fight about this, and Ivy is angered that her wish for snacktime is being ignored, so she decides she means business and flies away. Theresa demands that Melanie stay for the sermon, and chases the baby down to give her a granola bar (after which she calms down). But Ivy has realized that these two people are actually with her on HER terms, and that she can leave in search of whatever she wants anytime she wants. They can't make her be good, and she's finally starting to realize it. . . .
ivy #28: up hereIvy gets fed up with Theresa and Melanie arguing about the best way to earn money, so she flies away in a huff. She finds a cake she wants and ends up breaking the window trying to get it. She flies away with her prize, thinking she likes it that no one follows her when she goes up high.
ivy #29: what's supposed to happenIvy gets sticky from her cake, falls asleep in a restaurant, and is discovered by wait staff who contact the police about a lost child. Ivy gets fed chicken nuggets, but she gets fed up with having her face wiped and her ears touched, so she loses her temper and escapes, taking the chicken nuggets with her.
ivy #30: if they yellIvy flies around, a little distraught and thirsty, but she finally hears Melanie calling from the rooftop she's been looking for! After a joyful reunion, Melanie starts reprimanding Ivy like an adult, telling her not to run away again, but Ivy is having none of that, and puts Melanie in her place (but not without a kind gesture afterwards!).
ivy #31: far awayIvy is feeling rather saucy and ends up making Melanie a bit sour as she demands praise for her "artwork." (When she doesn't get it, she pretends her stuffed cat said it was a "pitty pitcher.") After Melanie makes sure she's okay for the night, Ivy goes to sleep happy in her laundry basket, and in the morning she finds herself a bit scared to venture forward from the building since she lost it the last time. She devises a way to avoid losing her "home" by telekinetically holding onto her kitty toy while she flies away; even though she goes a significant distance away from Kitty, she can sense where he is, though it's a weird experience for her to handle something so far away from herself. She wonders how far she can go without losing her remote awareness of the plush toy.
ivy #32: if i let goIvy reaches her limit on being able to hold her toy while flying away, so she has to choose between returning or losing her remote sense of the way to her home. She decides she'll spend the day within her range so she can always find the building again, and proceeds to steal an orange (while frightening the fruit stand owner) and rip up a flower bed. Mysteriously, she senses that her toy spontaneously moved, so she flies up to check it out only to find that Melanie is back and had tried to pick her stuffed animal up. Melanie observes that Ivy is sticky and dirty, and decides she needs a bath. Ivy is very excited about that idea.
ivy #33: a little bit something elseMelanie tries to give Ivy a bath in a public fountain, but the baby is a lot more interested in convincing Melanie to come bathe with her. Not understanding privacy issues, she attempts to "help" Melanie undress for the bath, which makes Melanie freak out and slap her across the face. Stunned by this treatment, Ivy doesn't cry or get angry; she just seeks solace and hugs Melanie without understanding any of what she's yelling about. Things go back to normal and Ivy sits still to let Melanie shampoo her hair, but she's left feeling very unsettled about letting herself be bossed around, and finds herself wondering why she didn't hit Melanie back.
ivy #34: look at meTheresa helps Melanie figure out Ivy's diapers and gives her some discipline advice. Meanwhile, Ivy would really like Theresa's undivided attention, and begins to get frustrated that Theresa keeps talking to Melanie. She feels she needs to do something to claim the spotlight, but is mainly just frustrated that Theresa doesn't automatically know what she wants.
ivy #35: something to sayIvy demands Theresa's attention and gets some very basic conversation out of her, but Melanie keeps interrupting, which causes Ivy to lose her temper and "kidnap" Theresa, flying her up to the next level of the building. Melanie seems angry and leaves--claiming not to care, of course--and Ivy tries to figure out why Theresa had such a strange reaction to flying and whether walking down stairs might be more fun than flying.
ivy #36: in good handsWhile playing on the stairs, Ivy and Theresa get yelled at by a woman on the street who thinks Ivy is in danger because she looks so precarious on the stairs. Theresa protects her and takes her for a last meal before heading to the shelter for the night. There, Ivy is unpleasantly surprised to re-encounter a woman who thought she was a "devil-baby" last time she was there, and Theresa has to comfort her. She feels unsettled as she falls asleep.
ivy #37: they're not meanIvy decides she feels cooped up the morning after spending the night with Theresa in the shelter, so she flies around until she wants breakfast. Getting an orange from the same stand as she did last time attracts the attention of the merchant a second time, but this time he wishes to draw her in and keep her around until another person can meet her and see her do her "magic." He accomplishes this by keeping Ivy busy with cookies and drawing paper, and Ivy isn't sure whether she trusts these men or not.
ivy #38: a bigger mysteryIvy discovers she can play with the boxes of produce in Keith's shop, and she whizzes around doing so while the two men discuss whether they think she's a magical creature or a human with superpowers.
ivy #39: no one to showThe guys who have been discussing Ivy's status as a human or a magical creature continue to debate what should be done with her, but she is oblivious and leaves. She spends the day having fun--distributing her drawings inside windows, having drinks with her stuffed kitty, and flying around having adventures. Unfortunately the day ends in a frightening way--Ivy is awoken by a thunderstorm and is caught in the middle of it. But Melanie, surprisingly, shows up and rescues her.
ivy #40: it made her stayContinuing her "rescue," Melanie instructs Ivy to break a lock so they can get into a store after hours and use the supplies to get dry and comfortable. Ivy can't seem to help crying even though the crisis has passed, but this time her behavior doesn't spook Melanie . . . it only draws her in. Melanie and Ivy sleep in a beanbag chair in stolen pajamas, and Melanie ponders aloud how taking care of Ivy is making her want to have her own kids someday.
ivy #41: to save us allAfter sleeping in the store overnight, Melanie and Ivy escape without being seen and go back to their rooftop. Ivy is scared at the memory of the last time she was there and Melanie comforts her, which is when Theresa shows up again. She expresses disappointment that Melanie is cutting school and leaving home at odd hours to take care of Ivy, and then she reveals that she is working on a plan that will lead to her getting a job, a residence, and her children back if all goes well. Once that happens, she promises to take Ivy in, but until then she wants Melanie to "coast". . . .
ivy #42: my favorite timeIvy's first real "montage" episode details her emerging routine and her four "times" ("Mennie Time," "Learning Time," "I Want Time," and "Sleeping Time"), and how each one appears to be her favorite. (She does not appear to notice the contradiction.)
ivy #43: we should matchTheresa comes bearing good news: she got her job. She also is dressed differently and wants Melanie's help cutting her hair. Theresa trims Melanie's bangs in return, and when Ivy steals the mirror to gaze at herself, she realizes she no longer has bangs and wants them because Melanie has them. She freaks out over looking "scary" without her bangs until Theresa cuts them for her, and she's happy again.
ivy #44: gimmeIvy shows us her "dropping" game (wherein she amuses herself falling from the sky and catching herself, at one point attracting the attention of people looking out a window). Then, she discovers that Melanie is on the building wearing TWO necklaces instead of the usual one, and she wants to wear one of them. She is not satisfied with one and demands the other one, but Melanie puts her in her place.
ivy #45: bigger than anythingOn a hot day, Theresa and Melanie discuss their respective depressing issues, but Ivy decides all they need is a nice breeze to cheer them up. She tries to make wind for the first time and is surprised and delighted that she can do it, but she mistakenly pushes her friends over while trying to push the air, and regrets doing so.
ivy #46: do somethingMelanie unexpectedly brings her new friend Tonya to the roof hangout, surprising Ivy and making her wary. Melanie insists that Ivy do telekinetic performances to back up the claims she'd made to Tonya, but Ivy has learned to be cautious around strangers, which leads Melanie to first threatening then bribing Ivy to perform. She's finally convinced to demonstrate flying after Melanie gives her her coveted blue necklace.
ivy #47: what do you call it?Ivy does nothing in this issue besides rejoice over her necklaces and dig out a bag of marshmallows to munch on, but Melanie and her new friend Tonya are busy. Tonya asks questions about the baby; the two girls decide to name her "Trixie the Pixie" based on Tonya's recommendation, and the two scurry off to acquire camping equipment so they can cook hot meals on the roof.
ivy #48: can'tMelanie enlists Theresa's help in learning to use the camping stove that she and Tonya acquired. Theresa asks why Melanie even told Tonya about the baby, and gets her answer, then leaves Melanie alone to deal with setting up the tent they got. After figuring it out, she realizes she can't affix it to the ground with stakes without Ivy's help, and for her part, the baby is puzzled as to why she can push hard enough to do this while Melanie can't.
ivy #49: the way it isIvy, still disturbed by her realization that Melanie can't "push" like she can, withdraws into herself, trying to sort through her feelings about it. She rather clearly asks Melanie to demonstrate flying for her--just to make sure--and receives an exasperated "I can't!" from her friend. Too confused to hang around any longer, Ivy retreats to the sky, and though she goes high enough that the air feels very cold, she realizes that no one will be coming to warm her up.
ivy #50: they fly tooIvy realizes that birds and bugs fly, though not at all like she does. She thinks about why being in the sky alone makes her sad.
ivy #51: it's called lostWhile looking for a place to sleep, Ivy happens upon an apartment and slides in through one of the windows. The cooler temperature indoors prompts her to realize she has to use the bathroom, and she is determined to get to a toilet in order to earn "big girl pants." Upon finding the residents of the apartment and demanding the potty, they react with surprise and dismay, but they let her use the toilet and determine that she must be a missing child. When asked for the whereabouts of her mommy and daddy, she vaguely recognizes those words but can't remember why.
ivy #52: except usIvy is denied a place to sleep because one of the apartment residents is too afraid to seem suspicious to the police. (He has apparently been in trouble with the law before, and fears getting involved.) Instead of helping Ivy, the female apartment resident obeys the male resident's request and sends her out of their apartment lobby instead of giving her any help. She flies away not terribly upset, but a little confused about why they didn't help her.
ivy #53: more than i want herIvy spends several days enjoying the night sky and wandering about like a true vagabond, and she succeeds in using the potty several times. This makes her want to tell Melanie about it, so when she sees a clue that she is close to the building again, she decides to go there and see if Melanie is there. She's not willing to wait too long, though, because she cares about flying at night more than she cares about seeing Melanie.
ivy #54: that's not flyingWhen Melanie finally arrives on the rooftop and has a joyful reunion with Ivy, the baby is intrigued by the way Melanie jumped over the wall. She thinks it resembles flying too much to be something else, though after a few demonstrations she realizes jumping is different from flying. She tries to figure out how to jump, completely clueless as to how to make her body execute upward motion. Melanie thinks it's cute and proceeds to fix SpaghettiOs for dinner.
ivy #55: why should i?Melanie gives Ivy a bath with a hose, and then instead of accepting a new diaper, Ivy insists on showing Melanie how she can use the potty, only to find that she'd been skipping the wiping step. Melanie guides her and is surprised to find she even does this without using her hands, and Melanie's suggestion that she SHOULD use her hands confuses Ivy. Later, after she's ecstatic from receiving her big girl pants, Melanie points out that Ivy DOES use her hands when she's eating, which is something she does without knowing why. . . .
ivy #56: orphans with youMelanie shows Ivy the inside of her tent, and she doesn't like it because it's too small inside and makes her feel yucky. Melanie does some sudden soul-searching and realizes she'd rather stay and take care of the baby all day instead of going home or going to school. Seeming strangely desperate, Melanie decides to run away from home, and tells Ivy to just hang out and wait for her while she goes home one last time to get some things.
ivy #57: nothing to be sad aboutIvy comes down from night flying to find Melanie is not there. In the morning, though, she does show up; however, she seems subdued. Ivy doesn't know what she's sad about, but Melanie explains by apologizing for not returning the night before. She ended up being too scared to run away from home, she admits. Ivy is oblivious to Melanie's complicated feelings, though, and just offers her hugs and cereal while thinking about going to the playground.
ivy #58: pretend scaryWhile waiting for Theresa at the playground, Ivy and Melanie get interrupted by a passing policeman who thinks Melanie is probably truant (rightfully so), and Melanie urges Ivy to help them escape. She finds doing so enjoyable. When they return to the playground later, Theresa finds them and Melanie asks for advice on how to run away from home. Theresa asks for the full story on Melanie's motivation, and vows to determine whether Melanie needs an intervention.
ivy #59: if it does get that badMelanie and Theresa have a heart-to-heart about Melanie's home situation, and they collectively decide that an intervention isn't really appropriate at this stage. If she needs help, though, Theresa makes sure Melanie knows she can ask. Meanwhile, Ivy's busy digging up the playground, and she enjoys playing with the dirt with Melanie.
ivy #60: smile for the cameraAfter flying around in the dark by herself, Ivy suddenly wants an orange but is dismayed to find the fruit stand locked up at night. She falls asleep next to it, and when the owner, Keith, comes to open up, he is delighted to discover her waiting for him. He gives her oranges and calls Ernie, who comes over with a rented videocamera and tapes Ivy flying, apparently intending to show the tape to someone named Steph as photographic evidence of her existence. (Ivy is of course oblivous and just wants to know what the funny machine is for.)
ivy #61: documentaryIvy decides she wants to examine the mysterious camera, and accidentally hurts Ernie while taking it away from him, but she's oblivious to the whole situation and is easily distracted by colored pencils. Keith and Ernie return to documenting her on film, but she begins to take interest in their attention and manages to coax Ernie into coloring with her. (He gives in because he's a little nervous about what might happen if she doesn't get her way.)
ivy #62: keep the kidAfter deciding they have enough superbaby footage, Keith calls the mysterious contact Steph and asks for advice on what to do now that they have their proof. Keith reports back to Ernie (who is coloring with Ivy) that Steph would like the videotape sent to her and expects them to just keep Ivy until she decides to come see for herself (and that only if the video evidence seems compelling). The men are understandably skeptical that they have the resources to keep such a child in one place, but they're freed of that immediate responsibility because in the meantime Ivy has become a little frustrated with coloring and has decided to just ditch them. She tells herself she'll come back when she wants more oranges and colors.
ivy #63: in touchTheresa comes to the building home, bringing cupcakes. She gives them to the girls and Ivy is only interested in eating hers (and Melanie's), but Theresa has bad news: her job is allowing a transfer to another city, which is the best thing that could happen for Theresa's future except that it means she'll have to leave Ivy and Melanie. She insists that Melanie has things under control without her and that Ivy's even started to talk in her accent, but Melanie still feels insecure about being left without Theresa's help, and they agree to stay in touch with letters.
ivy #64: only when you listenMelanie has cooked up a goodbye party for Theresa, and has taught Ivy to serve cookies. She's very proud of her role in the festivities, but she wants to be the one to pour the drinks too and Melanie tries to stop her because that was HER job. Theresa advises Melanie not to interfere, but Melanie insists that Ivy needs discipline, so Theresa suggests Melanie respond to bad behavior by taking away something she can control. She does so by leaving, which throws Ivy into confusion about what she could have done wrong and whether she should just make Melanie come back.
ivy #65: let her beAnnoyed that Melanie left the tea party, Ivy flies after her and floats her right back into her seat, then expects the tea party to resume like normal. However, Melanie's not acting normal because she's very scared now that she can't get away, and Theresa has to figure out a way to get Ivy to leave her alone. Unfortunately, pushing the right buttons to get Ivy to feel bad makes her spiral into a teary self-doubt, and she just doesn't know what to do with herself when Melanie chooses to run angrily away instead of giving her a hug good-bye. . . .
ivy #66: make this rightIvy is upset by Melanie's sudden retreat, so Theresa tries to get Melanie to come back and make peace with the baby. Melanie is not very sympathetic and tries to explain--rather hysterically--that the baby's actions made her fear for her life. Theresa counters by saying that all babies are selfish and she can't help how she is, but that Melanie can make this a teachable moment . . . and that she shouldn't abandon the poor child now or she will probably make her feel like she can't be loved. After Melanie gives in, they have an uncomfortable reunion, but Ivy still senses that something is wrong between them.
ivy #67: make some noiseAfter encouraging Melanie to pour the tea, Ivy is met with a look of fear from her friend, which confuses her. She doesn't know why Melanie is scared of her and suddenly she is exhausted from dealing with so much stress, and she falls asleep in Theresa's lap. Theresa and Melanie have a discussion about why Melanie is so scared and what she might be able to do to protect herself against Ivy, but it's clear Theresa really wants Melanie to continue taking care of her until she herself can do so, and she's committed to getting her children back first. Melanie feels a little better about the situation after realizing she may have a weapon: Ivy doesn't like loud noises, so it might help in sticky situations to scream.
ivy #68: something's not rightThings are basically back to normal between Melanie and Ivy--though Melanie still seems a little more bothered than usual by displays of Ivy's power. She begins to tell stories of their adventures to Theresa in handwritten letters. While Melanie is reading a book to the baby, a woman descending the stairs interrupts and asks them if they're living up there after she notices there's a tent anchored on the roof. Melanie basically tells the lady to buzz off, but the woman implies that the business owner won't approve of their presence there. Melanie doesn't seem concerned whatsoever.
ivy #69: i was goodOne day while Ivy is alone, two men come and check out the roof, obviously having been tipped off by whatever the woman from the last issue reported. They're surprised to see so much stuff on the roof, but they don't believe a child of Ivy's age could be responsible for any of it, so they figure they'll get her to safety and investigate further. One goes to bring the car around while the other hops onto the roof to get Ivy. But though she's amiable, he notices immediately that she isn't very heavy, and discovers that she "kind of floats" when he tests how she handles a short drop to the ground. She doesn't know what to make of it and neither does he, but they descend the stairs and the guy puts her in a car, giving up on explaining to his partner when he's treated dismissively. Enclosed in the car, Ivy begins to panic because of the small space.
ivy #70: who else?As one of the men waits for the other to return with a carseat, Ivy feels stifled and scared by the small space of the car and manages to concentrate until she breaks the window in a panic. She flies out and seeks comfort in the arms of the man standing nearby, but instead of providing it, the guy flips out at the flying baby and begins to try desperately to get her off of him. She's startled and wounded by this treatment, realizing this man wants to hurt her when she needed comfort, and so she pushes him down and flies away, finding herself wondering who else might look nice but actually be mean.
ivy #71: just somethingThe only place Ivy can think of where she might not have to face an unknown mean person is the roof, where she hopes she'll see Melanie again soon. Since no one's there, she settles into her bed to sleep, and Melanie wakes her up because of impending rain. She helps her get into a department store that sells beds, where she spends the night, but the poor baby is confused and exhausted and unwilling to see to her own needs. In the morning she strips her soiled clothes off and leaves in a blanket, only to find Melanie standing on their rooftop with all their stuff mysteriously gone. Melanie promises Ivy that they will get more stuff and a new home, but Ivy is satisfied with the warm embrace she gets.
ivy #72: kind of the bossIn a letter to Theresa, Melanie explains that she's hoping to find an inside place to set Ivy up with living space, but for now she's moved her to her friend Tonya's apartment building roof. All she's got to keep Ivy comfortable in the cold is blankets, and though Ivy herself doesn't seem to mind the cold, Tonya believes it is too cold for a baby to live outdoors. She expresses concern about frostbite and accuses Melanie of not taking very good care of the baby, at which point Melanie decides to leave Ivy with Tonya and see how good a job SHE does taking care of a baby with superpowers.
ivy #73: shhhStuck with figuring out somewhere to put the baby for the night, Tonya sneaks Ivy into her family's apartment and hides her in her own bedroom, but Ivy isn't quiet enough and starts howling when Tonya wants her to leave her clothes on. Her mother and sister notice the noise and demand to know its source, and though she hides Ivy in the closet, that lasts about half a second and her mother demands the truth. After finding out that her daughter was entrusted with the care of a baby who was on their roof for no clear reason, she makes clear her intentions to call the police.
ivy #74: just pick her upTonya insists that her mother shouldn't call the police because the baby isn't an ordinary kid, and she claims the baby has magic. With that she makes her mother hold Ivy so she can feel how light she is, at which point Tonya's sister Tara also wants to hold her. She tosses her experimentally and notices that she stays in the air too long before scurrying down to the ground. The family is convinced that there's something odd about the baby, but they don't know how to react as Tonya requests again that they just take care of her instead of calling the cops.
ivy #75: believing in unicornsTasked with giving Ivy a bath, Tonya's mother seems stunned by the "magical" toddler and confusedly quizzes her about what she is, hoping to make some sense out of the bizarre situation. She quickly catches on from watching Ivy play that this is just a kid--albeit a kid with weird powers--and she becomes emotional, to which Ivy responds with a wet hug (even though she has no idea why this woman is crying). When her daughters come in and ask what's wrong, Tonya's mother explains that she's having some trouble processing the impossible becoming possible again. But this seems to be a joyful revelation for her, and she proceeds to give Ivy a proper bath.
ivy #76: safeAfter feeding her and putting her to bed, Tonya's family has made poor little stressed-out Ivy feel very good. She feels safe for the first time in a long time. That changes when Tonya's dad comes home and interrupts her nap to get a look at her and insist that the police should be called.
ivy #77: every new grown-upTonya's father's hysterical protests against Ivy's presence upset the baby and scare her enough to try to hide under the bed (except that she can't fit under the bed and has to pick it up to hide behind it propped against the wall). He issues an ultimatum: Tonya's mother has to get rid of this supposedly supernatural creature within an hour "or else," and then he leaves to wait in a coffeehouse. Ivy is too confused, tired, and frightened to come out from behind the bed.
ivy #78: his boundariesLeft to sort out what they should do with the baby, Tonya's family discusses whether they should put up with Tonya's dad's demands. Her mother doesn't think it's an option to defy him and thinks he has a right to his boundaries, especially since she can't prove the baby is safe to be around. The sisters bicker about their dads until Tonya's mom gets upset with Tara and sends her to her room, after which she discusses her plan to put Ivy in a hotel where her friend works as long as Melanie can get her in the morning. They prepare to take the baby out, and Ivy thinks about how she's tired of being moved around.
ivy #79: too tired to feelPhysically tired and emotionally exhausted, poor baby Ivy withdraws from her environment and interacts very little as she's moved to a hotel with Tonya's mother. The cleaning lady, Alma, is a friend of Tonya's mother, Tina. This woman seems to have a history of offering Tina a room for free "no questions asked," but seems a bit disturbed at the idea of leaving a toddler there. However, when Ivy is revealed to be "not human" (according to Tina), Alma simply remarks that she's seen weirder and checks in on her throughout the night as she fitfully sleeps. In the morning, when Melanie picks her up, they go into the subway and Ivy withdraws even more into her shell due to fear of the closed space, and ends up not even wanting to make herself light anymore as Melanie carries her. Her internal monologue indicates that she's just too tired to feel anything.
ivy #80: one good thingMelanie takes the subway and ends up spending the day at the library to have a place for Ivy to sleep and recuperate. Melanie fends off questions and comments from well-meaning adults who think she's skipping school (which she is), and after school's out she marches right over to Tonya's house and demands to know why the baby is acting withdrawn. Tonya admits that her father freaked out and might have scared her, but also seems unwilling to accept that the baby even remembers it. After insisting that Melanie take care not to bring the baby around while her father might be home, she does tell Melanie one good thing: her mother has given permission for Tonya to sneak the baby in at night, as long as they can train her to be quiet.
ivy #81: no more talkingWhile listening to Melanie and Tonya bicker about what she needs, Ivy gets frustrated and makes her discomfort known. She's momentarily placated when they both try to give her something she wants, but when they begin focusing on arguing with each other again, Ivy gives up and flies away, off to search for lunch and toys on her own.
ivy #82: at least i have thisAfter being on her own for the night and not really caring what anyone thinks about her antics, Ivy reconvenes with Melanie, who seems grumpy over her assumption that Ivy must've slept at Tonya's house. With that, Melanie sets out to try to win Ivy over with toys and comfortable surroundings, hoping that the baby will prefer the environment she constructed over Tonya's bedroom. Ivy wonders if Melanie was sad because she left.
ivy #83: things to giveA montage issue details Ivy and Melanie taking turns giving each other things, even though they don't always know what each other will appreciate. (Christmas appears to pass in this issue.) Ivy enjoys her days with Melanie and often goes to Tonya's at night, where she ends up sleeping between Tonya and Tara. She develops some measure of trust in the fact that Melanie will always be there for her.
ivy #84: boomIvy, frightened by New Year's fireworks, lets herself into Tonya's bedroom to hide. Because the family is up for the occasion, everyone--including the adults--hears Ivy crying quietly in the bedroom, and Tonya's father freaks out over her presence again. He's even further disturbed by the revelation that their security alarm is not armed for Tonya's window, suggesting that his wife has been allowing Ivy's visits. But then Tonya's mother puts her foot down on her husband's protests and asks him to have a heart when it comes to a crying child. Ivy feels a little better by the end of the issue because she's getting cuddled, though the bangs outside still scare her.
ivy #85: new year's resolutionWith Tonya's older sister Tara keeping Ivy happy with cookies and comfort, her parents Herman and Tina argue about what dangers the baby poses. Tina declares that her New Year's resolution is to stop letting her husband boss her around, and he replies that if she expects him to let her keep putting the family in danger by offering shelter to the baby, she'll have to "explain" Ivy and find a way to prove to him that she isn't dangerous. As an ultimatum, he says that if she cannot do so, he'll make the family move to another apartment to avoid being "haunted."
ivy #86: stinging and ringingOne night when Ivy decides she wants to sleep in Tonya's bedroom again, she finds the older girl unresponsive to the flashlight signal, so despite Tonya making "shoo" signals at her she opens the window herself. A security alarm pierces the night and shocks the baby to the core, causing her to freeze up and actually fall a little before she catches herself. Unfortunately she had her hand on the side of the building when she fell, and now her hand is severely scraped. She flies away to get away from the sound, tries to collect her wits, and wonders what she's supposed to do about all the blood on her hand.
ivy #87: loud noisesIvy waits for Melanie at the playground, hoping the older girl will come and "fix" her hand. Melanie does in fact find her and clean her up, but she's very curious about why Ivy keeps saying that her hand injury was caused by loud noises. She decides they need to talk to Tonya and possibly move the building home to somewhere else since as far as Melanie's concerned Tonya keeps traumatizing the baby.
ivy #88: more than snacksMelanie takes Ivy back to Tonya's house, where she's frightened that the noise is going to start again. She cowers with her hands over her ears while Tonya's mother explains to Melanie what happened with the alarm (though she doesn't know how the baby hurt her hand). She also explains that she can't be a regular caregiver but is willing to help out. Melanie is not impressed and says they really need someone to take care of them. Unable to step into that position, Tonya's mother still gives earmuffs to Ivy and offers to bandage her hand.
ivy #89: it's later nowMelanie has promised Ivy a new stuffed animal as a reward for moving all their possessions to a new roof, but since she hasn't delivered yet, Ivy keeps bothering her about it. Melanie, however, is distracted by a letter from Theresa, to which she responds immediately while Ivy tries to take off the bandage on her hand. Melanie has only just convinced her to keep it on when she begins demanding a stuffed animal again. Melanie confesses her feelings to Theresa in the letter she's writing.
ivy #90: not a babyIvy is getting used to having her bandage off, and avoids using her hands to eat a candy bar. Tonya arrives and criticizes Melanie for feeding her junk food all the time, and they argue about food. Then Tonya reminds Melanie that it's spring break, which she'd forgotten because she was skipping school anyway, and while the girls observe Ivy, they decide she isn't a baby anymore and that it's weird for Melanie to keep calling her "baby."
ivy #91: two whole alphabetsMelanie decides to try to teach Ivy her letters so she'll be able to help write letters to Theresa. She chooses to teach by way of two sets of alphabet magnets, but Ivy seems a lot more interested in playing with them and refusing to let Melanie have them back.
ivy #92: there's a catchMelanie gets caught stealing and unexpectedly gets offered free candy by the shopkeeper--with a catch. If she won't steal from him, he'll give her expired candy for free anytime she wants. Ivy, on the other hand, is more excited than anything about the fact that she's beginning to recognize the letters A and B in real-life situations. Her enthusiasm leads her to get noticed flying by the shopkeeper.
ivy #93: more lettersMelanie fills the shopkeeper in on the quirks of her baby companion while the two of them eat expired lollipops. The shopkeeper is hesitant and a little in awe of a baby with superpowers, but he's eager to be friendly to her, and finds it reassuring when the baby starts laughing over learning about the letter P.
ivy #94: room for usA montage issue shows that Ivy and Melanie go to the store nearly every day, and we learn that the shopkeeper's name is Erick. He has a co-worker whom Ivy does not like because his attention is uncomfortable, so she tries not to go to the store at night. With Melanie, Ivy learns counting and listens to letters from Theresa, but doesn't remember who Theresa is and doesn't know why Melanie wants Theresa's letters if they make her cry. Theresa sends news of getting her own apartment with room for her children, and Melanie is frustrated that she can't move into one of Theresa's rooms.
ivy #95: sparklesHaving observed that Mr. Erick calls her "fairy girl," Ivy gets curious about what fairies are and Melanie is happy to educate her with books. Ivy becomes fixated on the glitter in the fairy book and wants Melanie to get her sparkles. Melanie brings her glitter and a sparkly shirt. She can't wait to show Mr. Erick that she's sparkly, but has no idea what the fairies' wings are about.
ivy #96: not a messWhile playing with glitter in Mr. Erick's store, Ivy experiments with new ways to use her abilities, and while she's distracted with her efforts, Melanie discusses how and why she'd like to be in Theresa's family with Mr. Erick. Melanie reveals that Child Protective Services has begun to investigate her living situation because she's missed too much school.
ivy #97: taken awayIvy accidentally upsets Melanie while pretending their storage boxes are a monster. She thinks she scared Melanie and tries to comfort her, but dialogue to Tonya reveals what's really going on: Melanie was upset because the baby's creative game was "cute and funny," and she's worried about Child Protective Services investigating her family and putting her in foster care, at which point she's convinced she won't be able to see or take care of the baby anymore. Tonya suggests she try to get Ivy into foster care with her if she has to go.
ivy #98: pen palsTonya gets sent on a mission from Melanie to collect the baby and have her lead the way to Mr. Erick's store. There, she delivers a letter from Melanie stating that she's no longer able to roam as she pleases because her new foster parents are picking her up and dropping her off from school. She'll soon be relocating to New Jersey to live with her dad, but before then Melanie wants Mr. Erick to bring the baby for a visit if he can, and wants to stay in touch through letters. Tonya gets paid in candy for her role as a messenger. Ivy's oblivious to what's going on and seems preoccupied by wanting to sort things into colors.
ivy #99: say it againAfter quite a few days without seeing Melanie, Ivy starts getting antsy whenever she hears her mentioned, and even though she's oblivious to the arrangements, Mr. Erick has been making plans to bring her to where Melanie is staying. This finally happens, and Erick and Ivy meet Melanie's foster parents, Olivia and Martin. Melanie wants to give the baby a bath, and is delighted to find that in her absence, Ivy has learned to pronounce her name correctly.
ivy #100: who's gonnaMelanie gives Ivy a bath and dries her off, after which she gets sad thinking about who's going to take care of the baby after she moves in with her dad in New Jersey and what she's going to do without her. Ivy, by contrast, is oblivious as to why Melanie is focused on hugging her, and asks to play a game. Melanie understands that a child this young can't understand they're about to lose each other, and resigns herself to just spending time with her as if nothing's wrong.
ivy #101: the systemMelanie finds out that Mr. Erick's cover story is that he is the baby's foster parent, and she meekly requests that she might be allowed to take Ivy with her when she goes to her dad's. Her foster mother Olivia dismisses this as ridiculous, at which she gets upset and storms out of the room. Mr. Erick promises to bring the baby by for a visit before she has to move for good.
ivy #102: taken care ofAfter an indeterminate length of time fending for herself and being antisocial, Ivy realizes that no one seems to be coming to play with her anymore and decides she feels like eating one of Mr. Erick's meals. When she goes to his store, she succeeds in scoring some canned pasta--served hot!--but is oblivious to the sad news Mr. Erick gives her about Melanie. She's been gone so long that she missed Melanie's move date, and now she's gone, having left a letter that the baby will understand when she's older. Unable to understand what this has to do with her, Ivy asks for string cheese. Melanie's letter is included at the end of the comic.
ivy #103: one with a windowWhile stealing an orange from the usual fruit stand, Ivy encounters the merchant, Keith, who remembers her from nearly a year ago and remarks that she's gotten big. Ivy doesn't remember him, though. Resuming whatever plans they had for showing the amazing flying baby to a mysterious third party named Steph, Keith and his brother Ernie try to keep Ivy inside the store and then the apartment by feeding her and entertaining her with crayons and television. When she's tired, they lock her in a room without a window, much to her dismay.
ivy #104: mystery babyAfter a good night's sleep, Ivy finds herself locked in the windowless room and manages to manipulate the door from the other side to free herself without having to break the door. She finds this encouraging and is in a good mood when she meets the promised contact of Keith and Ernie: a woman named Steph who enters with a bag of donuts and seems perplexed and temporarily speechless when she sees a flying baby. After tentatively giving Ivy a donut and observing her, she starts answering Keith's questions about what happens next, and makes it clear that she plans to try to get an academic institution to investigate the phenomenon of her "macro-psychokinesis"--after some more documentation, of course.
ivy #105: what wordsWhile Ivy is pursuing food and drink, Steph notices she has the ability to move more than one item at a time, and after becoming curious about her ability to lift heavy objects, she makes several requests of the baby, having her lift a refrigerator and a car, framing it as a game. However, Ivy refuses to try to lift two cars because one car made her uncomfortable, and she gets frustrated that she doesn't have any words to explain what she felt so Steph will stop asking her. She almost flies away, but Steph turns on the charm and promises more games, at least temporarily convincing Ivy to come in again.
ivy #106: all for meSteph decides to get Ivy prepared to take a journey the next day, and gives her a bath and some grooming. She sends Keith to the store for some clothes and an antihistamine that she plans to use to sedate the baby so she can't make trouble for the driver. Keith seems to object a little but goes along with Steph's orders. Ivy really enjoys being cleaned and primped, but notices there's a strange distance in the way Steph touches her--the woman doesn't want to cuddle, exactly, though she's not afraid to come into contact with her. After Steph tests the medicine to see if it will actually put her to sleep, she crashes almost immediately, hoping she'll get to sleep in Steph's lap.
ivy #107: what's safeIvy wakes up very thirsty many hours after getting drugged with an over-the-counter antihistamine, and the adults are glad she's awake. Keith gets her some water and begins to express concern about the morality of drugging the baby when it had such a severe effect on her, and even though Steph fully acknowledges that the length of her sleep was very odd and suggests her biology may be different enough to make medicine unpredictable, she still intends to use the syrup on her again to sedate her for the trip to a university for study. Keith becomes strangely protective and says what Steph is doing is wrong, and after taking a stand, talks her into giving her a reduced dose the next day if she must. Keith takes her off to watch cartoons.
ivy #108: all wallsKeith and Ernie have a little argument about the ethics surrounding sending an unsuspecting baby off to some academic institution with a woman who will drug her, but Steph ignores it and proceeds with her plans. Ivy wakes up in a carseat in an animal transport truck and panics because she feels confined. She's wearing shoes--which she's not used to--strapped into a chest harness for the carseat and in a dark, enclosed truck. Going back and forth between panic and determination to get free, Ivy finally manages to escape everything she doesn't like, and though she's still feeling the after-effects of the medicine, she feels rather proud of herself for taking control and getting out of the bad situation. Even though now she's above a highway with no idea where she is.
ivy #109: a secretWhile flying toward a group of tall buildings in the distance that she assumes must be where she belongs, Ivy thinks over the events that led to her getting trapped in a box and realizes using her powers in front of people causes many of the experiences she hates. Once she gets back into town, she's decided that in front of other people, she should act as though she can't fly or move things remotely. Perhaps then, she reasons, people will be genuinely nice to her. She comforts herself with the thought that she can still fly when no one is looking.
ivy #110: heavy thingsFeeling paralyzed and weighed down by all her needs, Ivy simply chooses to do nothing and sits on the steps of a shop all night. In the morning, a woman comes out and begins sweeping the steps, and when Ivy hears the woman speak to her, she's suddenly overcome with a desire to be taken care of by this woman and vows to be good. The woman invites her inside the shop for bread and milk.
ivy #111: who takes care of you?Pleasantly surprised by the interior of the shop, Ivy tentatively explores in the cabinets when the shopkeeper's back is turned, but gets plucked off the counter when the woman fears she'll break her neck from climbing. She gets warm milk and bread while the woman quizzes her on where her parents are and who takes care of her. She can only answer that she takes care of herself, and hopes the woman warms to her enough to touch her and treat her kindly.
ivy #112: about my sizeThe shopkeeper seems curious about Ivy's hands and feet, which she doesn't understand, and then the woman gives Ivy a cinnamon roll to eat while she goes upstairs and fetches her daughter Charlotte. Ivy is unsure of what to make of this child--she's a little surprised by coming face to face with someone about her size--but she's not concerned about much besides eating another cinnamon roll. Charlotte asks her questions and volunteers that she's five years old, but Ivy doesn't know how to respond or whether she wants to.
ivy #113: i think they're goodAfter the nice shopkeeper looks Ivy over at close range to get a good idea of how to describe her as a lost child to the police, she thinks better of it because the child looks so strange and she's unsure of whether this is an ordinary lost kid. The scrutiny of her company makes Ivy a little uncomfortable so she distracts herself with looking through a stained-glass window. Soon she gets tired and falls asleep on the fuzzy rug, and Charlotte seems excited about telling her mother to take care of customers while she takes care of babysitting. Ivy drifts off feeling safe.
ivy #114: lots of knotsWhile Ivy takes a nap, Charlotte reads to her and her mother watches the two of them. When she wakes up, Charlotte mentions that she has messy hair and the shopkeeper offers to comb it, but because little Charlotte suggested that too many knots can make your hair fall out, Ivy scrambles to finger-comb her tangles. Because she didn't do it entirely with her fingers, the shopkeeper notices something strange about it, but Ivy turns her attention to Charlotte's long spring curls and expresses jealousy over how bouncy they are. She ends the issue thinking about how she wants curls of her own.
ivy #115: making a curlyWhile trying to make her hair imitate Charlotte's hair, Ivy accidentally uses her powers to hold a lock of her hair in a spiral, which gets the other girl's attention and makes her think maybe Ivy's hair is special. It takes Ivy a second to realize what the big deal is, and then she gets upset that she couldn't avoid revealing her abilities. She sulks and wonders whether she will have to leave because they're staring at her.
ivy #116: when they lookDisappointed in herself for failing to hide her secret for long, Ivy listens to the shopkeeper's comforting encouragement and takes enough of it to heart to take the risk of trying to explain. She finds that her words aren't enough--she lacks the vocabulary to tell the woman about her powers--so she reluctantly provides a demonstration. Steeling herself for an unpleasant reaction, she floats in the air and tries to gather the courage to look at the woman's face, and prays it won't be a bad reaction.
ivy #117: something like thisThe shopkeeper reacts to Ivy's flying with suppressed surprise and kindness, calmly asking her what else she can do and asking her frankly not to fly in front of her customers. Ivy is emotionally overcome by feeling accepted, unable to believe something like this could finally happen to her. The shopkeeper asks Charlotte what she thinks of her new friend flying, and Ivy observes that the woman's attitude appears to have set the scene for her daughter's reaction.
ivy #118: this magical placeDelighted at being allowed to fly in the presence of the shopkeeper, Ivy floats to the ceiling, where she discovers that the bumpy ceiling has a texture she enjoys. While she picks at it, distracted, the shopkeeper begs her to come down before a customer sees her. She finally obeys the request, at which point the shopkeeper asks her again what her name is and what kind of "magical creature" she is. Ivy avoids the comment and returns to the rug, examining the glints in its fibers because they make her think there is actually magic or in the rug. She encourages Charlotte to join her, which she does.
ivy #119: braidy headCharlotte distracts Ivy from her annoyance at customers filling the store by teaching her how to play "beauty shop" with some dolls. The girls give dolls various hairstyles and Ivy's enjoying herself, but then becomes intrigued by Charlotte's braided hairstyle on a doll. She tries to learn how to make her own braids by using her telekinetic energy to "observe" the movement Charlotte is making, and easily learns how to duplicate the same motions in her own hair. Soon she has multiple braids throughout her hair and Charlotte assures her she looks pretty with her new hairstyle.
ivy #120: it's all yummyWhen the shopkeeper Margaret finally reaches a lull in serving her customers, she serves a lunch to her daughter and Ivy. Having never had a baloney sandwich before, she's a little hesitant, but decides everything this lady gives her is likely to be yummy, and ends up enjoying the sandwich. Margaret being so nice to her makes her strangely sad again, and she wonders if she will get used to it.
ivy #121: a little bit upCharlotte and Ivy play with hairstyles some more and Charlotte becomes intrigued by the way some of Ivy's motions don't involve her hands, so she asks her whether she could take her flying if she wanted. Delighted at the prospect of another person who likes flying, Ivy eagerly bounces into the air with Charlotte, but she asks to be put down, and then Margaret scolds them to stay down while they have customers. Her obviously shocked customer seems too confused to say anything, considering Margaret treated the random flying as if it was an ordinary naughty action and gave them a dismissive "Kids today!" reaction. Ivy is left wondering how anyone can not like flying.
ivy #122: so good todayThe bakery closes down for the night and Margaret lets Charlotte and Ivy help with small cleaning tasks like wiping tables and cleaning glass. When Margaret compliments Ivy's helpfulness, she wants to do more to help this woman who's been so kind to her, and ends up demanding to finish Margaret's sweeping for her. When she proves she can do it without a broom, she gets another compliment and feels over the moon about it. She can't wait to find more ways to help Margaret.
ivy #123: i'll help youThe last chore that remains is watering the plants, and Ivy observes with interest that Margaret needs a stepstool to accomplish the task. She attempts to help tip water into the plants from the watering can despite Margaret's protests, and ends up watering a plant too much so it overflows. Stricken with shame over her mistake, she worries that she won't be forgiven and believes she's done something terrible, but Margaret encourages her to water another plant with guidance, and when she's been reassured, Margaret invites her upstairs for dinner.
ivy #124: pretty dirtyIvy is again pleasantly surprised by how good the food is at Margaret's dinner table--they eat spaghetti--and then she takes a bath with Charlotte (who agrees to the situation as long as Ivy gets a rinse first, since she's pretty dirty). Feeling tentatively secure and wanting to "keep" Margaret, Ivy finishes her bath and gets promised new clothes.
ivy #125: i've always believedMargaret tries to get Ivy to wear pajamas and go to bed, but Ivy notices it's night outside and is immediately compelled to go night flying. Margaret quickly realizes the child means business and proceeds to dress her in clothes appropriate for the outdoors, but she suddenly becomes sentimental and speaks about being a believer in fair folk, thanking Ivy for her visit and her "blessing." She has no idea what Margaret is talking about and departs after a hug, thinking about what a good day she had and her intention to return.
ivy #126: tell meWhen Ivy wakes up craving bread, she realizes she can't find the bakery, and decides to try to use words to get a hot dog vendor to give her directions. She's unable to communicate with him very well because he keeps insisting that he wants to give the directions to her mommy, though he does seem to know of a good bakery in the area. But when her frustration causes her to forget that she isn't supposed to be flying around people, the vendor notices, changes his tune, and carries her around a couple corners to Margaret's bake shop. She exclaims that he has found her "brownie" and claims that all good family businesses have one.
ivy #127: if it's dirtyAfter the hot dog man leaves, Charlotte tells her mother that she thinks she should marry the hot dog man, and while Margaret asks for understanding from her daughter, Charlotte is adamant that Margaret should be married and shouldn't have left her father. She runs away to sulk, but Ivy wants to play, so Margaret distracts her with a dough-kneading task. When made to wash her hands, Ivy wonders why she doesn't have to "clean" her telekinetic energy and why it doesn't get dirty like her hands when she touches things with it.
ivy #128: littlerMargaret decides Charlotte would probably appreciate someone paying attention to her again and encourages Ivy to go play with her daughter. She does so and accidentally scares her by flying into her field of view. When Charlotte calms down and stands up, she notices Ivy's much smaller once on the ground, and she decides to suggest playing school together, but Ivy wants to play beauty parlor again and Charlotte reluctantly gives in. Ivy wonders when she'll be bigger than someone.
ivy #129: the right hairIvy relearns how to braid hair with Charlotte's help, and starts braiding all the hair she can find. Charlotte is impressed with her job and starts trying to call her mother's attention to it, but in the meantime Ivy's gotten hold of the mirror and realized yet again that she does not have bangs anymore, which upsets her. Charlotte is unable to understand what she's trying to express when she tries to explain what she wants, but Margaret understands and offers to cut her hair. Ivy wonders why her bangs go away sometimes.
ivy #130: clearAfter getting a haircut and feeling very good about it, Ivy and Charlotte spend the afternoon looking out the stained-glass window at people and reading stories. Ivy hears a story about school that takes place in a classroom and wants to know more about how she can go to a room full of children, but Charlotte suggests the next best thing is playing school, which is not what Ivy has in mind.
ivy #131: is it real? After closing the bakery and going back to Margaret's living quarters, Ivy reads with Charlotte before dinner. She encounters talking cars and clothed teddy bears in the stories and tries to figure out if these books are depicting things that really exist, but Charlotte is amused at her ignorance and makes Ivy feel bad. The girls eat dinner and dessert, and Ivy wonders why they call her a "brownie." She's intrigued when a dessert option is a brownie, and concludes that it must be like "honey" and "sweetie" as a nice nickname.
ivy #132: come lie downWhen Miss Margaret offers to make Ivy comfortable for "night-night," she realizes it's time for night flying, and resists Miss Margaret's efforts to get her to settle down on the couch. Eventually, though, the temptations of a soft, warm place to lie down and a stuffed bunny have her delaying her plans.
ivy #133: that should be a ruleIvy wakes up on the couch dismayed to find that it is daytime and she has missed night flying. She breaks down crying and Miss Margaret tries to snap her out of it by projecting a calm demeanor, but Ivy's not having it and screams louder and yells at Miss Margaret. The noise awakens Charlotte, who comes in, matter-of-factly tells her mother that it should be a rule that magic kids should ALWAYS be able to fly at night, and defuses the situation by suggesting breakfast.
ivy #134: getting biggerIn a montage episode, Ivy talks about having someone to care for her and give her food, and Miss Margaret is shown to be recording her height by making marks on a door next to her daughter's. She wants to be bigger. But she notes that she always leaves at night because she doesn't truly belong with people whose feet don't come off the ground.
ivy #135: how to not tellCharlotte comes to Ivy one day and asks her to use her abilities to get a mysterious object down from the closet for her. It turns out to be a photo frame containing a picture of her and her father, which she treasured before her mother hid it from her. Charlotte swears Ivy to secrecy--while ascertaining that she knows what a secret is--and hides it in her room.
ivy #136: a book about meIvy enjoys seeing her breath as the weather turns cold. She decides to stop in at Miss Margaret's for cocoa before starting her night flying in earnest, and finds that Christmas has taken over the area and Charlotte is writing her Christmas list. She doesn't know anything about Santa and doesn't understand when they ask her to discuss what she wants for the holiday, and when Charlotte tries to read a book about Christmas to her, Ivy becomes irritated that she's being told to believe in flying animals she's never seen in the sky. She wishes she could find a book that reflected her experience.
ivy #137: about firesAnother very cold night drives Ivy into Miss Margaret's bakery, where she finds the fireplace in use for the first time. They have marshmallows and cocoa, though Charlotte seems puzzled why Ivy can't solve the problem of their only having two roasting sticks by using her telekinetic abilities to hold her marshmallow, while Ivy can't imagine why Charlotte would think she could hold a marshmallow someplace that hot.
ivy #138: the high onesThe next time Ivy comes to the bakery, the mother and daughter have their Christmas tree up and she gets to help decorate. Ivy is assigned the decoration of the higher parts of the tree, which fills her with unfamiliar pride and happiness to the point that she gets overwhelmed and has to rest.
ivy #139: santa was hereIvy sneaks into the bakery on Christmas morning to get a cinnamon roll, and the noise she makes downstairs makes Charlotte think Santa is there. When she comes down, she observes with interest that the cookies they'd left for Santa are gone and the presents have arrived. Margaret joins them and seems cross that her daughter has gone downstairs without permission, but she eases off the scolding to wish them a merry Christmas and asks them to pose in front of the tree for photos.
ivy #140: like youIvy and Charlotte pose for pictures, and Ivy hates the flash and resists posing with her eyes open. Once the portraits are done and Ivy doesn't see the point of it, they open presents and Ivy receives a few little toys. Charlotte is most excited about the books, and Ivy thinks it's interesting until Charlotte insists a cartoon of "the littlest elf" looks like her just because the character is blonde with pointed ears. Ivy doesn't see the resemblance and feels offended because she thinks the cartoon is ugly.
ivy #141: the wrong handsIvy doesn't want to be associated with the elf in Charlotte's Christmas book, but Charlotte keeps pointing out more similarities and mentions that the cartoon elf only has four fingers on each hand--just like Ivy herself. This intrigues her, as she does notice when it's pointed out that her hands are different from Charlotte's, but she doesn't know what it means and is concerned that her hands are "wrong." She wonders if she's supposed to have another finger, and how she's supposed to fix it.
ivy #142: you want some?Ivy finds oranges again and while she happily eats one, Keith and Ernie discover her and discuss what to do. Keith was apparently bullied into paying for the damage Ivy did to the truck Steph tried to transport her in, and he no longer wants anything to do with trapping her and trying to get a reward. Ernie, however, still wants to turn her over to Steph and asks her where she's going when she moves to leave. Ivy says she's going to a bakery and leaves Ernie behind, thinking eagerly about cookies.
ivy #143: as big as youIvy is alone with Miss Margaret one day and they have some time together. Ivy asks questions about why they no longer have the Christmas tree or the fire in the fireplace, and Miss Margaret simplifies an explanation of time passing. Ivy looks forward to being taller and wonders if she will be bigger than Miss Margaret when she's an adult.
ivy #144: her violent sideErnie finally finds Miss Margaret's shop and comes in to ask Miss Margaret whether she'd be willing to help get Ivy into protective custody of some sort, and tries to convince Margaret that Ivy has a violent side. Margaret immediately feels that Ernie does not have her best interests at heart and asks him to leave her alone, and while he points out that she has no more rights to her than anyone else, Margaret becomes fiercely protective and asks him to leave before she calls the police.
ivy #145: not about youCharlotte discovers a book about adoption on her mother's bedside table and wonders if it has something to do with putting her up for adoption or her own history as an adopted child. Miss Margaret assures Charlotte she is not up for adoption or adopted, and says she was looking into adoption because she was hoping to be able to adopt Ivy, but has determined it's probably impossible since they don't know her origin. Charlotte nevertheless wants to celebrate having a "sister," and when she tries to play the "sliding game" in her socks on the wood floor, she slips and Ivy has to catch her.
ivy #146: a good manMiss Margaret decides to have Ivy show her the orange shop so she can track down the man who wants to take Ivy away, but Ivy doesn't know how to show Miss Margaret where it is without flying, and she doesn't want to fly. Margaret ends up following Ivy as she flies, and when she meets Keith, she finds out he's actually on their side: he doesn't want Ivy to get taken by his brother or Steph, and he promises to tell Miss Margaret if he finds out anything about his brother capturing her. Margaret tells Keith he's a good man, and Ivy has no idea why Miss Margaret isn't eating oranges if she specifically asked for such a thing.
ivy #147: for my growingIvy finds out she's now as tall as Charlotte was when she first started coming to Miss Margaret's, so she decides she should be eating more food so she can get even bigger. She reflects on feeling happy that Miss Margaret is there to give her food and a nice place to be, but determines that she still needs her flying because a place with a ceiling is too constricting for her. She leaves Miss Margaret's after a healthy breakfast, carrying a cinnamon roll and hoping to grow more.
ivy #148: no questionsWhen a strange woman approaches Ivy in an alley and sits down beside her to offer her food and drink, she expects the usual "are you lost? where's your mommy?" questions, but this woman not only looks unlike anyone she's seen before; she also doesn't act like everyone else. When Ivy touches the woman's long red hair, she reciprocates by touching Ivy back--which she likes--and she finds herself optimistic about making friends with this woman.
ivy #149: i should hideAdele and Ivy begin to walk out of the alley together and Ivy notices Adele puts on her hood. Wondering why Adele wants to hide, she asks about it, and when Adele says she's hiding because people are sometimes mean to her for looking different, Ivy wonders if she should be hiding for the same reason and hides under Adele's cloak.
ivy #150: special ladyAs Ivy travels with the new woman, she realizes she was sleepily flying, and steels herself for some kind of rebuke or freak-out. Instead, the kind lady says she likes her flying and encourages her to do more of it, and calls her special. Ivy can barely wrap her mind around that reaction, and thinks the lady must be awfully special herself.
ivy #151: i won't lookUpon arriving at the beach, Ivy sees two men and becomes uncomfortable with the way they're staring at her, and after realizing Weaver is also a person that she'd mistaken for a toy because of his size, she realizes Alix is being hostile and begins to feel very self-conscious in response to his comments. Adele defends her choice to bring her there and they get into a shouting match, which inspires Ivy to run away toward the water because that was what she wanted to see in the first place.
ivy #152: making splashesAfter being shocked and pleasantly surprised that Weaver can fly, Ivy revels in flying over the ocean with her new friend. Weaver teaches her how to enjoy splashing in the water while flying over it, and she becomes absolutely smitten with the experience, enjoying the sea until long after Weaver gets too tired to stay out there with her.
ivy #153: that guyIvy is still playing in the sand when Alix approaches and invites her to breakfast. She's put off by something about his attitude and chooses to run away from him instead, and when he pursues her and picks her up, she shoves him down and flies away.
ivy #154: don't like the wordsAfter Adele finally gets Ivy to come to breakfast, she enjoys mushrooms and warily takes nuts from Alix since he seems to be objecting to her presence less. But then when Dax returns, Alix explains Ivy's powers to him and she starts to feel incredibly self-conscious about being talked about. She wanders away so she won't have to hear it, and wonders why everyone thinks she's weird all the time and why she can't be proud of herself.
ivy #155: can you sayIvy gets thirsty and finds the ocean's water undrinkable, so she returns to the group for water. She sits in Adele's lap and gets her drink, ignoring a request to apologize to Alix for kicking sand on him on the way, and then when Adele tells her she can't go back to playing until she eats, she's a bit puzzled. Of course she CAN go play if she wants to. But she agrees to eat some berries before running away again, and finds them tasty.
ivy #156: a word for youAfter Ivy wiped her sneeze in her shirt, Adele decided to give her a bath, and the river delights her. While playing and getting a quick rinse from Adele, they chat about names, and Adele tries to get Ivy to acknowledge her by name. She doesn't appear particularly interested in saying anything about a name for herself, though, and asks about "the blue fuzzy." She wonders where he could be, and wants to play with him.
ivy #157: nobody's madIvy decides to ignore Adele's request to come back to the base with her and flies off to explore. She enjoys the trees and water and various natural playthings, and finds herself wondering where all this stuff was all her life. She loves being able to do whatever she wants without anyone yelling at her for following her impulses, and she revels in it.
ivy #158: food on a stickIvy wants to help cook the fish by holding the kebab stick, but Adele won't let her. Weaver pops up with a distraction and they eat berries by tossing them into their own mouths until the fish is ready. Ivy finds she does like fish (though she was initially a bit grossed out by it), and then she falls asleep on the sand--against advice.
ivy #159: for the gameNow that Weaver's taught Ivy to shoot acorns out of her mouth, she's ready for when Alix shows up, but she believes this is a game he'll appreciate. In the meantime, she wonders what kind of entertainment Weaver has in mind for playing in the tree, and is intrigued by the fact that he can wrap his feet around tree branches. When Alix does show up, Weaver covers for her as she heads off to get her acorn ammunition.
ivy #160: lap for a napIvy and Weaver return from their flight to find that breakfast has been made, so they join in and Ivy elects to sit on Alix's lap (which he reluctantly allows). She points out that their hair is the exact same color and Weaver jokes that they might be related. Ivy falls asleep in his lap before she's done eating her apple.
ivy #161: a word about meAdele wants to choose a flower name, but the child is more interested in comparing herself to the viney leaves crawling all over the rock, and begins pretending to be a plant, eating sun for breakfast. Adele points out that the plant is called ivy and suggests the name, and though the concept of naming makes her apprehensive, she's pleased by the comparisons and accepts the name, then proceeds to climb all over Adele.
ivy #162: what's yoursIvy is playing by herself when she sees Alix returning with bags of gifts. When she tries to take the bags away from him to see what's in them, Alix does a great job talking her out of it and convincing her she should help him carry the items back to the home base for surprises. She's delighted to find that he bought her a "fairy dress" that she likes, though Weaver enjoys making fun of the cloak Alix got himself.
ivy #163: why we're importantAfter overhearing Adele scolding Alix to wash his own dishes because it isn't HER job, Ivy wonders about jobs and asks Weaver. He outlines what everyone's "job" is, but when she wants her own responsiblities, he tells her she's just a kid and doesn't need a job, so she should concentrate on learning and playing. She is not satisfied and determines that she will show them that she can be important enough to deserve a job.
ivy #164: show me yoursIvy finds Alix next on her quest to learn everyone's job. Alix discloses his underwater breathing ability, which intrigues her, and he agrees to show her how he catches fish. But very similarly to what happened with Dax, Ivy finds a way to catch many more fish without his limitations, and is puzzled when he swims off in disgust.
ivy #165: that person nowIvy ponders feeling useless and concludes that she must have made others feel useless by doing their jobs for them. Then Adele comes into the forest to apologize to her, and while she's willing to grant forgiveness, her first thought is on getting a job that's hers alone.
ivy #166: rudeIvy finds that Dax is using the radio again so she decides she'll come back later for music, and goes off on her own to amuse herself. She thinks about how there used to be buildings and now there's just forests, and how she likes it better now. She finds a bird's nest and doesn't know what it is, and then discovers young male hikers coming through the woods. She decides to get their attention.
ivy #167: birds and beesWeaver follows Ivy into the forest to see her bird's nest but she can't find it again and becomes frustrated. Weaver explains that he needs a rest and she has trouble understanding why long flights tire him out until she tries flapping her arms for a while. Then she builds a nest out of sand to show Weaver what it looked like, and he tries to teach her some letters to distract her from asking questions about why eggs lead to baby birds.
ivy #168: watching meAdele wants to read Ivy a bedtime story and she wants Adele to do so from the end of the bed. She zones out while thinking about who else used to read to her and wonders what happened to them. She also ponders what might happen when her current company has had enough of her. She ends the episode cuddling with Adele.
ivy #169: reading timeIvy is perplexed when Weaver tries to teach her reading in a different way than she's used to, and even though she likes that Weaver is engaging her with spelling funny words, she just wants reading time to be reading time, and ends up frustrating him by asking him to just read her a story.
ivy #170: the next oneWeaver begins giving Ivy increasingly complicated secret messages hidden in plastic toy containers, and she has to learn to read each message to be able to find the next one. She's a little angry when she gets stumped by a word, but resolves to improve so she can enjoy finding the next hidden message.
ivy #171: just one wordDax gives useful prompts to help Ivy figure out where a certain tree might be, and when she finds Weaver's next planted clue, she finds herself again stumped by the even more complicated message inside. Ivy considers giving up entirely, but Dax's encouragement convinces her that maybe she'll just read at least one more word.
ivy #172: a family, i guessAlix, having taken Ivy back to the cave so Weaver and Dax can talk privately, is looking for a book to read with her when Ivy starts questioning whether anyone likes her. Worried that she always makes people fight, she asks if the group likes her and if Alix personally likes her. He tries to explain family in a simplified way, suggesting that she's part of their family group and they'll always like her, but she doesn't have much of a concept of family. Alix searches for books that will teach her what those relationships are about.
ivy #173: real dogsIvy sees Adele returning from her journey and greets her in the forest pretending to be a dog. With a rope tail and a rope tied around her neck, she begs to be taken for a walk, and when Adele humors her, she begins asking questions about whether dogs are real and whether she can have one.
ivy #174: trouble with wordsIvy thinks about not having a word for her ability or the force that makes her powers possible, running through other parts of her and experiences she can describe with words she does already have. Adele arrives (having been prompted to do so by Weaver), and she gets to the heart of Ivy's frustration. She gives her a word for her ability--though it's too long for Ivy to remember--and agrees that it's a problem for her to have no name for the force that allows her to move things without touching them.
ivy #175: girls onlyIvy and Adele are taking a bath together when questions about gender occur to Ivy. She wants an explanation for how they know they're girls and why bathtime together excludes boys. She also wants to know what physical similarities she can expect to have with grown women since she thinks she looks the most like Alix even though she knows he's not a girl. Adele is patient with Ivy's questions, but she remains confused and wants to ask Weaver for more straightforward answers.
ivy #176: pretending they knowAlix attempts a cursory crash course for Ivy on what nudity, intimacy, and sex are for in the context of adulthood, but she remains baffled. Weaver breaks in criticizing Alix's approach when Alix suggests Ivy will understand more when she grows up and has a boyfriend, and she leaves the conversation convinced that Weaver and Alix don't know the answer to female and male identity either.
ivy #177: a noiseIvy's spending some time alone and she ends up in the woods with a mysterious presence. When she hears something moving but can't see anything, she remotely examines the source of the noise with her energy, and learns that it is something humanoid with wings. But when she tries to stop it from flying away, the noise the creature makes is loud and startling, leaving Ivy stunned as it escapes.
ivy #178: something about herIvy clarifies some perspectives about the invisible woman in the forest, and asks Adele why she couldn't talk if she was really a person. Adele attempts to explain that not everyone that's a person can talk, and that people have different abilities for better or for worse. Ivy still doesn't grasp the idea and concludes maybe she would be able to teach such a person to talk.
ivy #179: not hateIvy is worried that Neptune hates her, and even though Adele tries to convince her otherwise, Ivy thinks back to other times she's made people "hate" her and believes she's done it again. Adele explains that she and the others have also accidentally startled Neptune and she still learned to trust them enough to talk to them and eat their food, and Ivy slowly begins to believe Adele. They walk back to the cave with Ivy newly excited about eventually winning the invisible woman over.
ivy #180: the itchesIvy is up reading with a flashlight and Adele eases her back into bed, encouraging her to imagine stories until she falls asleep. Instead, she feels itchy and begins wondering if she's supposed to move on to another place. She doesn't fully understand her restlessness, but she knows she feels it, and after a quick venture out of the cave, she returns to bed, deciding she'll probably leave the next time she feels itchy.
ivy #181: no loud soundsAdele takes Ivy into the forest because it's a good day to meet Neptune, but Adele says whether the meeting is successful will depend on whether Ivy can control her tendency to be loud. Ivy manages to barely contain some excited impulses and successfully has a small interaction with Neptune, trading meows and passing a leaf back and forth. Ivy is excited at the idea of being friends with her.
ivy #182: colors underneathAfter Ivy had a negative reaction to Neptune's red eyes, Adele tries to explain how pigment affects perception of color. Ivy, relieved that the red eyes does not mean Neptune had bloody eyes, wonders more about the "real" colors of things she can't see.
ivy #183: it's timeIvy wakes up feeling "itchy" again and decides it's time for her to move on to someplace else. She briefly looks around for Weaver to either say goodbye or see if he wants to come with her, but she doesn't find him. She heads off to places unknown.
ivy #184: a different meIvy's flight into the night has taken her on a journey of thought as well. She wonders if she gets to bring her name with her into the next part of her life, and thinks about how she'll be expected to act if she encounters other people who don't understand her. She flies into a telephone wire and hurts her chest, and she goes to the ground to nurse her wounds.
ivy #185: when they're not togetherIvy continues her wandering and finds herself in a city at night. Her chest still hurts so she goes into an open convenience store to look at it under the lights. Her chest is bruised but not bleeding, but the sight of it still freaks her out a little and her whimpering draws the attention of the store's employee. He lets her sit down in a chair while he tries to call a supervisor to advise him on how to help her.
ivy #186: a blue thingThe convenience store clerk teaches Ivy to operate the water fountain and has her doodle on paper with a pen while she waits for police. Ivy feels lonely as she ends up drawing a picture of Weaver. A police officer arrives and seems disappointed in the clerk for not finding any information about her, and he begins to ask her basic questions. Ivy wants to tell the policeman that she wants food and attention for her injury.
ivy #187: my three thingsThe policeman at the convenience store listens as Ivy rattles off three things she needs help with: finding the beach again, getting some breakfast, and fixing whatever's wrong with her chest. The policeman takes interest in her bruises and asks how she got hurt, and Ivy feels compelled to hide the real story because she knows she can't talk about flying. The man misinterprets her discomfort as an attempt to cover up being abused by caregivers, and he begins to help her get some food. Ivy hopes he'll take her back to the beach.
ivy #188: braveThe policeman decides to take Ivy to the hospital after ascertaining that she is not on any recent missing children reports. But Ivy balks at having to go in a car, even though the man asks her to be brave for him. She escapes the policeman instead.
ivy #189: off eastwaysIvy naps on a bus stop bench and ends up talking to a woman who gives her a donut and tells her which way the ocean is. Ivy is happy to have a second problem solved, but keeps being overwhelmed with sadness she doesn't understand.
ivy #190: still not a beachIvy continues flying eastwards and observes that she has no idea if she's going the right way. Her chest still hurts so she elects to take a dip in a lake she's flying over to cool it off a little. She finds the drawing she did of Weaver in her pants pocket and wishes she had paper to draw her other companions.
ivy #191: a faraway voiceIvy now has grime all over herself from swimming in a mucky lake, and she puts her clothes back on and longs for the ocean. She tries flying very fast, hoping that will get her closer even though she doesn't know if she's flying the right way. And then she thinks she hears a voice so she stops flying, and when she turns around, it's Weaver!
ivy #192: fix itselfIvy offers to get Weaver some water. He expresses concern that she doesn't have anything to carry it in, but she assures him she can do it with her energy, and does so. She brings back a bubble of water to offer him, and as he refreshes himself, they discuss her bruised chest and the fact that it will just heal itself without her having to do anything but wait. She's fascinated with the idea of doing something she doesn't mean to do without knowing how.
ivy #193: looking for thisIvy reflects on being happy to be home and have all its comforts again. Then she realizes Adele may have inadvertently destroyed her drawing of Weaver since it was in her pants pocket when she took a bath. But Adele found the paper in her pocket and saved it for her. She can't wait to show it to Weaver.
ivy #194: not for youIvy tells her traveling story to Alix and Dax as they play in the sand. Alix reveals that he'd like her to help him with fishing once winter comes, and she wonders why he needs help. When he explains that she won't have to be submerged in cold water to fish, she ponders how everyone needs her special abilities to do things they can't, and then is stumped by why Adele only seems to want her to read. She wonders what good her reading does Adele and heads off to ask.
ivy #195: slipperyIvy is helping Alix catch fish, but objects to helping him clean the fish she catches. She feels that should be his job, and becomes frustrated when he loses the fish she gives him. They get the fish back and Ivy's curious about why it flops around, but isn't disturbed that it's trying to escape becoming dinner. She's more focused on not having to worry about the parts other people can easily take care of for her.
ivy #196: doing it rightIvy decides she wants to say something to the dead rabbit they'll be eating. She thanks it, but recognizes that it didn't exactly give permission for them to eat it, and wonders about the gray morals involved in that. While discussing it briefly with Weaver, he tells her she's the appropriate amount of sad about this complicated issue.
ivy #197: just a flashIvy hears that Adele has returned and brings a mysterious object to her to find out what it is. She loses interest when Adele claims it's animal poop. Then she notices Adele has an interesting object, which turns out to be a camera. Adele demonstrates how it works by taking Ivy's photograph, and though the flash bothers her at first, she's impressed by how it spits out a Polaroid picture that develops before her eyes. She wants more pictures.
ivy #198: in our heartsIvy wants to know more about Webster but Adele doesn't want to share. Though she does tell Ivy she likes talking to this man because they feel the same about things in their hearts, Ivy is thoroughly confused by what that could mean. She's disappointed that Adele won't disclose.
ivy #199: cry on meAfter a tense dinner where Alix was ticked at Adele for keeping secrets, Adele takes Ivy to bed and Ivy tries, in her innocent way, to reassure Adele that she can keep secrets if she wants and Ivy would have never told. Adele gets emotional at this, puzzling Ivy, and states that Ivy has a good heart. They promise to always be there to laugh or cry on each other when they need someone.
ivy #200: winter coatAdele approaches the group and asks if anyone has any special requests for her trip to the city. Alix and Weaver point out that Adele took that trip very recently, but she says Ivy needs a winter coat. At that point Alix notices Ivy doesn't appear cold despite the chilly weather, and he treats this peculiarity like it's suspicious. Ivy becomes uncomfortable with the attention.
ivy #201: not here to askDax comments that someone being gone for longer than expected is usually something they'd ask Adele about, but since Adele's the one who's gone, they can't. Ivy interprets this as a joke and laughs, while Alix is disturbed that she thinks it's funny and believes she knows more than she's letting on. The two bicker briefly, with Alix accusing and Ivy defensive, until Weaver spots Adele coming through the high grass.
ivy #202: always yellingIvy has a good fishing day and brings in eight fish, but Alix is upset that she would catch so many that they didn't need and accuses her of catching so many just to show off. When Weaver defends her and says Alix is jealous and shouldn't correct her behavior by yelling at her, Alix suggests he is the only one in the group who's always being criticized. Ivy feels that Alix is angry at her for no reason, and is angry in return.
ivy #203: definitely meant toIvy has come to the conclusion that Alix will always be mad at her no matter what she does, so she antagonizes him on purpose by swiping one of his precious root beer bottles. She gets caught drinking it and spitting it in the forest, and Alix confronts her. But Ivy is having dark thoughts about how she must be a bad person, and she has no qualms about knocking Alix away from her roughly when he takes her arm. She quickly finds Alix is unconscious and doesn't know quite what to do or how to feel about it, but she acknowledges that it was not an accident.
ivy #204: before you eatIvy is ready for a meditation lesson with Dax, but she's hungry, and wants to eat before the lesson, while Dax says it's better for her to be empty so she can devote all of her energy to her meditation. Ivy eventually agrees to Dax's terms and attempts meditation, but finds herself floating without meaning to, inspired by the image of filling herself with air and feeling light. She's disappointed that her attempt to have more control resulted in having less.
ivy #205: fistsDax and Ivy are still in the forest and he suggests she find a way to acceptably express her anger with her body, in a way that's harmless. Ivy doesn't know how to do that, but Dax points out that she's already doing it when she yells and clenches her fists. She's amazed to realize she doesn't have to stop herself from being angry; she just has to change how she channels it.
ivy #206: more exciting than wordsIvy proudly shows Weaver that she can read an entire book by herself, but Weaver realizes she does not retain any comprehension about the story. He discusses it with her, helping her realize it's a story about kids on a baseball team getting into a fight. Ivy, delighted by the storytelling, announces that she wants to emulate the book and have a fist fight like the boys on the team. Weaver protests that it's not a good way to solve problems, but she just wants the experience, so she is able to talk him into roughhousing with her.
ivy #207: smallIvy speculates on what it is to be small, given that Dax has a lot of physical power and she would have almost none if she didn't have her energy. Dax and Ivy rest after wrestling and talk about the relationship between body and identity.
ivy #208: snow angelsInspired by a book, Ivy puts on a coat and tries to make snow angels, but in the sand. Weaver discusses why they don't have snow where they live, and Ivy is disappointed that it is very unlikely to snow on the beach. She asks what an angel is and Weaver points out that Neptune resembles some traditional representations of them. Ivy had forgotten about Neptune.
ivy #209: pretty differentIvy comes upon Neptune singing and digging in the mud in the forest, so she joins her and enjoys herself. But then Neptune flies away suddenly and Ivy worries it was her use of her energy to play in the mud that spooked Neptune. She thinks that's unfair because Neptune is really different too and Ivy doesn't run away from HER. She wonders if her life will always be like this.
ivy #210: animalsIvy discovers that the characters in her kids' books tend to go to school if they're human, but not go to school if they're animals. She asks Weaver to help her understand whether that means their group is made up of animals. Weaver explains that they're neither human nor animals . . . sort of.
ivy #211: mad faceWeaver approaches Ivy, apologetic about how he and the others have been ignoring her for a while because they've been preoccupied with troubling news from Adele. Ivy counters that she's been playing grown-up and making a mad face a lot because that's what everyone else was doing, and she recounts for Weaver a list of problems she's been solving or tolerating while no one's been paying attention to her needs. They conclude that they need a nice flight to get their minds off their troubles.
ivy #212: kids growIvy brings a fish to Weaver to prepare and they talk about Alix's absence. Weaver comments that he'll be surprised how much Ivy's grown, and he also says he wants to see her grow up. She doesn't understand why he's philosophizing about this and thinks he's criticizing her current growth.
ivy #213: moatIvy shows Weaver a sandcastle she built after seeing kids do it in a book. Weaver and Ivy discuss what moats might have been for and how to improve the sandcastle with a drawbridge and water.
ivy #214: what we're thinkingAlix returns and Ivy gets spooked, worried that he's going to be angry with her or scared of her. She doesn't know how to act so she retreats and waits at a pond Alix likes, hoping later he'll come to talk to her in private. She gets tired of waiting, but when she comes back, Alix is there and reacts with surprise to an outburst she has attempting to reassure him. They have a lot to talk about.
ivy #215: too scaryAlix and Ivy have a talk by the pond and Alix expresses relief that she's grown up and learned some control, but then he finds out that Ivy thinks he hates her and that she finds his hatred of her as scary as he finds her. He offers her some comfort, reluctantly, while suggesting he's never hated her.
ivy #216: i feel my sleepingIvy comes to bed and is oblivious to a conversation between Adele and Alix about the upcoming dimensional event. She crawls into Alix's bed and he reluctantly lets her sleep next to him. She awakens when she hears the others behaving as if they're worried a wild animal has invaded the cave, and she realizes they believe such a thing because a pile of boxes fell over. She did it in her sleep by accident, and Alix gets upset about it even though a moment ago he was ready to let her protect them from a large animal. Ivy doesn't know how to feel but she goes back to her own bed.
ivy #217: accidentsIvy confronts Alix about how he seems to not like her. He assures her that he's just scared of what she's been doing in her sleep, and Ivy gets really freaked out over the idea that she actually can't stop herself from accidentally moving things in her sleep sometimes. While Alix grudgingly tries to explain the difference between being mad at her and being scared of her powers, she admits that she's scared of her powers too.
ivy #218: deep and darkIvy wakes up from a nap in the sand and decides she should do laundry. She pretends to be Adele while doing it and even tries to put the same faraway look in her eyes. She thinks about how Adele has really deep, dark eyes while Ivy herself does not. Then she realizes she can't keep pretending to be Adele and still be able to hang the wash up, so she gives up.
ivy #219: meet your babyAdele has brought Ivy hair ornaments and new clothes, but she puts her socks in her hair for fun because she doesn't like stuff on her feet. Then Adele presents her with the doll she'd promised her, made from a kit. Adele has customized the doll to look like Ivy, but she doesn't really notice and is excited about reading to the baby and naming her--and taking off her clothes.
ivy #220: you wanted it fastIvy decides her doll wants a pet, so she asks Adele to make her a doll pet. Adele, improvising, tries to make a duck for Ivy's doll out of scraps, but Ivy is disappointed in how comparatively sloppy the duck is. Adele explains she had no pattern or instructions and was trying to work fast. Ivy decides to try to make her own pet and chooses a fish, and is also not satisfied with her own handiwork. She concludes that this is hard, and Adele helps her understand it's okay for the fish and duck to look that way. Ivy accepts the pets and names her doll Wimba.
ivy #221: names for daysIn the forest away from the pool, Ivy and Alix are looking at a children's book that teaches months and days of the week. Ivy doesn't understand the purpose of naming days, and Alix explains the significance, including birthdays. She is confused about why she doesn't know hers. Then mysterious figures fly over them and they're distracted by the sight--it's the faeries who have just come out of the pool and flown into the forest.
ivy #222: too fastIvy and Alix are curious about the flitting presences suddenly appearing in the forest, so Ivy offers to get one for them to examine using her powers. However, when she does so and finds it's a small lady with wings, she simultaneously realizes that she doesn't like holding her because she clearly wants to get away. Alix wants to show the creature to Adele, but the "prisoner" calls out to her fellows and they briefly attack Ivy, injuring her eye mildly. Ivy is annoyed, and agrees to go with Alix to have Adele look at her injury.
ivy #223: bullyAdele determines that Ivy's eye looks a little scratched up but that it's not a dangerous injury. Alix seems freaked out at the prospect that she was hurt, but Ivy doesn't appreciate his fearmongering, so they argue over it, with Ivy blaming herself and feeling like she caused her own attack because she was being a bully to a tiny woman. But then she abruptly realizes Alix wanted to protect her, and she defends him and takes him away to calm down.
ivy #224: the mad thingIvy is in a rush to get herself and Alix away from the pool on Adele's orders, but Alix isn't happy with her. He lashes out demanding that she explain why she said she's going to take care of him and why she made his concerns look ridiculous, but she calms him down by saying she figured out he wants to protect her, and she thanks him. He can't believe she's this mature, but she's tired of being condescended to because she's a kid.
ivy #225: so mature beforeAlix and Ivy are still out in the forest and Ivy has grown irritable. She demands food and wants to go back where Adele and the others are. Alix vetoes the request and tries to pacify her, but she whines. Then they see faeries departing the forest and Alix hopes Adele knows they're coming.
ivy #226: a job for meWeaver comes into the forest to tell Ivy she's needed by the pool. Alix comes along with them as Weaver explains that they need Ivy to hold the wild girl still so Adele can give her cuddles and help her sleep. Ivy is excited when she sees the girl and wants to cuddle her herself, though she is cautioned to keep her hands and feet from flailing.
ivy #227: compassionate childIvy is concerned that the new little girl is going to be bored and sad if she's just stuck on a bed and not sleeping. She asks Adele if she can give the girl food and toys and Adele calls her compassionate. Ivy's glad when Adele agrees to let her interact, and together, they manage to give her water and berries in a bowl. Ivy's optimistic about having a new little friend.
ivy #228: hard to hearIvy is able to bond with the little girl through imitating hand movements, and asks Adele if she'll be able to talk. They discuss how she came from a place where her father tried to hurt her and Ivy wonders if she's not with her own parents for a similar reason. Adele assures her otherwise but she still wonders, and continues her efforts bonding with the little girl.
ivy #229: other new childIvy is up early and ready to have breakfast with the new little girl, but Dax stops her and doesn't want her to get the child up without Adele's agreement. Ivy consents to sit with Dax and wait. In the meantime, she discovers that Dax has another new child in the necklace pouch he's wearing, and she's thrilled to see the tiny faerie boy inside. She hopes she can be in charge of both children.
ivy #230: name of todayAdele takes Ivy away for a private chat and expresses concern that such a young person is about to be asked to take on a huge responsibility. Adele encourages Ivy to take on the role of being "in charge" of the new little girl, but she should tell Adele if she feels overwhelmed. Ivy is dismissive of this and loves the idea of being given responsibilities. Adele and Ivy decide to name the children, and while Adele gives the girl her teacher's name, Tabitha, Ivy decides to name the boy after the day of the week they found him--Thursday--because otherwise those day words are perfectly good words just not getting used.
ivy: #231: the biggest one awakeAdele leaves Ivy in charge and takes Alix off with her. While Dax and Ivy wait for Adele to return with a promised game to keep her occupied, Ivy and Dax chat, and Ivy encourages Dax to go to sleep since he's tired. She wants to be in charge of everyone and take care of all the smaller people (and one big one). She is thrilled to have responsibility.
ivy: #232: burned outAlix returns to the site where Ivy is staying with Dax and the two new children. Dax is asleep and Alix wants to explain how he wants to run things. Ivy's interested in his opinion, but feels like he's angry. Still, his plan to let everyone have some time to themselves as well as run a caretaker role sounds fine to her.
ivy: #233: a distractionIvy and Weaver are attempting to read to little Tabitha, but she's starting to get agitated, and Ivy can tell she wants to pull her bandages off. They decide to distract her with pineapple juice, which she seems to like, but they give some to Thursday too and he takes off flying after a taste. Weaver pursues him, figuring he just got tired of sitting, while Ivy's left alone with Tabitha.
ivy: #234: a fun dayIvy takes Tabitha to the river and props a big rock behind her to lean against. She thinks the child is having a good time even though she's sick. She wants her to be able to play more freely so she tells her she's going to release her hands in a limited fashion, but the first thing the girl does is lash out and Ivy has to stop her. She's disappointed and shocked that the little girl is acting like she wants to hurt her even though she cares about her and is being nice to her.
ivy: #235: tantrumIvy's upset that Tabitha tried to scratch her. She aims to calm her down and tries not to take the attack personally, figuring this is a tantrum. She presents Tabitha with a choice between food and a toy and watches her take and eat the food. Ivy's perplexed by the crying that comes next and concerned that she's making an enemy of the child.
ivy: #236: wrong beforeWeaver asks Ivy for confirmation that she's sure Tabitha can't hurt Thursday even though he's in her reach. Ivy gets a little frustrated trying to explain, and Weaver assures her that he does trust her, but that he's been wrong before even when he was sure he was right, and he doesn't want anyone to die over his bad judgment. In any case they agree that Tabitha does not seem violent toward Thursday at all, and they watch the two babble back and forth like they're talking.
ivy: #237: desk meetingSince Alix wants a meeting and Ivy's main exposure to "meetings" is a meeting she saw in a children's book, she decides she needs a desk. She lifts up a rock and puts a desk on the beach so they can meet. Alix, Ivy, and Weaver go over brief plans for how they'll care for the children, but just when they feel like they've got it figured out, to everyone's surprise, Thursday falls off Tabitha's head.
ivy: #238: good noiseIvy has made some walnut butter (though she keeps annoying Alix by calling it peanut butter since he gave her that term). She feeds some to Tabitha, who has an over-the-top reaction that Ivy interprets as her loving it. Feeding her berries and walnut butter together is sort of like feeding her peanut butter and jelly, which Alix says is a staple in kids' lunches where he's from. Ivy wants more fun food ideas from Alix.
ivy: #239: the next one to comeIvy's been sent away to take a break from being responsible, and she's a little frustrated over it. She sees Adele sitting by the pool, and instead of receiving her happily, Adele tells her she needs to leave because it's dangerous by the pool. Ivy doesn't understand why Adele wouldn't want her there for protection if something scary might come out of the pool, and she elects to stay against Adele's instructions.
ivy: #240: when you goAdele observes Ivy giving Tab a bath. Ivy observes that Tab looks different with her wet hair and her horns more visible. Adele doesn't seem to be paying attention, so when Ivy persists, Adele discusses her letters to Webster and her intention to go to the city again soon. Ivy doesn't like when Adele travels and wants to go with her to make it faster, but Adele says she can't until she's older. Ivy's disappointed and feels like Adele is hiding something.
ivy: #241: to say noIvy doesn't want to go to bed when it's time for Dax to stand guard over Tab as she sleeps. Ivy casually defies Dax's instructions and he gets disturbingly serious with her, and she finds herself responding with obedience even though she doesn't want to. She knows he's right but it's really confusing.
ivy: #242: not watchingAlix helps Ivy come up with an idea to keep Tab happier; she wants some privacy and doesn't want Ivy in her personal space all the time. So he suggests they build a playpen out of big rocks. Tab seems very happy inside the enclosure, but Thursday keeps trying to enter. Alix is nervous but Ivy claims she can keep him safe. Then Alix catches her not watching and thinks she put him in danger, but Ivy knows she was keeping watch even though she wasn't doing it with her eyes. Alix doesn't understand but he's mad anyway. She's sick of it.
ivy: #243: same as meDax tries to help Alix understand what Ivy told him about how her powers work, but Alix still blamed Ivy for not making it clear to him when he was worried for Thursday's safety. Ivy begins to feel incredibly alienated hearing them talk about her and goes off to read a book she likes about a girl who feels different because of her red hair. She wonders if she can take any comfort from it since the girl in the book gets bullies off her back by doing a report about all the other redheaded people in the world, while she thinks she might actually be alone.
ivy: #244: big wild girlIvy watches Tab chasing the birds on the beach and admires/is curious about the way she moves her body and how it's so different from how Ivy herself does. Tab gets scared by a bird when it squawks at her and she runs to Ivy instead of attacking the bird. Ivy feels overwhelmed by how heavy and solid Tab is when she's throwing herself at her for comfort.
ivy: #245: hold backWeaver and Ivy have a chat in the sky about whether Ivy has to hold back while flying with Weaver. She doesn't entirely understand why he thinks anything is wrong because SHE can still do all the things he can't do and him not being able to do them doesn't stop her--and plus he can read better than her and still enjoys doing it with her, right? Weaver still seems unconvinced, but a little reassured.
ivy #246: do it like youIvy's playing with Adele's pebbles and fantasizing about learning to be a prophet when she's older. Adele interrupts her and gently reprimands her for taking the pebbles, but as they sit together and discuss what Ivy would have to actually do to see things like Adele (and Adele admires how Ivy can make patterns of pebbles in the air), they connect somehow in an unprecedented way.
ivy #247: looking at usIvy thinks about her weird experience with Adele. Weaver comes in and tries to put some perspective into the experience for her, and he's really interested in what it means about her future opportunities. Ivy ultimately just needs some time to get used to it, but she wants to be involved in the future.
ivy #248: just see youIvy takes a picture of Adele's newly painted fingernails for Webster. But when Ivy wants to know why Adele can't show her her whole self, Adele reveals that Webster wouldn't think she was pretty, and Ivy is flabbergasted at the idea because Adele is so pretty. She doesn't think Webster deserves Adele's attention.
ivy #249: something niceIvy is ready to experiment with Adele's pebbles again. Adele takes great care to give Ivy an experience where she's in control and comfortable, and they make an easy prediction about the group's next meal.
ivy #250: what a kid isIvy sees Neptune coming out of the forest (as predicted!) and she comes over to eat offered seaweed and nuts. Ivy is excited for Neptune to see that they have Tab and Thursday in the group now, but she doesn't really notice and just wants to eat the food.
ivy #251: sad came insteadIvy surprises Alix at his building site and he reprimands her for scaring him. She tries to get him to return with her, and with Neptune (who is now invisible and watching Alix), but Alix just snaps at her to be quiet and leave him alone. Ivy gets upset and Alix makes it clear he doesn't really care. As she leaves, distraught, Neptune follows her back to the home base.
ivy #252: privacyIvy goes to check on Alix because he hasn't come back to the cave even though it's bedtime, of her own volition. She finds that he's completed the framework of a roof on his structure, and as she asks questions about it, Alix gets irritated. Ivy thinks it's really strange he wouldn't want her help if he had to build a stepstool to reach the roof and he could have just asked her. But his rationale does make sense to her when he explains: he wants to accomplish things on his own. Then he makes it clear that he wants his sole completion of the structure to entitle him to privacy in it. Ivy feels a little hurt that he plans to not share, but has realized that he will always be mean to her so therefore his attitude isn't her fault. She wants him to know he's still welcome in the cave.
ivy #253: tangled upWeaver and Dax bring Tab and Thursday to Ivy so she can extricate the tiny boy from Tab's hair. She does so easily and braids Tab's hair to make it less likely to happen again. Weaver and Dax leave the kids with the gals so they can spend some time together.
ivy #254: in contemptWeaver asks Ivy to let him tell Alix about Adele's dismal prediction for his new house. Ivy begs Weaver to check with Adele before he goes telling anyone anything, because she sees this as knowledge that Adele should decide what to do with. They ask Adele but she says they shouldn't tell Alix--and when she encourages Ivy to think about why she might want his project to fail, she realizes it may actually be a stepping stone to a later building project succeeding.
ivy #255: a wordIvy is giving Tab a bath and decides to ask her opinion of whether they should get out of the water or stay and play. She's been trying to encourage speech by interacting with her verbally, and now Tab gives baby answers to these kinds of questions. But now it seems to Ivy that Tab wants to get out, except that she is upset regardless of whether Ivy puts her in or takes her out. At one point, she shrieks "no!" Ivy is excited that this is a word and is determined to give her what she wants, but she continues to have trouble interpreting Tab's desires. After a lightbulb moment, Ivy thinks maybe Tab is expressing the wish to fly out of the water like Ivy, without being lifted. That makes her sad.
ivy #256: what love doesIvy wakes up in a weird place to a weird noise. She realizes she's in the hotel and there's a tone coming from the phone after Adele has fallen asleep. She wakes Adele up to stop the noise and they discuss Adele's relationship with the man she was on the phone with. Ivy is annoyed that Adele still wants to talk to him even though he won't accept her.
ivy #257: he wantsIvy watches Tab and Thursday playing. Thursday tries to wiggle into Tab's clothes and Ivy tries to figure out why he's doing it and what he wants. He begins using words and Ivy interprets him as wanting a shirt. She puts her doll's shirt on him and he likes it even though she didn't think he would want his wings trapped under clothes. She hopes Adele can make him some clothes that will fit.
ivy #258: waiting for tenIvy and Tab are playing when Alix approaches and says he wants to play their game with them. Ivy's a little surprised he wants to play, but he's being nice, and they make sand balls to help Tab learn to count (and let her have the fun of destroying the sand balls at ten). Alix wants to understand what Tab likes since he usually just gets to watch Thursday, and he comes up with new ideas to modify the game to help her learn to count.
ivy #259: just watchingAdele and Ivy are doing pebble work again, and Ivy is content to let Adele do her own work while she helps instead of pushing for any particular information herself. She's impressed that Adele can handle this kind of information and is glad it's not her business.
ivy #260: how much she can sayIvy enjoys encouraging Tab to talk and thinks about what she learns in association with watching Tab learn. Tab asks for breakfast in garbled baby talk, and Ivy figures it out, but struggles with understanding what she wants when the girl doesn't want to be put down. It turns out she just wants to hold hands because she saw that in a book.
ivy #261: playing with meIvy is painting Tab's nails and can't figure out why Tab keeps seeming to get sand on her wet nails deliberately. She eventually interprets Tab's partial sentences to understand she's comparing the sand to glitter, and likes glitter after seeing it in a book. Ivy and Tab take turns throwing sand at each other and Ivy thinks for once they're playing a game together that they both enjoy.
ivy #262: not calling himIvy and Adele go to the city and Ivy keeps reminding Adele that she promised not to call Webster. When Ivy wakes up and finds out Adele did write him a letter even though she kept her promise not to call him, Ivy is upset because she just doesn't want Adele to communicate with Webster at all. Adele gently explains that Ivy can't decide such things, and she understands but is frustrated.
ivy #263: biggest weirdoIvy breaks up a fight over a toy between Tab and Thursday, and Dax seems curious about why she physically got up and separated Tab instead of doing something with her abilities. Ivy tries to explain it but is very self-conscious about other people thinking about how she does things uniquely. Adele volunteers that she sometimes has to change her behavior to make others feel more comfortable too, and Ivy privately concludes that none of this helps and she feels like a weirdo.
ivy #264: two minutesTab gets annoyed when Thursday steps on a book she's reading, so Ivy has to break up a fight when Tab keeps poking him and knocking him over. She takes Tab away for two minutes at the "time out rock" and waits for her to calm down. Tab seems to take it relatively well even though she is sullen. Ivy hopes they'll be able to really understand each other one day.
ivy #265: like braidingAdele teaches Ivy how to make a loom and create woven mats on it. Ivy enjoys the process, feeling that it's meditative, like braiding, and it takes her a long time even though she can do it faster than anyone else. She is excited to make mats for everyone that they can decorate.
ivy #266: this much sillierIvy keeps having to pull Thursday out of Tab's hair and feels like they're very silly because they keep getting into trouble the same ways, while she as an older child can see these things coming. She takes Tab to the scratching posts to wear her nails down and meets Dax, who wants to feed Thursday some of his carrot. Thursday isn't impressed and they're disappointed.
ivy #267: weird feelingWeaver encounters Ivy playing with Adele's pebbles and asks what she's doing. She says she woke up with a weird feeling that something bad was going to happen with Adele, and was hoping she could use the pebbles to see visions about what's happening to her because she's done the shared visions with Adele before. But it doesn't work for her--all she can do is imitate it--and Weaver tries to comfort her.
ivy #268: nestIvy doesn't have anyone to hang out with so she listens to the radio in the forest and sketches in Adele's diary. She ends up attracting Neptune, and the two of them chill for a while. Then she wonders whatever happened to Neptune's dress, which was shown on Adele's sketch of her. Neptune, to Ivy's surprise, takes her to a distant set of high caves and shows her her "nest" of hoarded belongings. Ivy wonders if she should tell anyone else.
ivy #269: dimensionsAdele asks Ivy to participate in a "big" prediction with her pebbles, and assures her it won't hurt her. Ivy thinks it's very strange since none of the other divinations have hurt either. She is cautioned to not try to follow Adele's train of thought in the predictions as it may be overwhelming and dangerous. She is able to turn her attention away and actually really enjoys just zoning out and not "looking." Adele reveals that she's investigating doing more with the portals that can be made from the pool and establishing a portal network. Ivy thinks that sounds really interesting, except for that Adele might use it to see Webster more.
ivy #270: i couldAdele comes home and the group greets her and asks about her adventures. She is pleased to share her cinnamon rolls. When Alix points out that it's inconvenient that they'd have to get wet traveling there and back, Adele says you can't put yourself in a bag and still get through the opening, but Ivy points out that she could. She's annoyed that people keep talking about things as if her abilities aren't being figured in.
ivy #271: underweightIvy feels almost back to normal and seeks reassurance from Adele. Ivy doesn't want the food Adele offers but she says Ivy should eat it because she's underweight. Alix chimes in to argue with Adele about whether she should be that thin while Ivy remains confused about what size she's supposed to be.
ivy #272: a little castleIvy is building a castle and Alix, wearing his cape, wanders over to compliment it. He expresses the wish to live in a castle like that and they discuss whether their upcoming house could be somewhat like a castle. Alix gives Ivy a backhanded compliment on her ability to have a conversation and she privately thinks she's smarter than he is.
ivy #273: something that stingsIvy greets Tab when she has returned from helping Adele with laundry and she quickly gets frustrated when Tab has a bunch of "why" questions about laundry-related terminology that she can't answer. When Ivy raises her voice Tab resents being yelled at and Ivy gets frustrated at how hard it is to be the bigger kid treating younger ones delicately.
ivy #274: big boy beltIvy takes Thursday to Adele to discuss whether he can get a waist belt. Adele is still modifying it for him and Thursday is disappointed. He goes off with Ivy to play with Tab and realizes as they fly that Ivy is flying without wings, and wants to know how she does that. Ivy is a little perplexed as to whether he just noticed that.
ivy #275: how to helpTab approaches Ivy and reveals she has lost a tooth. Ivy is immediately disgusted and has trouble staying calm, which scares Tab. Knowing Tab just wants help and reassurance, she does her best to suppress her reactions, and tells Tab it's normal and she should go to Adele for guidance.
ivy #276: swallowedIvy is awakened by Tab and Thursday arguing over whether Thursday deserves a necklace too. Tab feels her necklace gift is a special thing reserved for rewarding her for her tooth loss, and Thursday insists he has also lost a tooth and it disappeared because he swallowed it. Ivy is able to force herself to check Thursday's missing tooth evidence so he won't go wake Adele up to judge, and Ivy agrees to make him a necklace too. Tab feels that Thursday is always copying her.
ivy #277: just because they're newAdele approaches Ivy to help her with an errand and she is asked to go through the pool for the first time. She's a little hesitant but doesn't want to reject something weird just because it's new. An order of shed-building equipment is prepared and waiting outside a hardware store for Ivy to take home, and Alix doesn't want to fly back with Ivy and Adele. He'd rather take the portal even though it's also a weird, unexplained phenomenon because it will make him uncomfortable for less time. Ivy thinks about her weird relationship with Alix.
ivy #278: motivateIvy talks to Weaver about her frustrating interaction with Dax, and perceives that he is siding with Dax. But he clarifies that adults try to motivate kids to do things they think are good for them, and if he apologized then he probably understands why it was wrong. Also, Dax is rarely wrong in his interactions with her, so she should be able to let this slide considering his record. She feels calmer, but still is irritated that nobody knows why Dax's thought experiment bothered her so much.
ivy #279: weird dayAlix and Ivy are about to start the shed-building project but he can tell she's not enthusiastic about it and seems to be cooperating reluctantly. He tells her they'll just do it another day and asks her to go spend time doing something else. She can't figure out why she's feeling blah and after thinking a while she talks to Adele, who assures her it's okay to just have a weird day sometimes.
ivy #280: to be and doIvy keeps reading children's books where the kids want to be something when they grow up. She doesn't recognize most of their career choices and doesn't know what she wants out of life, and furthermore she feels like she's supposed to have an opinion on the matter. So she asks Weaver what HE wants to be when he grows up. He claims to already be an adult--she knew that--and suggests having a traditional job isn't necessary for people who live more directly like they do. Ivy is encouraged to ask Alix how he felt about having jobs.
ivy #281: good builderIvy finally starts working with Alix to build a shed and doesn't hate doing it, and looks forward to what Adele said about her future happening--that building a house someday will lead to an opening in her life. Alix compliments Ivy's building abilities and discusses jobs and fulfillment with her.
ivy #282: everything about youIvy and Weaver, while building a cake-looking sandcastle, chat about why Ivy never told Weaver she saw Neptune's nest. He reflects on how watching kids grow up and have experiences you don't get to share as their caretaker is bittersweet, and then realizes he's felt or expressed something like this before. Ivy isn't able to follow why this is significant for him but is willing to distract him at his request, despite that she is frustrated that he thinks she wouldn't understand.
ivy #283: the person who always winsDax brings Tab over to Ivy for her kid-sitting shift, but Tab seems like she's in a bad mood. Dax discloses that Tab hurt herself with her claws and then turned sour about how her ways of being special aren't as cool as Ivy's. Ivy treats Dax to a stoic acceptance of her role as the person who will win every fight and acknowledges that some people are always going to hate that. Privately, Ivy is a little heartbroken at another confirmation that Tab resents her, but figures she ought to get used to it.
ivy #284: to appreciate youWeaver follows up on Dax's request to talk to Ivy about how she's feeling regarding Tab treating her with resentment. Ivy is dismissive of Weaver's desire to talk to her and thinks the issue can't be solved by talking, and doesn't want anyone to make a big deal out of it. But by the end of the conversation, she realizes maybe Weaver does have something worthwhile to say about helping Tab appreciate her instead as she grows up.
ivy #285: philosophical questionIvy's having an immature day and wants Adele to give her ideas to entertain herself and Tab. Adele is busy and resists but Ivy keeps bugging her. Ivy rejects the idea of hide and seek and then essentially asks Adele to explain their purpose in doing the same aimless things every day. Adele is not able to entertain Ivy's philosophical questions right then either and sends them away with another game suggestion and a promise to talk to Ivy later about the big picture.
ivy #286: unsupervisedIvy tags along with Alix into the city and wanders off on her own to look at hair accessories in a store. She talks to a human girl who looks about her age and experiences a longing to have someone around who's an actual peer.
ivy #287: outside worldAdele asks to chat with Ivy after the kids go to bed, which seems weird. Adele is fishing to have Ivy express interest in shopping by herself, but she is hesitant since she isn't comfortable being alone out in the world. Weaver overhears and seems confused why Adele is putting the idea in Ivy's head considering she was just telling him not to do it. Ivy is surprised to hear she was expected to want to sneak out and wonders if she is supposed to want to.
ivy #288: installationAlix, Adele, and Ivy go to a new place with a portal opening that's in a rather deep lake. The three use their own special skills to purchase, transport, and install a tube held down over the portal opening by a heavy block, accessible by ladder. Ivy is impressed with the structure but also thinks it probably wouldn't be necessary for her to use deep portals, and marvels at how difficult other people's lives must be that they have to be able to invent things like this to do things that are easy for her.
ivy #289: sit downIvy, Weaver, Dax, and Alix are hanging out discussing Adele's absence. Ivy and Weaver take it in stride and trust Adele is fine, but Alix thinks they're too calm and they must know something they're hiding from him. Weaver's attempt to de-escalate makes Alix angry and Ivy interprets some of his movements as threatening Weaver. She stands up to Alix and ends up shoving him to make him sit down. But then Ivy apologizes and asks Alix to see their perspective and apologize too. He does.
ivy #290: the one who's realIvy greets Adele upon her return and gets the kids for lunch. She hears Alix complaining that Ivy is tall and she wonders if there's something actually wrong with her height or if he's just being a jerk. Then when she sits in the air, Tab, then Alix, comments on her sitting that way. Alix thinks she should be bobbing up and down because that's what he's seen in movies. She decides to turn it around on him and ask why people are writing stories about stuff they haven't seen. She feels a little more comfortable about being asked questions as they make vague plans to go see a movie that contains flying together.
ivy #291: your own choiceIvy is relieved when Weaver interrupts her getting grilled with questions from Tab and Thursday that she can't answer, offering to answer questions himself. He gives his own summary of how sex works and fields some more questions. Ivy is surprised at herself that she never wondered about these things, and also can't imagine that one day she might want to have sex for its own sake. When the other kids imply that she'll HAVE to do it when she's grown up, Weaver assures her that that's not true and it's her choice, and she may feel differently when she's older, but it's okay if she doesn't.
ivy #292: i have questionsAlix follows up on his suggestion to take Ivy out to see a Superman movie. They watch the movie on VHS at Alix's friend Cherie's house. Ivy has a ton of questions--some of which are about the superhero and flying aspects of the character, but some of which are just scattered questions about what's happening in the movie--and Alix doesn't want her to ask them in front of his friend. When they leave she dumps all her questions all over Alix and has even more thoughts she's pondering.
ivy #293: the deciderAdele decides to set up a test mission for Ivy and while they're figuring out that she can help another young girl rescue her cat, Ivy is surprised to find Adele giving her very little guidance on how to approach the task. She isn't used to the idea that she can decide how something should be done, and isn't entirely comfortable with the idea, but she's eager to move forward when she learns the cat that needs rescue is thirsty and needs help soon.
ivy #294: bad planningIvy goes on her first practice mission and finds herself feeling a little awkward when she's face to face with the people whose cat she will rescue. She doesn't quite know how to tell them where the cat is and feels intimidated by the owner's worry that it isn't the right cat. So she brings the cat back for them to solve the problem and tries to get the owners to let her stay around and play with the cat. She doesn't feel like they really want her there even though they're being nice since she did them a favor. Ivy feels out of her element.
ivy #295: a bad thing to beIvy thinks deeply about the experience of doing a favor for others without connecting with them personally, and wonders whether it's bad that she's lonely and what she might have to do to find friends who would accept her differences. She decides against prolonging the outing and goes home, and discusses with Adele whether she should share more of herself in future missions. It is apparently up to her.
ivy #296: didn't stop herTab asks why Ivy can't take her on a fun mission and Ivy doesn't really have a good reason except that Adele asked her to do it and they have to avoid certain contact with humans. Tab dares Ivy to stop her and goes through the pool. Ivy, belatedly, follows her and takes her back. They come back to Adele standing there.
ivy #297: disappointedAdele is "disappointed" in Ivy's judgment and very firmly tells both girls that they must never use the pools without her express permission again, but Ivy feels like Adele's expectation that she will control Tab's behavior isn't very fair and also her suggestion that they could get stranded if they use the pool willy-nilly is unreasonable since Adele would be able to find them. Nevertheless, Ivy plans to listen to Adele. She's just not very happy about how she was scolded.
ivy #298: what's good for meIvy and Weaver are wrestling and Alix comes over to bug them about productivity. Weaver aggressively defends Ivy about the need for play, and Ivy's surprised Weaver feels so strongly about this. She pitches in in her own defense about how they've already DONE what needs to be done and Alix shouldn't be complaining--and maybe HE should play sometimes too. He backs off, but leaves Ivy and Weaver annoyed.
ivy #299: not my businessThe remaining group members who haven't seen Adele's hair--Dax and Tab--weigh in, and Ivy wonders if there was a reason Adele cut her hair besides spontaneously wanting a change. She suspects there's something else going on but doesn't want to pry. She offers to help Adele even out her hair since it looks a bit choppy, and Adele accepts.
ivy #300: most people's natureIvy goes on another practice mission and isn't able to help the person she's assigned to. Adele encourages her to think of more creative solutions where the person she's helping can help her as well, but she struggles to think of ways she can accomplish this and wonders if she's just not going to be able to accomplish missions when they do start to get more important.
ivy #301: why can't i?Ivy reluctantly takes her problems to Alix hoping for some insight into how to help humans solve problems without being suspicious. He agrees with Weaver and Dax that helping others usually involves reciprocation, and suggests she treat her sessions with Adele as opportunities to find people who can help her as much as she can help them. Which should be fair even if she's not figuring it out on her own, because after all, Adele does it that way herself.
ivy #302: seasickAdele encourages Ivy to introduce her own choices into the matrix of pebbles so she can follow an idea to its logical conclusions, but Ivy is overwhelmed and suffocated under a maelstrom of feelings she doesn't understand. On top of simply not being able to follow the myriad possibilities, Ivy experiences a crushing dread that makes her absolutely not want to be involved in the prediction. She becomes nauseated and Adele isn't able to comfort her very well, so at her request, Adele leaves her alone to recover.
ivy #303: something about the truthIvy goes on another mission, this time to help a woman move some furniture. She ends up deciding to tell the woman that she can move things without touching them, just to make the process easier, and the woman doesn't get upset and respectfully lets her do her thing. She even gives Ivy a drink and a hug afterwards. Ivy isn't a huge fan of having her ability called "magic" but she can't put her finger on why. She wonders if she was supposed to be honest like this or if it was the easy way out.
ivy #304: personal stuffIvy finds Adele writing "personal stuff" and after a little prying finds out Adele has broken up with Webster but she doesn't want to talk about it. Ivy is instantly sad and desperate to offer comfort she believes Adele should have wanted and needed, but Adele keeps emphasizing that talking it out--especially with a child--is not what she believes will help her. She asks Ivy not to talk about her breakup with the others and assures Ivy that she will bring other feelings to her anytime she thinks Ivy's listening ear will be helpful, but she wants Ivy to respect the will of the people she wants to help. She processes this and agrees.
ivy #305: that's not meIvy and Tab are doing laundry when Tab accuses Ivy of flying during the chore just to show off. Ivy is exasperated that Tab thinks her natural way of interacting with the world is calculated to inspire her jealousy, and instead of getting mad she gets sad and briefly cries in front of Tab. She tries to help Tab understand that she needs her energy to make up for her body's disadvantages. Tab doesn't fully understand but wants to teach Ivy to run.
