YASMIN

After Ivy approaches her during gym class and presents an opportunity to take her to the tryouts, Yasmin rolls with Ivy's unconventional suggestion very well after a private flying test in the bathroom, and she invites her to pick her up at her house after her father leaves for work on Saturday. She's able to provide a map to help Ivy figure out how to get her to this tryout at a school in another city. But she extends unexpected kindness to Ivy--seemingly reluctantly--when she finds out she was planning to sleep outside and lets her secretly stay over in her room as long as she hides from Yasmin's dad. It's Ivy's first sleepover, and though she gets to spend some precious time with another girl her age, Yasmin's chosen topics of conversation are generally about her powers or where she comes from. Ivy is able to get Yasmin to the tryouts the next day, and she does very well, but then she remains worried about whether her dad will fork over the cash to pay for the camp if she does get an invitation. Ivy is frustrated that she solved one of Yasmin's problems but didn't necessarily make a huge difference for her.

Yasmin has divorced parents and an older brother who's away at college on a volleyball scholarship. She lives with her father in a house in a small town, and her father works two jobs so they don't spend much time together. Yasmin is relatively self sufficient. She is excellent at volleyball and has played recreationally for years, mostly through connections her brother made that she tagged along to. She also loves music and hanging out with her friends. She is Afro-Latina and is bilingual, speaking Spanish and English (Spanish being her father's native language, which she speaks with him at home).
