It's interesting, and good to keep in mind, that even Adele can utterly misread people's intentions at times!
Ivy's discomfort is very true to life. Certainly, young children also feel deep frustration at having their needs go unfulfilled and their desires misinterpreted; but as you mature, there can be almost an element of psychological horror to acquiring a nuanced theory of mind. Even the people who've known you your entire life and shaped your experience of the world still have imperfect insight into the workings of your mind, and over time will only become less equipped to grasp your full complexity and more likely to misunderstand you to a profound degree.
Fortunately, language helps to bridge the gap, and Ivy and the other kids are being raised by some excellent communicators, clairvoyant or not. |
