This is really insightful.
Alix is learning that other "people" are intelligent - "to choose between". People are mostly bound by laws of physics, but also make free choices. Free choices are supernatural.
There was an insightful Sunday School song from my childhood with the refrain, "Our God is not a Jack-in-the-box." A modern version might use "vending machine" instead.
Alix offered a "prayer" (request) to his companions. They heard his prayer, and the answer was "not now". "Pray" is an old fashioned word meaning to "entreat", and only in modern times has it come to be used only of entreating deities.
