Every parent (unless they are vegetarian) should have their children participate in the killing and preparation of an animal for food. I recommend a chicken. It is cute, but different enough from mammals to not be as disturbing.
I find it disturbing when kids think meat is something manufactured for the grocery store - like gummi bears. After killing their own dinner, they are properly horrified by factory farms.
