Ah, been there. Both as the one trying to offer comfort and the one not ready to accept it.
Grief or depression can be literally blinding, even with someone right beside you trying to bring you out of it.
Again, I'm amazed at your ability to make these characters believable. Very well done.

Uh-oh, Fred's gotta be careful. If he continues down that path, trying to drink away his sorrows, things will only get far worse for him... no, *both* of them. Alcohol and self-pity don't mix!

When my maternal Grandfather died (of an allergic reaction to penicillin), my Mom woke up in the middle of the night, and said, "Daddy's dead!". The phone call came in the morning.
