As for my bird hobby, I have them because nonhuman speech fascinates me. Many birds can talk, and though some of it is imitation, I'm interested in what evolutionary function that has for them and whether they ever actually use it to communicate with humans--or if it's just our wishful thinking that they are intentionally responding to us. If I could observe dolphins and whales the same way I can birds, I would do it, but that's obviously not practical.

My house isn't in the middle of nowhere. I'm glad you don't have a concept of where it is, though, because I'd rather not get audited as to whether my permits for exotic animals are valid, and I'm guessing you disapprove of me having them.
